Sprint Accelerates Discovery and Development of New Mobile Technology

Sprint Accelerates Discovery and Development of New Mobile Technology OVERLAND PARK, Kan., May 22, 2012 - While Sprint customers are reaping the benefits of unlimited data using the industry’s best smartphones, Sprint is carefully nurturing the next wave of innovations in mobile products, services and technology.

Under the direction of Sprint CTO Stephen Bye, the Sprint Technology Development & Strategy team is dedicated to seeking out and directly engaging with start-ups and innovators working on emerging products, services and technology from around the globe.

“Delivering support for innovation goes far beyond simply pouring money into a project,” said Bye. “At Sprint, we pride ourselves on always striving to be the carrier that’s easiest to do business with. For example, when we collaborate with start-ups we can help them extend the reach of their products and get in the door with other companies where they might receive funding or sell their services.”

Lookout and Safely are two of the many start-ups successfully working with Sprint to build their businesses. Sprint, together with Lookout and Safely, will soon be launching Sprint Guardian, a collection of mobile family safety and device security bundles that provide families relevant tools to help stay safe and secure. Sprint Guardian was announced May 8 at the 2012 CTIA Wireless trade show and was named “Best of CTIA Wireless 2012: Best Mobile Security Service” by LAPTOP magazine.

“Recognizing the best innovation opportunities is a key piece of what makes Sprint a top-notch data service organization,” said Tasso Roumeliotis, CEO of Location Labs, the makers of Safely. “We are excited to collaborate on even more great customer services and mobile experiences.”

“Sprint is taking a radically different approach when it comes to finding the best way to deliver value for its customers,” said Kevin Mahaffey, co-founder and CTO at Lookout. “It’s clear the Sprint team values innovation; they are able to quickly identify cutting-edge technologies that will enhance their customer’s mobile experience.”

Sprint identifies and evaluates new opportunities through third-party and Sprint-hosted showcases and senior executive meetings in the United States and abroad. Through its “innovation funnel” program within the past 12 months, Sprint has explored hundreds of new opportunities with many key partners, including Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent, Amdocs and Qualcomm; a number of venture capital firms, such as Andreessen Horowitz, Intel Capital, New Venture Partners, SV Angel, Khosla Ventures, Pitango, and Greenspring Associates; and start-up friendly organizations Plug and Play Tech Center and the Telecom Council of Silicon Valley.

Sprint is also working with a number of industry associations, such as the Israel Mobile & Media Association (IMA); Wavefront, accelerating the growth and success of wireless companies in Canada; and the Korean Trade Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA). These agencies function as accelerators for their respective country’s high-tech start-up companies.

In addition to hosting events to identify promising technologies and backing entrepreneurs by providing distribution, marketing and partnership in general, Sprint also provides tools that make development easier to do. At the Sprint Collaboration Center in Burlingame, Calif., Sprint provides facilities and infrastructure for start-ups and innovators to partner and test their proposed products, services and technologies. Sprint’s Application Developer Program provides online resources and forums for discussion and culminates each year in the Sprint Open Solutions Conference attended by thousands of app developers, VCs and start-ups.

Sprint has a long history of innovation: being the first to launch a nationwide all-digital PCS network; the first to upgrade a nationwide network to 3G; and the first national mobile carrier to offer wireless 4G services.

“We believe that continual innovation is necessary for us to meet our customers’ needs and to win in the market,” said Bye. “We recognize innovation is happening all over the world and we are focused on partnership with open collaboration and enablement of our assets to create an environment to bring innovation and emerging technology and services to our customers.”

Sprint Pioneers Service Simplifying Wireless Communications for Individuals with Speech Disabilities

Sprint Pioneers Service Simplifying Wireless Communications for Individuals with Speech Disabilities OVERLAND PARK, Kan., May 18, 2012 - Sprint today has made it easier for individuals with speech disabilities to initiate calls using a wireless phone. Sprint’s newly launched “My Wireless STS” service enables individuals with speech disabilities to simply dial a short wireless code – *787 – to place an operator-assisted call.

A Speech to Speech (STS) operator listens to the conversation and repeats the words of the person with a speech disability to the other party. STS users can instruct the STS operator to repeat every word spoken or to simply repeat the words that are unclear. No special equipment is needed.

STS users can access the *787 service from anywhere in the country 24 hours a day, 365 days per year – and at no charge to the user.

“We are very excited to announce *787 – a service that’s tailored to the needs of STS users,” said Michael Ellis, Director, Sprint Relay. “We are the first in the industry to bring this service to market, and we’re pleased to have developed it in collaboration with speech disabled communities across the country.”

