Sprint and WMC Global Launch New Service to Help Developers Promote Their Apps

Sprint and WMC Global Launch New Service to Help Developers Promote Their Apps OVERLAND PARK, Kan., October 31, 2011 - One of the biggest hurdles developers face in the fast growing Android Market is how to get their application noticed. With the Android Market boasting more than 250,000 apps and more being added every day, developers need to be creative and maybe have a little luck for their app to become the hottest app in the Android Market. To help overcome this challenge, Sprint announced today a new program with WMC Global called Place Your Ad, which will give developers the opportunity to secure feature placement for their applications.

Through Place Your Ad, developers can submit bids to obtain prominent placement to market their application in the Sprint Zone and the Sprint Tab in the Android Market. Place Your Ad allows developers to control where and when their app is featured in Sprint Zone or the Sprint Tab and how much they want to offer for this placement. Place Your Ad will initially be offered in Sprint Zone and the Sprint Tab with plans to offer additional opportunities. For more information on Place Your Ad and to submit an offer, visit

“Through the years of working with many talented developers, we have heard over and over how difficult it is to get creative and innovative apps noticed in the marketplace,” said Kevin McGinnis, vice president-Product for Sprint. “Sprint is excited to offer developers an opportunity to give their apps feature placement in Sprint Zone or the Sprint Tab through Place Your Ad.”

Sprint Zone and Sprint Tab in the Android Market

Sprint Zone is a free downloadable application that makes it easy for Sprint customers to pay bills, manage their account, and check voice and data usage right from their device. Sprint Zone also includes a section with suggested applications from the Android Market. Apps within Sprint Zone are updated weekly, and a Sprint Zone notification is sent to customers to inform them. Sprint also will be updating the Sprint Tab in the Android Market weekly. This feature tab appears to Sprint customers in the Android Market’s app section. Developers have reported a significant increase in downloads when their app is featured in the Sprint Zone and Sprint Tab.

“We’re extremely pleased to work with Sprint in delivering the Place Your Ad technology,” said Robin Thompson, WMC Global chief marketing officer. “This technology truly levels the playing field for developers, allowing them to call attention to their apps at the most critical time, whether it be at launch, around a specific event, or even at a particular time of year.”

Cellular Network Upgraded in Iqaluit

Cellular Network Upgraded in Iqaluit October 26, 2011 - Cellular customers in Iqaluit will enjoy faster data speeds on their smart phones and a better call quality as a result of a network upgrade. Over the last two months, crews upgraded the local network from CDMA 1xRTT to EVDO, which will increase capacity and data speeds. EVDO stands for Evolution-Data Optimized, a wireless standard that separates voice and data onto different channels.

“Northwestel is very pleased to respond to customer demand through this upgrade,” said Curtis Shaw, Northwestel Vice President, Consumer and Small Business. “The upgrade will vastly improve the quality of cellular service in Iqaluit.”

No changes to handsets are required to take advantage of the performance improvements. All CDMA handsets will continue to work on the upgraded network. Customers may have already noticed the icon in the top right hand corner of their screens has changed from 1x to EVDO.

Northwestel provides complete telecommunications solutions and entertainment services in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon, northern British Columbia and High Level, Alberta. The company’s operations span nearly 4 million square kilometres of the most remote and rugged areas of Canada.

Cellcom Readies Its Network for 4G

Cellcom Readies Its Network for 4G (October 11, 2011) – Cellcom has begun preparations to deploy fourth-generation (4G) long-term evolution (LTE) technology across their network.

According to president and CEO Patrick Riordan, Cellcom has purchased cellular equipment for the advanced 4G wireless network from Ericsson, a world leader in mobile technologies, and will begin installing the equipment through the remainder of 2011. Extensive network testing will begin in early 2012 and the company plans to deploy 4G LTE across all of its Wisconsin markets by the end of 2012. As the 4G network is turned up, customers will simultaneously have access to a nationwide 4G network thanks to Cellcom partnerships.

“Our aggressive 4G strategy will allow us to provide the same technology that is offered in major metropolitan areas to residents of Northeast and Central Wisconsin and in our service area in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula,” Riordan said. “Meeting the needs of our rural customers is always a key priority, and we are proud to be launching LTE service in these smaller markets as part of our comprehensive plan.” Cellcom is also working to ensure that a quality network is available when 4G is turned up in 2012.

“A quality 4G-network combines a number of elements working together efficiently,” said Jim Lienau, chief technical officer of Cellcom. “The LTE technology will deliver robust data service with superior performance and very low latency when deployed correctly. Fiber, radio equipment, installation, testing and devices all play a pivotal role in a positive user-end experience with 4G technology.”

