Good User Experience for All Device Platforms and Application Types
End users experience peak data rates up to 2.4 Mbps with 1xEV-DO devices.
End users are able to have a wireline-equivalent experience using their laptops
with a full suite of applications. PDAs can use richer content, and smartphones
are accommodated at the appropriate data rate.
Dual-mode Devices
End users can select devices that offer both 1X voice and 1xEV-DO high-speed
data services. These dual-mode devices can hand off to 1X packet data services
if users move out of 1xEV-DO coverage and also monitor voice calls when in
1xEV-DO data sessions.
Attractive Monthly Service Prices
End users can take advantage of new service pricing plans, due to 1xEV-DO's
lower cost per bit. Based on the CDMA2000 network architecture, the system
has the ability to track usage by volume (bytes, packets), as well as the
traditional tracking of usage by time.
Always-on Service
1xEV-DO provides an "always-on" user experience. Once a device is
powered on, the end user only logs in once, and the subsequent sessions can
be started without having to log in again. When a user comes out of dormancy,
the connection time is less than 0.5 second. This is an important advantage
of the service offering, since it allows the user's natural state to be dormancy,
where the device does not utilize any radio resources and has minimal power
consumption.
Ubiquitous Coverage and Service Availability in All Environments
1xEV-DO is the only megabit Internet service available today that operates
in all environments. End users enjoy the high data rates in mobile, portable,
and fixed environments. Therefore, end users can use 1xEV-DO's high-speed
data services in the same manner as they use mobile voice services today.
1xEV-DO takes the desktop experience and extends it to all wireless environments.
The 1xEV-DO system provides significant and fundamental competitive advantages
for operators:
Spectral Efficiency
1xEV-DO uses spectrum very efficiently and provides the highest capacity (aggregate
peak capacity of 7.4 Mbps in a 3-cell sector) with a 1.25 MHz frequency carrier.
This enables the best and most economical use of an operator's spectrum resources.
High Service Quality
By separating voice and packet data services on different frequency carriers,
voice quality is maintained at its highest level and packet data services
have higher peak data rates (2.4 Mbps).
Increased Revenue Opportunity
The higher capacity of the 1xEV-DO system accommodates a large number of users,
increasing the revenue potential for operators. The megabit data rates attract
high-value customers desiring to purchase data services along with their voice
service. 1xEV-DO targets all market segments, ranging from mobile professionals
to consumers.
Higher Profit Margins
Because 1xEV-DO has higher capacity while essentially using the same amount
of network resources, it delivers the lowest cost per bit for packet data.
Leverage from Existing Capital Investments
1xEV-DO can be highly integrated into CDMA2000 and cdmaOne systems, leveraging
operators' existing capital investments. 1xEV-DO can be highly integrated
into existing base stations, and can use the same PDSN, BSC, cell sites, towers,
antennas, and network plans.
Proven, Low-risk Technology
1xEV-DO has been extensively tested in the field
and provides a proven and low-risk solution for device and infrastructure
manufacturers.
High-volume CDMA2000 Cost Curves
1xEV-DO uses the same RF components as used
in CDMA2000 and cdmaOne systems and devices. These RF components have high-volume
cost curves, and enable manufacturers to benefit from cost savings associated
with mainstream components.
Applications and Services
From basic communications to streaming video entertainment and m-commerce transactions,
1xEV-DO enables a wireless lifestyle that allows users the freedom and flexibility
to have their wireless world at their fingertips. Operators can offer existing
applications at lower costs, introduce data intensive applications, and look
forward to a new breed of wireless applications which follow wireline Internet
trends with the addition of mobility and position location customizations. The
wide variety of applications include:
Communications
E-mails with large attachments
Multimedia messaging