Sprint also offers “My Email Set-up” for STS users with access to email. “We know that some STS users may tire and speech may become more difficult during long calls. Our new Email Set-Up makes it easier,” Ellis said. “To reduce the amount of energy needed to provide calling instructions, STS users can email that information directly to the STS operator 2 to 24 hours prior to the call. This can include information such as the number to be dialed, the name of the person being called, any special instructions and subject of the call, or anything that makes it easier for the STS user to complete the call.”

Sprint also recently announced the availability of dedicated customer service for STS users. Sprint’s STS support staff provides one-on-one assistance, training on the STS service and can assist STS users to register their calling preferences. The new STS support toll-free number is 1-877-787-1989.

More information about the enhanced STS features can be found at

For its innovation and industry-leading customer service in the deaf, hard of hearing and speech disabled communities, Sprint has been lauded with third-party awards and endorsements. The Paisley Group National Relay TTY Performance Index™ ranked Sprint Relay highest in customer care and speed of service. Sprint Relay also earned ABILITY Magazine’s Best Practices Award for its “spirit of inclusion” in the workplace and in the consumer marketplace.”

Sprint now provides relay service to 32 states and the federal government, to the country of New Zealand and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Sprint also provides Captioned Telephone “CapTel” services to 31 states and the federal government.

Sprint Announces Sprint Guardian – An Industry First Bringing Together Mobile Security and Safety Applications

Sprint Announces Sprint Guardian – An Industry First Bringing Together Mobile Security and Safety Applications NEW ORLEANS, May 08, 2012 - In a poll of wireless customers, 82 percent of users do not have safety or security applications installed on their device, and most are unaware of solutions that can better protect them and their family.1 Sprint (NYSE) announced today the upcoming release of Sprint Guardian, a collection of mobile family safety and device security bundles that provide families relevant tools to help stay safe and secure.

Sprint Guardian features leading mobile applications from Safely and Lookout. The family safety bundle from Safely enables families to protect their phone-carrying children through location checks and limits on texting while driving or at school for $9.99 per month, for up to five lines on an account. With the device security bundle from Lookout, customers also can protect their mobile devices from loss and malware for one single charge of $4.99 per month for up to five lines on an account. Sprint customers also have the option to purchase both bundles for a single monthly fee of just $14.98. For a family of five, that offers a 73 percent savings – more than $39 per month - over purchasing each application in the family safety and device security bundles separately. Sprint Guardian will be available this summer on many Sprint Android™-powered devices through Sprint Zone. Customers can find Sprint Zone as an icon on their device.2

“With Sprint Guardian, we’re helping to make it easy for individuals and families to manage how their children are using their mobile phone and giving them the tools they need to protect their wireless devices from theft, loss and malware,” said Fared Adib, vice president-Product Development, Sprint. “Sprint is pleased to be the first in the industry to unify innovative safety and security applications from Safely and Lookout in two simple bundles at a great value for our customers.”

Inside Sprint Guardian: Safely and Lookout

The family safety tools from Safely bring together three applications to help parents keep their kids safe and focused on what matters whether they are at home, at school or on-the-go.

• Sprint Mobile Controls – Clearly understand your child’s talk, text and app use habits. Lock your child’s phone on demand or schedule locks – during dinner, school or late at night. Browse your child’s contacts and apps downloaded to the phone.

• Sprint Drive First – Automatically locks your teenagers’ mobile phones when they’re traveling more than 10 mph and unlocks when they stop driving. Direct incoming calls to voicemail and silence distracting alerts while driving.

• Sprint Family Locator – Quickly and easily locate your family members on an interactive map. Set up automatic location checks to get notified that your kids made it to school safely and on time.

The Family Safety bundle will be available for $9.99 per month for up to five lines on the same account.

“We are excited to be part of the Sprint Guardian service for families,” said Tasso Roumeliotis, CEO of Location Labs, the makers of Safely products. “Parents are concerned about children’s phone use, and Sprint’s solution, using Safely management tools, makes it even easier for families to have peace of mind about their children’s mobile experience.”

Lookout Family, a new product available to Sprint customers, enables people to manage their phone security by protecting against identity theft and fraud, to find a family member’s missing device when it is lost or stolen, and to back up their precious data. Lookout Family includes:

• Security – Protect your family’s smartphones from evolving mobile threats including malware, spyware, phishing and malicious websites.

• Missing Device – Find a family member’s lost phone on a map, sound an alarm, and lock or wipe your device to protect personal information.

• Management – Easily protect and manage your family’s mobile devices at, including backing up photos, contacts and call history.

Lookout Family will be available for $4.99 per month, or up to $49.99 per year, for up to five lines on the same account.

“Sprint is a leader in wireless communications, and we are excited to work together to bring mobile security to families through Sprint Guardian,” said John Hering, CEO of Lookout. “Families want mobile security to be easy, and Sprint Guardian leverages Lookout to deliver a simple solution to safeguarding smartphones.”

