Sprint and WMC Global Launch New Service to Help Developers Promote Their Apps OVERLAND PARK, Kan., October 31, 2011 - One of the biggest hurdles developers face in the fast growing Android Market is how to get their application noticed. With the Android Market boasting more than 250,000 apps and more being added every day, developers need to be creative and maybe have a little luck for their app to become the hottest app in the Android Market. To help overcome this challenge, Sprint announced today a new program with WMC Global called Place Your Ad, which will give developers the opportunity to secure feature placement for their applications.

Through Place Your Ad, developers can submit bids to obtain prominent placement to market their application in the Sprint Zone and the Sprint Tab in the Android Market. Place Your Ad allows developers to control where and when their app is featured in Sprint Zone or the Sprint Tab and how much they want to offer for this placement. Place Your Ad will initially be offered in Sprint Zone and the Sprint Tab with plans to offer additional opportunities. Sprint Zone and Sprint Tab in the Android Market

Sprint Zone is a free downloadable application that makes it easy for Sprint customers to pay bills, manage their account, and check voice and data usage right from their device. Sprint Zone also includes a section with suggested applications from the Android Market. Apps within Sprint Zone are updated weekly, and a Sprint Zone notification is sent to customers to inform them. Sprint also will be updating the Sprint Tab in the Android Market weekly. This feature tab appears to Sprint customers in the Android Market’s app section. Developers have reported a significant increase in downloads when their app is featured in the Sprint Zone and Sprint Tab.

Cellular Network Upgraded in Iqaluit

Cellular Network Upgraded in Iqaluit October 26, 2011 - Cellular customers in Iqaluit will enjoy faster data speeds on their smart phones and a better call quality as a result of a network upgrade. Over the last two months, crews upgraded the local network from CDMA 1xRTT to EVDO, which will increase capacity and data speeds. EVDO stands for Evolution-Data Optimized, a wireless standard that separates voice and data onto different channels.

“Northwestel is very pleased to respond to customer demand through this upgrade,” said Curtis Shaw, Northwestel Vice President, Consumer and Small Business. “The upgrade will vastly improve the quality of cellular service in Iqaluit.”

No changes to handsets are required to take advantage of the performance improvements. All CDMA handsets will continue to work on the upgraded network. Customers may have already noticed the icon in the top right hand corner of their screens has changed from 1x to EVDO.

Ericsson and Open Mobile Sign Latin America's First 4G/LTE Contract October 25, 2011

• People in Puerto Rico will be able to enjoy a superior experience in data applications, including internet surfing, online gaming, social media and video conferencing

• Deal includes Managed Services and a complete LTE radio solution with Evolved Packet Core (EPC), Mobile Backhaul supporting Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)

Puerto Rico's leading operator Open Mobile has chosen Ericsson to supply, deploy and manage its nationwide network. Under the deal, Ericsson will roll out a complete 4G/LTE solution. Ericsson will assist the operation of Open Mobile newly deployed LTE network. This is Ericsson's first full-scope contract for an LTE network combined with MPLS enabled Mobile Backhaul.

Sprint Announces Next-Generation Mobile Solution for Hard of Hearing Android Users OVERLAND PARK, Kan., October 21, 2011 - Sprint today announced the availability of Wireless CapTel by Sprint powered by Raketu, an application on select Android phones that increases accessibility in mobile communications for individuals who are hard-of-hearing.

Wireless CapTel by Sprint allows users to read conversations with real-time word-for-word captions on their wireless phones. Wireless CapTel by Sprint users place a call in the same way they would when using a traditional phone – by dialing the number directly on the device. Cellcom Readies Its Network for 4G

Cellcom Readies Its Network for 4G (October 11, 2011) – Cellcom has begun preparations to deploy fourth-generation (4G) long-term evolution (LTE) technology across their network.

According to president and CEO Patrick Riordan, Cellcom has purchased cellular equipment for the advanced 4G wireless network from Ericsson, a world leader in mobile technologies, and will begin installing the equipment through the remainder of 2011. Extensive network testing will begin in early 2012 and the company plans to deploy 4G LTE across all of its Wisconsin markets by the end of 2012. As the 4G network is turned up, customers will simultaneously have access to a nationwide 4G network thanks to Cellcom partnerships.

