NTELOS Launches Nationwide High Speed Mobile Broadband Service Using The EV-DO Rev A Technology
WAYNESBORO, VA – April 3, 2008 – NTELOS, a leading provider of wireless voice and data services in Virginia and West Virginia, announces the launch of its nationwide Mobile Broadband service, a high-speed wireless data service based on Alcatel-Lucent's Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) Rev A technology. Mobile Broadband gives nTelos' customers wireless access from their laptop, PDA/Smartphone, or cell phone to the Internet at speeds comparable to wired broadband connections such as cable modem or DSL.
According to nTelos wireless President Carl Rosberg, the launch of nTelos Mobile Broadband is continuing evidence of the brand's commitment to delivering the best value in wireless – whether it's data or voice services. "Staying competitive in today's market means recognizing and delivering the products, tools and resources that are important to the marketplace," said Rosberg. "Our Mobile Broadband service will give our customers high-speed wireless service that they don't have today. Soon, they will be able to enjoy the freedom and mobility to stay connected with the convenience and reliability of our nationwide service."
This initial launch of EV-DO includes the Huntington/Ashland markets in West Virginia and, importantly, the operational status for one of two new switches related to the company's network-wide EV-DO upgrade project. Overall, the upgrade process is on schedule with the Charlottesville, Staunton and Waynesboro, Virginia markets projected to be operational early in the second quarter of 2008.
Also, the company has committed to accelerate upgrade activities originally scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2009 into the fourth quarter of 2008. This acceleration will satisfy the 98% completion target defined by the company's resale agreement with Sprint and will increase incremental capital expenditures for the EV-DO upgrade in 2008 by approximately $3 million, to about $38 million for the year. Total incremental capital expenditures for the EV-DO upgrade remain estimated at approximately $65 million, as previously disclosed.

Verizon Wireless Unveils Traffic Avoidance And Other New Features On Popular VZ Navigator Service
Verizon Wireless Unveils Traffic Avoidance And Other New Features On Popular VZ Navigator Service
LAS VEGAS and BASKING RIDGE, NJ — April 1, 2008 — From CTIA WIRELESS 2008, Verizon Wireless, the owner and operator of the nation’s most reliable wireless voice and data network, and Networks In Motion (NIM), the award-winning wireless navigation and hyper-local search company, announced today that the newest version of VZ Navigator(SM) will be available in April on select consumer phones and Windows Mobile devices. With the new VZ Navigator (Version 4), customers in 75 cities from coast to coast will be able to access traffic incidents, traffic updates and find detours around traffic congestion and accidents; more cities are expected to be added in the coming year. In addition, VZ Navigator will offer 3D perspective view, a movie and events finder, weather reports and forecasts, and gas prices at nearby gas stations.
Powered by Networks In Motion, Verizon Wireless’ VZ Navigator service is a location-based service (LBS) application that utilizes GPS technology and real-time information feeds. When the new version launches in April, customers in 75 cities will be able to access the new traffic integration feature. In these markets, routes will be calculated using both historical and real-time reported traffic information – the historical information will allow customers to see on average whether the traffic is impacted by traffic lights, heavy traffic or school zones. VZ Navigator’s historical data covers over 750,000 miles of roads in 48 states across the nation, making travel time estimates more accurate. The incident and flow information will tell customers how traffic is flowing, and will include details about reported accidents, disabled vehicles and congestion. NIM’s Traffic Tracking Center continually monitors conditions along the customers’ routes, sending proactive alerts to dri vers about conditions ahead of them on their chosen routes. Detour options allow for comparison of ETA and conditions, before selecting a new route. Traffic information is powered by NAVTEQ Traffic.
Lee Daniels, vice president of consumer product development for Verizon Wireless, said, “Real-time reported traffic information and more allows our customers to truly transform their wireless phones into powerful navigation systems, at a fraction of the cost of other GPS devices. When Networks In Motion adds additional functionality to our VZ Navigator service, it enhances our customers’ overall wireless experiences.”