Ericsson Strengthens LTE Partnership with SK Telecom

Ericsson Strengthens LTE Partnership with SK Telecom May 3, 2012 -

• SK Telecom, South Korea's largest operator, signs contract with Ericsson to provide LTE services to its subscribers in the country's major cities

• Ericsson strengthens its position in LTE and becomes one of SK Telecom's main partners

• More SK Telecom subscribers will now benefit from an enhanced mobile-broadband experience and improved latency

Demand for LTE services in South Korea has increased rapidly since the commercial launch of the technology in the country in July 2011. By the end of April 2012, SK Telecom (NYSE:SKM) - South Korea's leading operator with more than 26 million mobile subscribers -reached 2.4 million LTE subscribers. To meet this fast-growing demand, SK Telecom has selected Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) to extend its LTE network. The LTE network extension will be carried out by Ericsson's operating unit in Korea, LG-Ericsson and is scheduled to be completed within the first half of this year.

This agreement for the commercial launch of LTE services in some of the country's major cities - including Busan and Daegu - makes Ericsson one of the operator's main partners.

SK Telecom highlighted that meeting its users' expectations and delivering high-quality services are priorities, and that it is important to work constantly to make improvements in these areas. Having Ericsson as a partner to help expand its LTE service offering to its subscribers is considered a very positive thing.

Martin Wiktorin, President and CEO of LG-Ericsson, says: "As a result of this expansion, SK Telecom will be able to offer its users broader network coverage and an enhanced mobile-broadband experience, ensuring continued loyalty among its customers and continued market leadership."

"LG-Ericsson will provide the LTE network including LTE RAN and Evolved Packet Core as well as support services including engineering, design, deployment and support services. The LTE radio access network will make use of Ericsson's Operation Support System for Radio & Core (OSS-RC) and RBS 6000 base stations."

Sprint Professional Mobility Services Expand to Offer More Choices for Businesses to Simplify Management and Security Within a Complex “Bring Your Own Device” Workplace

Sprint Professional Mobility Services Expand to Offer More Choices for Businesses to Simplify Management and Security Within a Complex “Bring Your Own Device” Workplace OVERLAND PARK, Kan., May 03, 2012 - Sprint announces the expansion of the Sprint Professional Mobility Services portfolio, a suite of managed and professional solutions designed to help businesses simplify management and security across an increasingly complex mix of devices in the workplace. New to the portfolio is Sprint Device Management, which delivers mobile device management and security capabilities across multiple carriers and operating systems with industry leading companies such as AirWatch and Zenprise®, Inc. The portfolio also includes Sprint Mobility Management, which was announced in 2011.

While the Sprint Professional Mobility Services suite of capabilities concentrate on added levels of security and management in a multi-carrier environment, Sprint understands that businesses have core expectations of security capabilities in the devices they select. Therefore, Sprint collaborated with mobile device OEMs and application providers to create the new Sprint Professional Grade designation for select smartphones that offer robust “out of the box” security, device management and Exchange Active Sync capabilities.

“We designed Professional Mobility Services as a portfolio of multi-carrier services that can meet any business customers’ unique needs, from providing a greater level of security and management of devices and applications via the new Sprint Device Management to managing the complexity of cross carrier expenses, deployment, lifecycle, policy management and dedicated support,” said Will Souder, vice president of marketing, Sprint. “Businesses are challenged with managing a wide variety of corporate-liable smartphones and tablets along with allowing employees to use their personal device from any carrier for business purposes. Our comprehensive approach with both Professional Mobility Services and the Professional Grade device designation addresses this challenge by providing businesses the flexibility of choice and capabilities.”

Key offers within the Sprint Professional Mobility Services portfolio include:

• Sprint Device Management benefits businesses that have security and device management requirements that go beyond the standard “out of the box” capabilities provided by basic operating system and application solutions. The new Sprint-billed solutions provide robust device security and management across multiple device types with tools to closely manage Administrator sync settings, alerts for non-compliance, security management, software application or distribution, hardware controls/hardware configuration, advance reporting/analytics and content filtering.

Starting with AirWatch and Zenprise, Sprint is working with industry-recognized leaders in mobile device management and security to support devices across all carriers so customers can deploy and maintain one solution for all of their mobile devices. • For businesses that need a more consultative and complex approach to managing their mobile environment beyond just security, Sprint Mobility Management provides a wide array of services for telecom expense management, procurement/logistics, and troubleshooting across all carriers.

Sprint Professional Mobility Services are available through Sprint’s business sales team, along with a broad portfolio of wireless and converged solutions.