“Our aggressive 4G strategy will allow us to provide the same technology that is offered in major metropolitan areas to residents of Northeast and Central Wisconsin and in our service area in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula,” Riordan said. “Meeting the needs of our rural customers is always a key priority, and we are proud to be launching LTE service in these smaller markets as part of our comprehensive plan.” Cellcom is also working to ensure that a quality network is available when 4G is turned up in 2012.

“A quality 4G-network combines a number of elements working together efficiently,” said Jim Lienau, chief technical officer of Cellcom. “The LTE technology will deliver robust data service with superior performance and very low latency when deployed correctly. Sprint Accelerates Deployment of Network Vision and Announces National Rollout of 4G LTE OVERLAND PARK, Kan., October 07, 2011 - At its 4G Strategy/Network Vision Update event today in New York, Sprint Nextel updated the financial community on its plans to accelerate deployment of Network Vision and its plans to roll out 4G LTE on its licensed spectrum. Network Vision, originally announced in December 2010, is Sprint’s plan to consolidate multiple network technologies into one seamless network with the goal of increasing efficiency and enhancing network coverage, call quality and data speeds for customers across the United States.

Dan Hesse, Sprint CEO, said, “Our progress deploying Network Vision enables Sprint to extend and evolve our 4G leadership and to improve the experience for 3G customers. Our next-generation network and cutting-edge device lineup, combined with the industry’s best pricing plans, give Sprint customers the best experience in wireless.”

The company's presentation today, which featured Hesse; Steve Elfman, president-Network Operations and Wholesale; Bob Azzi, senior vice president-Network; Fared Adib, vice president-Product Development; and Joseph Euteneuer, chief financial officer, highlighted the following:

• Sprint making significant progress on Network Vision deployment. Sprint reviewed progress to date in deploying Network Vision, including the rollout and successful testing and trialing of multimode technology, the launch of Sprint® Direct Connect® on the CDMA network and the new devices launching in the fourth quarter. As a result of the success and the progress made so far, the company is now targeting completion of Network Vision deployment by the end of 2013 – two years sooner than originally scheduled.

• Sprint will begin a rapid national rollout of LTE on its 1900MHz spectrum. Sprint plans to launch 4G LTE on its 1900MHz spectrum by midyear 2012 and complete the network build-out by the end of 2013. By the conclusion of 2013, Sprint’s 4G coverage footprint is expected to cover more than 250 million people.

Sprint expects to launch CDMA-LTE devices by mid-2012, with approximately 15 devices coming throughout the year – including handsets, tablets and data cards. Additionally, CDMA-WiMAX 4G devices, like the award-winning HTC EVOTM 4G, Samsung EpicTM 4G Touch and Nexus STM 4G, will continue to be sold throughout 2012.

• Sprint introduces spectrum-hosting business. Management described Sprint’s unique ability to host third-party spectrum and how it’s made possible through the Network Vision multimode base stations. The spectrum-hosting opportunity capitalizes on Sprint’s Network Vision platform and uses its flexible, open technology architecture. Spectrum hosting is a new revenue opportunity for Sprint and a cost-effective way to gain additional network capacity to better serve Sprint customers.

• Network Vision provides significant economic benefit to Sprint. Sprint reaffirmed the economic benefits associated with Network Vision. As declared last December, Network Vision is expected to cost an incremental $4 billion to $5 billion and deliver $10 billion to $11 billion in net economic value to the company between 2011 and 2017. Operating Income Before Depreciation and Amortization (OIBDA) margin is expected to improve 400 to 600 basis points or about 4 percent to 6 percent from current levels by 2014. The primary components of value come from a broader footprint (reduced roaming costs), cell-site reduction, the elimination of dual networks, backhaul efficiencies, reduced churn, more efficient use of capital and energy cost savings.

In parallel to the Network Vision initiative, Sprint also stated that it is pursuing improvements in its core operations that could result in an additional 400 to 600 basis points or about 4 percent to 6 percent of OIBDA margin improvement by 2014.

Euteneuer said, “Network Vision creates a platform for growth and competitive advantage and delivers significant profitability upside potential. Over the long term, continued execution on Network Vision as well as other improvements to our core operations are expected to result in overall margin expansion, improved return on invested capital, and, ultimately, increased value for our shareholders.”

Under the LTE in Rural America program, Appalachian Wireless will deploy and operate a state of the art 4G LTE network which will provide greater telecommunications capabilities and choices for the residents of eastern Kentucky.