Other new features customers can expect to see on VZ Navigator (Version 4) include:
• Local Movies and Events – Customers can now search for show times, critics’ ratings and other details for movies, concerts, plays, sporting events and other social events based on the physical location of their phones.
• 3D Perspective View – Enhances navigation by displaying maps from angles customers would see through car windshields, making it easier to visualize turn-by-turn directions.
• Gas Finder – Provides customers with information on the location of gas stations close to their physical location and even provides gas prices at many gas stations in the area. Once a customer selects a station, VZ Navigator can also provide turn-by-turn directions to the selected gas station.
• Weather – Provides current weather conditions and forecasts based on the physical location of their phones without manually inputting an address.
Pricing
The newest version of VZ Navigator (Version 4) will be available next month for $9.99 for unlimited monthly access or $2.99 for one-day use on select Get It Now®-enabled phones in the Get Going section under Travel & Guides or Featured Apps. In addition, VZ Navigator (Version 4) will also be available on select Windows Mobile devices. Airtime or megabyte charges and specific terms of use apply when browsing, downloading and using the application. Traffic integration is only available in certain areas. Verizon Wireless customers who currently have a subscription to VZ Navigator can get a free upgrade by simply selecting Options from the main screen of VZ Navigator then selecting Check for Updates. Accuris Networks Launches AccuROAM Cellular To WiFi Hotspot Roaming Solution
Accuris Networks Launches AccuROAM Cellular To WiFi Hotspot Roaming Solution
DUBLIN, Ireland – April 2nd , 2008 – Accuris Networks, an innovator in Fixed Mobile Convergence today announced the launch of its AccuROAM platform specifically designed for CDMA to WiFi Hotspot roaming. Accuris Network’s solution is based on proven roaming principles, that is AccuROAM preserves the user cellular experience including voice, data, SMS and all supplementary services while using a WiFi hotspot when roaming. This is what differentiates the Accuris Networks’ solution from other WiFi Hotspot roaming solutions available today.
Historically Accuris has provided gateway solutions to cellular operators to support inter-working between CDMA and GSM cellular networks. The emergence of alternative technologies, such as WiFi and WiMAX provide new opportunities for CDMA operators and for Accuris Network’s proven inter-working solutions. The latest release of the Accuris Network’s AccuROAM application server now provides support for WLAN (SIP Based) inter-working with existing CDMA networks.
The AccuROAM Cellular to WiFi Hotspot roaming solution enables subscribers to use preferred International WiFi Hotspots to make VoIP calls from their mobile phones. The benefit to the subscriber is cheaper roaming calls, while the benefit to the home operator is greater profit margin on the roaming call as there is no revenue leaked to a foreign cellular network. The end result is that Net Profit on roaming revenue can be increased by 30%.
According to Aidan Dillon, CEO at Accuris Networks “Roaming revenue contributes significantly to a mobile operator’s bottom line however, with recent EU legislation and competitive offers from VoIP providers, mobile operators’ roaming revenue is seriously threatened. At Accuris Networks our aim is to assist mobile operators in maintaining their position in the roaming value chain while at the same time increasing the level of profitability generated from roaming traffic.”
Dillon went on to say “we have already secured interest from mobile operators and the key areas of our product that appeals to them are:
• It enables Mobile Operators to compete with VoIP providers on price.
• Using AccuROAM Mobile Operators can offer their subscribers a superior roaming service and seamless customer experience when compared to VoIP providers.
• It’s a mobile phone based solution as opposed to a laptop one, so subscribers use the same phone number when making or receiving calls in a WiFi hotspot.
• AccuROAM supports both incoming and outgoing calls to WiFi connected phones, unlike some VoIP solutions that require the subscriber to rely on incoming calls to be handled by CDMA.
