Convergence Technologies Inc (CTI) Announces Rural LTE Partnership with Verizon Wireless

Convergence Technologies Inc (CTI) Announces Rural LTE Partnership with Verizon Wireless April 29, 2011 - Convergence Technologies Inc (CTI) announced today that the company has entered into an agreement with Verizon Wireless to participate in the company’s LTE in Rural America program. Under the program, CTI will work with Verizon Wireless to deliver 4G LTE services to rural Indiana communities within the IN-5 Cellular Market Area.

CTI has over 10 years of operational experience as a fixed wireless and wireline provider that has enabled the build-out of an extensive core backhaul, tower and value-added services infrastructure. 4G mobile broadband represents the logical next evolution of CTI’s business strategy. Under the agreement, Verizon Wireless will lease to CTI its 700 MHz upper C block wireless spectrum in the CTI service area where Verizon Wireless has not already constructed a network. This project will leverage portions of CTI’s recent $18 million Broadband Stimulus Project to bring advanced 4G wireless services to underserved rural communities throughout Illinois and Indiana. CTI expects 4G LTE speeds of up to 12 Mbps for downloads and up to 5 Mbps for uploads.

Charles Wu, Convergence Technologies CEO stated “This partnership with Verizon Wireless creates a regional powerhouse that combines CTI’s existing network and spectrum assets with a data-roaming agreement from the leading wireless network company. CTI 4G LTE customers will be able to roam on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network throughout the country and Verizon Wireless customers will be able to roam on the CTI 4G LTE network. These added LTE lease areas will increase CTI’s 4G mobile wireless coverage to over 750,000 POPs across Illinois and Indiana.” Wu added “In addition to offering voice and high-speed broadband services, 4G LTE technology will enable a variety of innovative value-added services within the mobile ecosystem. CTI plans to capitalizing on this by combining its 4G mobile carrier assets with its IP Pay payments platform, currently processing over $500 million in annual volume, to develop a mobile payments solution to address a market projected to exceed $280 billion in North America by 2014. ”

Skyfire Launches 4.0 Version Of Its Popular Android Mobile Browser With Eight New Killer Features

Skyfire Launches 4.0 Version Of Its Popular Android Mobile Browser With Eight New Killer Features MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — April 22, 2011 — Today Skyfire, maker of the award-winning and popular mobile browser, announces the release of Skyfire 4.0 for Android – its highly anticipated next-generation Android browser. Skyfire 4.0 for Android allows users to personalize their SkyBar™ toolbar, while adding eight new SkyBar features. While the basic browser and toolbar will remain free to Android users, Skyfire is also introducing a premium in-app purchase to enable its Video feature, which draws on Skyfire’s cloud-based servers to optimize videos from across the web. As a thank you to over 3 million early beta users of the app, all existing users will be “grandfathered” in for free access for the lifetime of their device.

Skyfire’s SkyBar toolbar is now scrollable and customizable, allowing for a larger and more personalized number of features to be positioned on the toolbar. Beyond the ‘Video’, ‘Facebook’, ‘Fireplace’, ‘Popular’, ‘Ideas’ & ‘Like’ buttons, Skyfire has added full Twitter, Groupon and Google Reader integration, a ‘Share’ button, Sports, News and Finance feeds, and a ‘Settings’ button.

Skyfire for Android is one of the most popular applications in the Android Market and has seen over 3 million downloads since launching in April 2010. The mobile browser was upgraded to critical acclaim in November 2010 with integrated social media and Facebook capabilities, and the app currently has a user rating of 4.5 stars out of a possible five stars, based on tens of thousands of reviews in the Android Market. This latest update will continue to build on Skyfire’s strong track record of innovation.

With v4.0, Skyfire for Android will begin offering its video optimization as an optional $2.99 premium feature, unlocked via an in-app purchase after a three day free trial. The feature pays for itself for most users around the world by allowing users to watch more video with less data usage (where users have capped or metered data plans), as well as increasing battery life.

Skyfire is offering the video optimization feature at no additional charge for a limited time to all Verizon Wireless customers who download Skyfire 4.0 for Android. Skyfire can be found in the Verizon channel of the Android Market™.

Skyfire 4.0 for Android, including the video optimization feature, will remain free for all of the over 3 million beta testers around the globe who have used the app to date, in gratitude for their support in helping Skyfire become one of the most popular apps in the Android Market.

“With Skyfire 4.0 for Android, we’re enabling users to customize their browser toolbar to fit their interests, from sports, to social networks, to finance, news, and local deals,” said Jeff Glueck, CEO of Skyfire. “While the basic browser will remain free, with the launch of Google’s Android In-App purchase platform, the time has come to make our video cloud acceleration service a premium feature that reflects the investment we make to support each user in our cloud. We deliver state-of-the art web video tuned to your current mobile connection speed, saving 75% on average data loads. For users who enjoy web video, or who are on metered data, the service can pay for itself in the first month of use.”