“Businesses are seeking solutions to help manage and secure the growing variety of mobile devices and applications required for their employees,” said Suzanne Hopkins, research analyst, Mobile Services at IDC. “Managed mobility solutions no longer only focus on cost savings and contract management; instead incorporating a mobile device management solution is a key component businesses are considering when choosing a managed mobility provider. By incorporating an MDM focus within their Professional Mobility solution, Sprint acknowledges the varied and growing needs of the mobile business.”

Sprint Professional Grade devices offer “out of the box” advanced security and control

With the new Sprint Professional Grade designation, businesses can be confident that select devices will have password policy support, calendar functions, remote wipe, and other advanced Exchange Active Sync policies. In addition, Device Management will be available from solution providers, such as AirWatch and Zenprise, for Professional Grade devices. Professional Grade devices also will support security features including encryption for data at rest and VPN support for remote connectivity to help keep critical data safe.

The first devices available with the Sprint Professional Grade designation are the Motorola PHOTON™ 4G, Motorola Admiral™ and Samsung Galaxy S™ II Epic 4G™ Touch. Also included will be the recently announced HTC EVO™ 4G LTE (the availability date will be announced later). Additional smartphones will be available this year with the designation across a variety of manufacturers and operating systems. Customers will see the Sprint Professional Grade designation as they search for, research and purchase devices on

Sprint Mobile Security and Network leadership

Sprint is committed to comprehensively addressing mobile security for businesses and consumers, and to developing and raising awareness of security and protection solutions. In 2011 Sprint launched the Mobile Security Council to bring together key players in the mobile ecosystem to address protection, safety and security needs important to consumers and businesses. Charter members of the council are Lookout, Cisco, IBM, Juniper Networks, Motorola Mobility along with its subsidiary 3LM, and Samsung.

In addition, to ensure that future demand for wireless connectivity will be met, Sprint embarked on a multiyear initiative to provide an enhanced network experience expected to provide faster data speeds and improved voice quality, while creating network flexibility, reducing operating costs and improving environmental sustainability. The program, called Network Vision, involves the deployment of multimode base stations across many of Sprint’s cell sites throughout the country. When deployed, Network Vision is expected to improve coverage outside and inside buildings.

New CDMA Base Station Launched by Nokia Siemens Networks #CTIA12

New CDMA Base Station Launched by Nokia Siemens Networks #CTIA12 International CTIA Wireless®, New Orleans, USA – May 2, 2012 –

• Can reduce base station operating costs up to 70%

• 4G upgrade capability underlines commitment to technology evolution

Nokia Siemens Networks is bringing the benefits of its globally recognized Flexi Multiradio Base Station platform* to CDMA** operators. Nokia Siemens Networks is launching its Flexi Multiradio CDMA Base Station at International CTIA Wireless® 2012 next week. The new base station is energy efficient and compact, helping operators to lower costs as well as allowing a smooth migration to LTE. The launch emphasizes the company’s long-term commitment to CDMA by integrating the technology into its wider Flexi base station portfolio.

The new base station offers CDMA operators low total cost of ownership (TCO). Nokia Siemens Networks tests have shown that, compared to earlier generations of base stations, the new product can reduce base station operating costs by up to 70%. By sharply reducing power consumption, the Flexi Multiradio CDMA Base Station cuts both running costs and the need for power-hungry air conditioning. The compact size of the new base station minimizes site space requirements, decreases rental costs and makes it easier to deploy in indoor and outdoor locations.

”We’ve integrated our acquired CDMA capabilities into the industry-leading Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Multiradio Base Station portfolio, focusing on customers’ on-going needs. To achieve this, we have invested significant R&D resources to create flexible future options for CDMA operators including multi-technology capabilities,” said Scott Mottonen, head of the CDMA/LTE business line, Nokia Siemens Networks. “CDMA continues to represent a significant and growing opportunity in many markets. In particular, recent advances in CDMA technologies and the availability of a wide range of terminals have enhanced capabilities to meet subscriber expectations for advanced services. CDMA operators now have the opportunity to deploy solutions with a consistent approach and format.”

Using the common Flexi Multiradio Base Station format makes the integration of CDMA into multi-technology sites straightforward, which is especially important given the ongoing adoption of LTE. The base station provides some of the latest CDMA 1X Advanced*** (voice) and EV-DO**** (data) capabilities, as well as flexibility and scalability to meet future demands. With this base station, operators can be assured that their CDMA investments are protected as they transition towards LTE.

The Flexi Multiradio CDMA Base Station is backed by Nokia Siemens Networks’ global experts and complete portfolio of services including consultancy, design and planning, systems integration, deployment, optimization, maintenance, and managed services.

The Flexi Multiradio CDMA Base Station will be available for commercial deployments in the 800MHz and 1900MHz frequency bands by the end of 2012, with additional frequency bands provided based on market demand.

A demonstration of the new base station can be seen at the Nokia Siemens Networks stand (Booth # 3701, Hall D) at International CTIA Wireless® 2012.