• AccuROAM is based on proven roaming principles and as such Accuris offers managed roaming where operators steer their subscribers to preferred partner WiFi hotspots.
• Lastly and most importantly AccuROAM enables Mobile Operators to increase the level of profitability on roaming calls.

 Alcatel-Lucent Introduces CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision B Capabilities At CTIA
Alcatel-Lucent Introduces CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision B Capabilities At CTIA
CTIA Wireless, Las Vegas, April 1, 2008 - Alcatel-Lucent today announced its plans to support CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision B (EVDO Rev B) capabilities for third-generation (3G) CDMA networks. EVDO Rev B enables mobile operators to improve capacity, throughput and latency on their existing EVDO networks, resulting in an improved quality of experience for its data subscribers.
The Alcatel-Lucent EVDO Rev B solution is a software upgrade to existing EVDO base stations and allows EVDO radio carriers to be deployed in increments of 2.5 or 3.75 megahertz (MHz), as opposed to the 1.25 MHz increments supported today. By deploying wider carriers, mobile operators could see a two- or three-fold improvement in the forward link peak data rates (6.2 Mbps for 2.5 MHz and 9.1 Mbps for 3.75 MHz). Peak data rates for the Reverse Link are improved proportionally (3.6 Mbps for 2.5 MHz and 5.4 Mbps for 3.75 MHz).
Alcatel-Lucent’s implementation results in higher individual user throughputs across the entire footprint of the cell, resulting in the perception by the end-user of a more uniform data rate as they move through different areas of coverage. This will be most evident under the more challenging radio frequency (RF) conditions - such as the extreme limits of cell coverage - where users may now get a threefold improvement in throughputs. Commercial availability of Alcatel-Lucent’s EVDO Rev B solution is anticipated in the 2009 timeframe.
“EVDO Rev. B is the next natural step in the evolution of CDMA networks, and provides an easy and seamless way for operators to deliver more sophisticated services at even higher speeds on their existing wireless broadband networks,” said Ed Chao, vice president for CDMA/EV-DO Product Management at Alcatel-Lucent. “Alcatel-Lucent is committed to ensuring that our operator customers have access to the latest innovations to leverage their CDMA investments far into the future. Our Rev. B solution will provide further substantial improvements to our customers’ existing EVDO networks.”
Operators will find that deploying EVDO Rev B offers greater operational efficiencies than deploying the equivalent number of single EVDO Rev A carriers. They can balance loads between carriers better as EVDO Rev B ensures a distribution of loads and higher overall throughputs as loads increase. Additionally, EVDO Rev B can carry more users at higher speeds than individual Rev A carriers.
The new EVDO Rev B solution is a simple software upgrade into any of the Alcatel-Lucent 1xEVDO Rev A capable Base Stations (formerly known as the CDMA Modular Cell base stations). EVDO Rev B-equipped Base Stations will retain backwards compatibility and continue to support 1xEVDO Rev A and Rev 0 mobile devices that are already deployed.

Alcatel-Lucent Unveils 3G CDMA/EV-DO Distributed Base Station That Offers Greater Deployment Flexibility While Lowering Power Requirements
Alcatel-Lucent Unveils 3G CDMA/EV-DO Distributed Base Station That Offers Greater Deployment Flexibility While Lowering Power Requirements
CTIA Wireless, Las Vegas, April 1, 2008 – Alcatel-Lucent today announced the expansion of its CDMA/EV-DO portfolio with a new distributed base station that gives mobile operators greater flexibility for third-generation (3G) network deployments while lowering power consumption and reducing operating expenses. The Alcatel-Lucent 9234 Base Station d2U Distributed is designed to support CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO Revision A (Rev. A) services, enabling both high-quality voice and high-speed data services such as streaming video, Web browsing, voice over IP (VoIP) and more.