Cellcom has a robust fiber-optic network throughout much of its service area and is currently working on three separate projects to expand their fiber network in Oconto and Marinette counties, Door County and Marathon County. Cellcom has also invested in the highest-quality 4G equipment and technicians are currently receiving advanced training.

“To deliver the fast response that 4G offers, all the equipment needs to work together more efficiently,” said Lienau. “Our technicians are being specially trained to install this new equipment and our engineers will be performing advanced testing to make sure everything is working properly.”

Devices are the final element of a quality 4G experience. A 4G-compatible device will be needed to reap the benefits of LTE technology. Cellcom customers can expect devices to be released as the network is prepared for launch. 3G-capable phones will continue to operate on the current network.

“We pride ourselves in being a creative, forward-thinking rural carrier,” said Riordan. “Our latest investment demonstrates this commitment to our customers.”

The camera records the dangerous action and notifies a responsible party – usually the parents or fleet manager. This and other M2M applications have emerged as valuable safety tools against distracted driving, which killed nearly 5,500 people in 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

• Through the recent acquisition of Fusion Wireless, u-blox has become a Sprint preferred wireless module provider. u-blox is a leading provider of embedded wireless communication solutions for the consumer, industrial and automotive markets offering solutions that enable people, devices, vehicles and machines to locate their exact position and wirelessly communicate via voice, text or video.

• Audiovox Electronics Corp. and Sprint are collaborating to deliver a Location Based Services and On Board Device system that will allow consumers to employ a variety of safety and convenience features designed to enhance their driving experience and vehicle management.

Increased security and energy efficiency are attracting property owners to unprecedented capabilities offered in the M2M Alarms, Sensors and Alarms segment.

Examples include:

• When cameras are used, property crime is reduced by two-thirds, according to OJO Technologies. Cernium and Sprint have used M2M to take video surveillance even further by transforming ordinary security cameras into a proactive solution. CheckVideo|Sprint 3G “watches” every camera 24/7 for events of interest and protects outdoor and remote areas that are too cost-prohibitive to monitor with conventional video surveillance systems.

Better, less expensive health care is raising M2M’s profile among medical professionals in the Personal Connected Devices segment. If doctors use wireless applications to remotely monitor patients with chronic conditions, such as diabetes or obesity, the annual savings could amount to approximately $21 billion due to a reduction in hospitalization and nursing home costs, according to the Health Research Institute. M2M solutions are helping enable effective remote monitoring. For example:

• Today Sprint and IDEAL LIFE launched kiosks for users to capture health and wellness information remotely via Sprint’s wireless network. IDEAL LIFE’s digital, two-way and interactive technology streamlines health care delivery by allowing individuals to become active participants in their own health care through education and self-management. By involving the physician only when appropriate, needless trips to the physician’s office can be saved while allowing physicians to manage more patients, more efficiently. Whether measuring blood pressure, weight, blood glucose levels or any other biometric reading, IDEAL LIFE wireless kiosk users are able to provide more accurate and immediate data to health care professionals who can, in turn, share relevant, reliable and actionable information.

• In another M2M arrangement with Orange, County, Fla., the Sprint 3G network rapidly transmits patient data – typically on heart attack victims – from ambulance EKG machines to a doctor’s smartphone. The physician can then determine the best treatment options for the patient before they arrive at the hospital, potentially saving time, money and lives.

“Not only is M2M growth exploding, it’s exploding in many directions simultaneously,” said Ward. “Whether you’re a solutions developer or a business exploring high-potential M2M ideas, you need a clear idea of where the hottest M2M growth is happening and how to engage ecosystem resources focused on those areas. Sprint has drawn on 12 years of experience with our open approach to device connectivity and categorized M2M growth into a focused, strategic framework for our customers and partners.”

Sprint has defined several sub-segments within each of the four M2M growth segments:

Connected Transportation – Fleet / Telematics / Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC) / IVC Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEMS); Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) / Pay As You Drive (PAYD); and Public Safety / Emergency.

Connected Meters, Sensors and Alarms – Utility / Smart Grid; Water / Oil / Gas; Security and Surveillance; and Automation and Control.

Connected Machines, Screens and Things – Automated Teller Machine (ATM) / Point of Sale (POS) / Access / Vending; Digital Signage and Kiosk; Asset Tracking; and Embedded Routers and Modems.

Connected Personal Devices – Personal Gaming and Tracking; Personal Health Management; and Copiers / Printers / Scanners.

