Telefônica Subscribers in Rio de
Janeiro Experience High-Speed Data Applications Over a CDMA2000
1X Network
COSTA MESA, Calif., April 17, 2002 - Congratulating
Telefônica Celular for the company's commercial roll
out of CDMA2000 1X wireless services, Perry LaForge, executive
director of the CDMA Development Group (CDG) (www.cdg.org),
today commented, "With Telefônica Celular's CDMA2000
network, consumers in Rio de Janeiro will be able to do more
with wireless communications at much faster data speeds. Subscribers
on Telefônica's network will now have access to 3G applications
delivered at data speeds up to 144 kbps. The CDG applauds
Telefônica for their leadership in delivering advanced
wireless solutions to the area."
Telefônica Celular, which services
more than 23 percent of the Brazilian market, will initially
offer CDMA2000 1X services in Rio de Janeiro where the operator
currently has market share of more than 63 percent. Telefônica
will also offer its 1X services to 20 areas in the southern
region of the city, as well as the downtown area and international
and domestic airports.
Telefônica currently provides cdmaOne services
to more than 4.7 million subscribers in Brazil's key markets
including Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo, Bahia, Sergipe and
Rio Grande do Sol.
Telefônica is the second operator to launch next-generation
services based on CDMA2000 1X technology in Brazil. Telesp
Celular introduced its CDMA2000 1X services in Sao Paulo in
December 2001. Six other operators in Latin America will be
deploying CDMA2000 this year. These operators are SmartCom
PCS in Chile; Centennial in Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic;
Telecel and Movilnet in Venezuela; and Pegaso in Mexico.
Today there are 12 commercial CDMA2000 networks delivering
3G services to more than 6 million subscribers in Asia, Europe,
and North and South America.