This “zero footprint” distributed base station seamlessly integrates into existing networks and can be deployed in a wide array of physical locations such as utility poles, the sides of the buildings and tower tops, without taking up any floor space at an existing site, or with minimal space at a new site, thus minimizing real estate costs, a key expense for operators. The platform effectively separates baseband and radio frequency components into a baseband unit and remote radio heads (RRH) allowing a wide variety of configurations, and enabling different elements of the base station to be separated by miles. This provides exceptional flexibility for operators facing physical site constraints and site acquisition challenges, allowing them to provide seamless coverage to their subscribers.
“The concept of remote radio heads is not new, and W-CDMA operators have been introducing compact baseband units for some time,” notes Peter Jarich, Research Director with Current Analysis. “Carrying this combination forward to the CDMA market, however, promises operators the zero-footprint capabilities necessary for growing their networks – in terms of capacity and coverage – cost effectively.”
“The introduction of this new platform highlights our continuing focus on bringing the latest innovations to market to help mobile operators maintain their competitive edge,” said Mike Iandolo, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s CDMA/EV-DO activities. “This new distributed base station gives our customers exceptional flexibility to deal with the most challenging deployment scenarios, enabling them to quickly and easily close coverage gaps to ensure that their subscribers enjoy the same high-quality experience no matter where they are.”
Alcatel-Lucent's RRH portfolio complies with the strictest environmental standards. As all of the RRH products are fanless, they are silent, and combined with a 50 percent improvement in power saving over earlier generation products they bring a significant reduction in energy consumption. These lower power requirements enable this new base station to operate on alternative energy sources such as solar or wind power, a considerable advantage in remote locations where access to power can be limited. Finally, this new platform can substantially reduce the number of base stations needed to cover a given area, further reducing the overall environmental impact of the network.
Alcatel-Lucent is the first company to adapt the Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) specification to CDMA. It allows the company to better support customers by leveraging development across multiple wireless technologies (CDMA and W-CDMA), and support a smooth, and consistent evolution path to 4G. The distributed portfolio reinforces Alcatel-Lucent’s customers’ investment protection with a hardware platform common across both the CDMA/EV-DO and W-CDMA/HSPA portfolios, and is ready to support future technology upgrades including LTE and UMB.
As a global leader in the development and deployment of third-generation (3G) networks, Alcatel-Lucent has deployed commercial 3G (UMTS/HSPA and CDMA2000) systems for more than 70 operators worldwide.
Alcatel-Lucent and Climate Change
Alcatel-Lucent is committed to eco-sustainability with a particular focus on climate change. This is a key component of the company’s business strategy. The company has developed corporate strategies and practices to reduce the environmental impact of its products and operations. It leverages its research and innovation teams to develop and implement groundbreaking, environmentally friendly and energy-efficient technologies. As a leading global telecommunications player, Alcatel-Lucent engages actively with its key stakeholders including customers and suppliers to address eco-sustainability and climate change issues throughout the entire supply chain. Alcatel-Lucent has signed the UN Global Compact "Caring for Climate" initiative and is listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. The company has been awarded the 2008 SAM Silver Sustainability Recognition.

Raco Alarm Systems Integrates Kyocera CDMA Module For AlarmAgent.com
Raco Alarm Systems Integrates Kyocera CDMA Module For AlarmAgent.com
Las Vegas, NV - (April 1, 2008) - Kyocera Wireless Corp., a leading global manufacturer of wireless handsets and devices, and RACO Manufacturing and Engineering, Inc., a leading provider of remote monitoring, reporting and control devices, today announced that RACO's AlarmAgent.com® now integrates the award-winning Kyocera 200 Module to enable anytime, anywhere communications over CDMA2000 1xRTT wireless networks. AlarmAgent.com is a sophisticated CDMA-based, Web-enabled remote monitoring and alarm reporting solution designed to monitor and manage unattended equipment for municipalities, utilities and manufacturers. It has been approved for use with the largest M2M-focused CDMA service provider in North America.