Sprint executives will discuss the company’s M2M segmentation strategy at the Sprint 2011 Open Solutions Conference, Nov. 2-4, in Santa Clara, Calif. Developers, enterprises and entrepreneurs will gather to gain valuable insight into the next evolution in wireless data. Attendees will learn about Sprint’s open enablement strategy, creating applications, enterprise M2M solutions, go-to-market strategies, approaches to make developers more profitable, and current Sprint tools and capabilities across devices, networks and platforms.

Sprint and IDEAL LIFE Address Rising Medical Costs and Enhance Access to Health Care with Wireless Health Monitoring

Sprint and IDEAL LIFE Address Rising Medical Costs and Enhance Access to Health Care with Wireless Health Monitoring OVERLAND PARK, Kan. & TORONTO, October 11, 2011 - Sprint and IDEAL LIFE® today announced they have launched wireless kiosks for users to capture health and wellness information remotely. The kiosks transmit medical data using Sprint’s wireless network and are indicative of a trend within the health care industry toward more self-management and preventative care.

IDEAL LIFE is already known for its remote health monitoring platform for individuals with chronic conditions and was recently recognized as a 2011 Innovations in Healthcare ABBY Award winner. Now their new kiosks are designed for high-volume traffic and can be installed in communal settings such as community centers, libraries, schools, employer facilities, living centers, gyms, health clinics and physician offices.

IDEAL LIFE’s digital, two-way and interactive technology streamlines health care delivery by empowering individuals to actively regulate their health through education and self-management, involving the physician when appropriate, thereby saving needless trips to the physician’s office while equipping physicians to manage more patients, more efficiently. Whether measuring blood pressure, weight, blood glucose levels or any other biometric reading, IDEAL LIFE kiosk users are able to provide more accurate and immediate data to health care professionals who can, in turn, respond with relevant, reliable and actionable information.

Using technology to stay connected to health care

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications entails devices other than cell phones talking directly to each other over the Sprint wireless network. In the case of health care, M2M connects consumers—the chronically ill, aging or those who just want to improve overall wellness—with easy-to-use medical applications. The IDEAL LIFE kiosk is an example of how wireless technologies, combined with medical applications, can transform health care delivery.

“Wireless M2M solutions present an opportunity to streamline health care and provide greater access to critical patient information at significantly less cost and effort,” said Wayne Ward, vice president-Emerging Solutions Group, Sprint. “Sprint is proud to collaborate with IDEAL LIFE to facilitate real-time dialog and data exchange between individuals and medical professionals. The potential to impact patient wellness and physician efficiency in an on-demand setting is just one example of how connected devices are fundamentally changing every aspect of the way we work and live.”

The prescription for affordable health care is telemedicine

An IDEAL LIFE-sponsored study of congestive heart failure (CHF) patients showed that remote monitoring using the IDEAL LIFE system offers significant benefits. Among 200 CHF patients, the cost for hospital admissions was reduced from $1.26 million to $540,000.

“IDEAL LIFE already has a strong track record of health care cost reduction,” said Jason Goldberg, president-IDEAL LIFE. “Our collaboration with Sprint will allow seamless integration into the marketplace with the IDEAL LIFE kiosk, enabling our company to quickly deploy more solutions providing greater access to care and creating additional health care savings.”

Independent studies support IDEAL LIFE’s findings. Statistics from the Health Research Institute suggest that telemedicine has the potential to reduce costs, extend accessibility and enhance overall effectiveness of health care delivery.

• If doctors use wireless applications to remotely monitor patients with chronic conditions, such as diabetes or obesity, the annual savings could amount to approximately $21 billion due to a reduction in hospitalization and nursing home costs.

• 88 percent of physicians would like their patients to be able to monitor their health on their own.

• During a two-year study by the Health Research Institute, e-visits were able to replace in-office visits in 40 percent of the 2,531 cases.

Sprint ID Celebrates One-year Anniversary with Six Million ID Pack Downloads, 45 ID Packs, 12 Sprint ID-Capable Devices, Kudos from Partners and Media

Sprint ID Celebrates One-year Anniversary with Six Million ID Pack Downloads, 45 ID Packs, 12 Sprint ID-Capable Devices, Kudos from Partners and Media OVERLAND PARK, Kan., October 10, 2011 - One year ago Sprint launched another industry first – Sprint ID – a service that simplifies the process of customizing select Android™ powered devices. Sprint “ID packs” deliver a complete mobile experience – centered around consumers’ or businesses’ interests or favorite brands – including applications, widgets, ringtones and wallpapers, in a couple simple clicks.

