cdmaOne* Expands Presence in Australian Wireless Market

Fastest Growing Wireless Technology Continues to Capture Major Growth Markets Globally

COSTA MESA, Calif. Nov 3, 1998 -- The CDMA Development Group (CDG) today announced that cdmaOne, the world's fastest growing wireless technology, has now expanded its footprint in the Australian wireless market. Telstra, Australia's principal telecommunications company, has formally announced that it has adopted cdmaOne and will deploy the technology nationally, potentially reaching three million customers.

"This represents another significant win for cdmaOne. We are very pleased that Telstra has selected CDMA, particularly since they conducted such an exhaustive study of cdmaOne and the other technologies," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "Australia will have both CDMA WLL and cellular systems and will be a key country in the establishment of a worldwide cdmaOne network, facilitating roaming throughout the Asia Pacific region."

In a press release dated October 13, Telstra announced that it plans to commercially launch cdmaOne systems in mid 1999 in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane. The initial launch will be rapidly followed by further rollout into regional locations covered by the existing analog network.

In that same release, Mr. Lindsay Yelland, Telstra's Group Managing Director, Products and Marketing, stated, "Telstra’s decision to choose CDMA followed an extensive evaluation process and rigorous examination of the various 800 MHz mobile technologies against a range of criteria for its suitability as a replacement for the analogue network. CDMA best meets the needs of our customers as well as our strict technical service requirements."