"We were on a tight timeline to meet the requirements of the wireless industry's evolution to digital technology, and we needed a technology partner with a field-proven solution and strong carrier relationships who could also provide integration and engineering support," said Sam Siggins, vice president, engineering, RACO. "CDMA modules from Kyocera Wireless were a perfect fit and helped us achieve our goals. AlarmAgent.com remains a powerful and cost-effective tool that puts total system access at our customers' fingertips."
AlarmAgent.com, enabled by the Kyocera 200 Module, is a full-featured, Web-based alarm detection and reporting system that provides always-on monitoring of unattended equipment. Designed for use at wastewater treatment facilities, manufacturing plants and utilities, AlarmAgent.com uses wireless and Web-enabled Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) to continuously monitor preconfigured data from equipment in the field. When an alarm condition is detected, a technician or manager immediately receives notification via cell phone, email, phone, SMS, and/or pager and is able to acknowledge and respond in real time. A user-friendly Web-based interface allows technicians to view and download detailed equipment performance reports and determine a course of action immediately, saving equipment downtime and often preventing the need for extensive repairs. Data and reports can be accessed on-demand from any Internet-connected PC or other Web-enabled device.
"The ability to cost effectively manage remote equipment is vitally important and Kyocera's wireless modules empower real-time communication of key data," said Dean Fledderjohn, general manager of the M2M product line at Kyocera Wireless Corp. "We provide our customers with a powerful, durable wireless tool that's affordable and extremely complementary to existing landline solutions."

Las Vegas, NV - (April 1, 2008) - Kyocera Wireless Corp., a leading global manufacturer of wireless handsets and devices, and CalAmp Corp., a leading provider of wireless products, services and solutions, today announced that CalAmp's LMU-4100 Location Messaging Unit now integrates the award-winning Kyocera 200 Module for any time, anywhere communications over CDMA2000 1xRTT networks. The Kyocera-powered LMU-4100 delivers an affordable Global Positioning Satellite (GPS)-based location monitoring device that lowers the cost of delivering, supporting and growing fleet-management solutions. The integrated product has been approved for use with the largest CDMA machine-to-machine (M2M) carrier in North America.
The rugged CalAmp LMU-4100 is a powerful asset-tracking product designed for the demanding local fleet management market. Embedded with an onboard alert engine, it is designed to monitor and react to a series of configurable rules and vehicle conditions that provide remote monitoring of vehicle location and conditions. Using the Kyocera Module allows the LMU-4100 to deliver on-demand, anywhere communication between vehicles or assets and the network operations center enabling real-time tracking, monitoring and vehicle management. The LMU-4100 can store up to 10,000 data captures-nearly three weeks worth of information-to enable delivery of critical information captured in situations when vehicles temporarily travel outside the area of network coverage.
"Using Kyocera Modules, tools and support gives CalAmp's customers a field-proven wireless communication tool that allows personnel to react to and interact with up-to-the-minute information from the field," said Dean Fledderjohn, general manager of the M2M product line at Kyocera Wireless Corp. "CalAmp delivers a dynamic and easy-to-integrate LMU that is competitively priced and ready for forward evolution without the need for costly hardware overhauls."
The LMU-4100 is over-the-air programmable so that firmware, configuration parameters and rules can easily be updated without returning to the shop for maintenance. Designed for durability to meet U.S. military and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) specifications for harsh environments, it is ideal for use in industries such as trucking and transportation, field service, delivery and distribution, construction and public works.
"With Kyocera as one of our key technology partners, we were able to quickly integrate the new Kyocera 200 Module into the CDMA LMU-4100 and immediately offer our customers a superior product that is robust enough for fleet management solutions ranging from simple to sophisticated," said Michael Burdiek, president of CalAmp's Wireless DataCom Division. "Ultimately, the new CDMA LMU-4100 can improve overall efficiency and productivity while streamlining mobile asset distribution and deployment. It's a terrific example of how M2M technology can help end-users improve the bottom line."