Whether they’re a sports fan, music lover, celebrity watcher, fitness fanatic, gamer, student or business professional, Sprint ID makes it easy for customers to personalize their smartphone or tablet by allowing them to download an ID pack with mobile content to fit their lifestyle.

In addition to ID packs that appeal to a broad consumer base, since it launched, the Sprint ID pack concept has been deployed for niche users, including:

• Universities as a way to offer useful information to students and faculty. University of Missouri launched a student ID pack and several other universities are currently developing ID packs.

• Six wholesale partners have launched Sprint ID devices to their customer bases.

• Boost Mobile’s Mobile ID launched, featuring eight ID packs for prepaid users.

• Sprint developed an Employee ID pack for internal Sprint employee use.

• Other enterprises have deployed ID packs targeting specific groups of users within their companies.

• Sprint’s Green ID pack offers apps and widgets with tips for living a more environmentally sustainable lifestyle.

• Sprint’s Relay ID pack provides the hard of hearing with voice mail transcripts, visual and vibrating alerts, readable captions and more.

“Sprint ID helps customers – especially those new to smartphones – easily gain access to apps they’ll enjoy without the daunting task of wading through Android Market’s 250,000+ apps,” said Kevin McGinnis, vice president-Product, Sprint. “Even more so now than when we launched Sprint ID last year, since so much of the population is buying smartphones1, we realize that we need to give customers an easier path to access content. We’re also excited about not just the opportunities Sprint ID has presented to consumers but also to our business customers with ID packs such as Real Estate Pro.”

What partners are saying:

“MTV Music ID provides today’s on-the-go music fan easy access to their favorite MTV and third-party music content through multiple music-centric apps and widgets,” said Dermot McCormack, executive vice president-Digital Media, MTV Networks Music & Logo Group “We’re pleased to have partnered with Sprint on this unique, popular and innovative product.”

“We recently launched the E! ID pack, giving fans a complete E! mobile experience on their Android device, including our popular E! Online, Keeping Up With the Kardashians and Live From the Red Carpet apps, and the response from our audience has been terrific,” said John Najarian, executive vice president and general manager-Digital and Business Development, E! Entertainment. “Creating an ID pack with Sprint was an easy way for us to offer our audience all of our best mobile content in a bundled package.”

“Creating the three Lo2Yo ID packs for the Latino community has made it so much easier for bilingual [English/Spanish] users to access culturally relevant and high-quality content, as well as enabling them to quickly switch between the two languages,” said Jorge Rincon, CEO of LatCel.”Lo2Yo IDs have become a fantastic way to engage with the highly coveted Hispanic market audience.”

What the media is saying:

Sprint users needn’t be overwhelmed by the number of app choices on their Android phones. The carrier’s Sprint ID service offers prepackaged apps that cater to different tastes and hobbies. –The New York Times

Sprint’s Green ID Pack is installed on specific phones and tablets, but any Android user can download the environmentally friendly apps in the pack. TreeHugger, Green Now and Shop Green are among the apps listed. With iRecycle (free for iPhone and Android), you identify what you want to recycle and the app tells you where to take it. –The New York Times

For the first time since switching to AT&T to become an iPhone devotee, I’m a little jealous of Sprint users. Sprint’s new Green ID Pack lets customers download eco-friendly content directly to their smartphones...It’s a great example of a brand using content to encourage loyalty and connect with users. –Get a Word In

Android is one of the most customizable platforms around, and Sprint ID is a great option to quickly give your phone a totally new look and feel. The nice thing about the MTV Music ID pack is that it includes several apps that many users install anyway, like SoundHound and Pandora. If you love music and have a Samsung Transform, LG Optimus S or Sanyo Zio, be sure to check out the MTC Music ID pack. –PhoneDog

Sprint launched the effort back at the CTIA show in October, but is now getting up to speed by both adding more devices compatible with Sprint ID and by lining up some brand-name content. –All Things Digital

For content providers like MTV, the Sprint ID pack format represents an opportunity to deliver content directly to the mobile audience--in many ways, its approach recalls the MVNO model, but without the service plans and handsets. In addition, the ID packs offer publishers the opportunity to curate consumers' mobile app download experience, guaranteeing that users obtain an aggregate of integrated, complementary solutions in one fell swoop. –FierceMobileContent

Sprint ID stats:

• Customers have downloaded six million ID packs

• Average 500,000 downloads per month

• The most popular branded Sprint ID packs include Disney Channel, ESPN, E!, Glu Games, MTV, NASCAR, Yahoo!

• Popular lifestyle ID categories include Entertainment, Green, Socially Connected, Health & Fitness, Fashion & Beauty, Business Professional, Auto Enthusiast and several Spanish-language ID packs from LatCel.

Benefits to developers/partners:

• Allows strong content partners to become mobile service providers without the cost and hassle of running a nationwide cellular network, billing integration, or device manufacturing commitments.

• Provides an additional distribution channel for applications and services.

• Improves the search and discoverability of Android apps and services versus the current experience in Android Market™.

• Provides consumer brands, enterprises, B-2-B and hybrid MVNOs with the ability to define the experience they want for their customers/employees via mobile bundles.

Sprint Accelerates Deployment of Network Vision and Announces National Rollout of 4G LTE

Sprint Accelerates Deployment of Network Vision and Announces National Rollout of 4G LTE OVERLAND PARK, Kan., October 07, 2011 - At its 4G Strategy/Network Vision Update event today in New York, Sprint Nextel updated the financial community on its plans to accelerate deployment of Network Vision and its plans to roll out 4G LTE on its licensed spectrum. Network Vision, originally announced in December 2010, is Sprint’s plan to consolidate multiple network technologies into one seamless network with the goal of increasing efficiency and enhancing network coverage, call quality and data speeds for customers across the United States.

Dan Hesse, Sprint CEO, said, “Our progress deploying Network Vision enables Sprint to extend and evolve our 4G leadership and to improve the experience for 3G customers. Our next-generation network and cutting-edge device lineup, combined with the industry’s best pricing plans, give Sprint customers the best experience in wireless.”

The company's presentation today, which featured Hesse; Steve Elfman, president-Network Operations and Wholesale; Bob Azzi, senior vice president-Network; Fared Adib, vice president-Product Development; and Joseph Euteneuer, chief financial officer, highlighted the following:

• Sprint making significant progress on Network Vision deployment. Sprint reviewed progress to date in deploying Network Vision, including the rollout and successful testing and trialing of multimode technology, the launch of Sprint® Direct Connect® on the CDMA network and the new devices launching in the fourth quarter. As a result of the success and the progress made so far, the company is now targeting completion of Network Vision deployment by the end of 2013 – two years sooner than originally scheduled.

• Sprint will begin a rapid national rollout of LTE on its 1900MHz spectrum. Sprint plans to launch 4G LTE on its 1900MHz spectrum by midyear 2012 and complete the network build-out by the end of 2013. By the conclusion of 2013, Sprint’s 4G coverage footprint is expected to cover more than 250 million people.

Sprint expects to launch CDMA-LTE devices by mid-2012, with approximately 15 devices coming throughout the year – including handsets, tablets and data cards. Additionally, CDMA-WiMAX 4G devices, like the award-winning HTC EVOTM 4G, Samsung EpicTM 4G Touch and Nexus STM 4G, will continue to be sold throughout 2012.

• Sprint introduces spectrum-hosting business. Management described Sprint’s unique ability to host third-party spectrum and how it’s made possible through the Network Vision multimode base stations. The spectrum-hosting opportunity capitalizes on Sprint’s Network Vision platform and uses its flexible, open technology architecture. Spectrum hosting is a new revenue opportunity for Sprint and a cost-effective way to gain additional network capacity to better serve Sprint customers.

• Network Vision provides significant economic benefit to Sprint. Sprint reaffirmed the economic benefits associated with Network Vision. As declared last December, Network Vision is expected to cost an incremental $4 billion to $5 billion and deliver $10 billion to $11 billion in net economic value to the company between 2011 and 2017. Operating Income Before Depreciation and Amortization (OIBDA) margin is expected to improve 400 to 600 basis points or about 4 percent to 6 percent from current levels by 2014. The primary components of value come from a broader footprint (reduced roaming costs), cell-site reduction, the elimination of dual networks, backhaul efficiencies, reduced churn, more efficient use of capital and energy cost savings.

In parallel to the Network Vision initiative, Sprint also stated that it is pursuing improvements in its core operations that could result in an additional 400 to 600 basis points or about 4 percent to 6 percent of OIBDA margin improvement by 2014.

Euteneuer said, “Network Vision creates a platform for growth and competitive advantage and delivers significant profitability upside potential. Over the long term, continued execution on Network Vision as well as other improvements to our core operations are expected to result in overall margin expansion, improved return on invested capital, and, ultimately, increased value for our shareholders.”