New Features in Skyfire 4.0 for Android include:

• Customizable SkyBar – Skyfire’s toolbar is now configurable and expandable, enabling users to create their own flavor of Skyfire experience. With the new scrollable SkyBar, users now have access to fourteen Skyfire features and have the ability to enable, disable and position each button as they see fit.

• New SkyBar Features – Skyfire has added eight new features:

o Twitter – Login to the ‘Twitter’ Button to have one-touch access to Twitter streams. Tweet, search, and check in with the Twittersphere without leaving the Skyfire browser. (And yes, watch videos shared on Twitter with just one click.)

o Groupon – With the ‘Groupon’ Button, the SkyBar is now delivering nearby deals so you can do a quick check on the deal of the day at all times.

o Share – Easily share websites, articles, pictures & videos with the touch of the ‘Share’ button, a feature previously accessible through the Skyfire menu.

o Google Reader – Use the ‘Google Reader’ Button to keep up with feeds from your favorite sites. Google Reader keeps you in the know by constantly checking your favorite news sites and blogs for new content.

o Sports, News & Finance – Three new buttons, ‘Sports’, ‘News’ & ‘Finance’, have been added to the SkyBar to bring one-touch access to the latest events.

o Settings – The ‘Settings’ button could easily be labeled the ‘Customize’ button. Use this to enable, disable or position SkyBar features to your personal preferences.

Carolina West Wireless and Verizon Wireless Partner in Rural America Initiative

Carolina West Wireless and Verizon Wireless Partner in Rural America Initiative April 21, 2011 - Carolina West Wireless announced it has entered into an agreement as part of Clear Stream Communications, LLC to partner with Verizon Wireless in the LTE in Rural America initiative.

The LTE (Long Term Evolution) in Rural America program is a Verizon Wireless initiative established in 2010 to bring the benefits of high-speed mobile broadband to rural areas of the United States by sharing access to its 700 MHz spectrum with rural operators.

Verizon Wireless plans to partner with Clear Stream to cooperatively build and operate its 4G network in Northwestern North Carolina using Clear Stream tower and backhaul assets and Verizon’s core LTE equipment. This will provide 4G LTE coverage to Carolina West subscribers, as well as Verizon Wireless customers traveling through the area. In addition, Carolina West customers will have access to Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network throughout the United States.

“This is a significant step forward in our pursuit of consistently providing our customers with the most reliable and efficient wireless data technology available,” said Slayton S. Stewart, CEO of Carolina West Wireless and managing partner of Clear Stream Communications, LLC. “Our partnership with Verizon Wireless in the LTE in Rural America initiative will allow us the opportunity to provide 4G technology to our customers, affording them the benefits of faster wireless capabilities ultimately improving and enhancing the overall customer experience.”

In December of 2010, Verizon launched its 4G LTE network in 38 metropolitan areas across the United States covering more than 110 million people. Verizon’s 4G LTE network is the fastest and most advanced 4G LTE network in the US, and is expected to cover more than 200 million people by mid-2012 and more than 290 million by the end of 2013.

"We are extremely pleased to have Clear Stream join the LTE in Rural America program. Together, our companies will be the first to offer a 4G LTE high-speed mobile data network in rural Northwestern North Carolina," said Molly Feldman, VP of Business Development for Verizon Wireless.

Carolina West customers can expect faster speeds as part of the 4G LTE network initiative with average download speeds ranging from 5-12 Mbps, speeds up to 10 times faster than the 3G network.

“Speed, flexibility and connectivity are key components in the wireless industry for residential and business customers alike — regardless of geographical location,” Stewart continued. “Wireless customers in all walks of life — from the mom on the go, to the small business owner — want accessible and dependable network coverage that gives them the freedom to use their wireless device when and where they want. Our partnership with Verizon will ensure our customers continue to have that freedom."

Verizon Wireless Launches Six New 4G LTE Markets Today

Verizon Wireless Launches Six New 4G LTE Markets Today BASKING RIDGE, NJ — April 21, 2011 — Verizon Wireless announced that it is turning on the world’s most advanced wireless network in six more metropolitan areas today, as well as expanding the 4G LTE network in Charlotte, N.C. The areas where the 4G LTE network is now available include Clarksville, Tenn.-Hopkinsville, Ky.; Cleveland, Tenn.; Columbia and Hilton Head, S.C.; Wilmington, N.C.; and the Greater Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania.

David Small, chief technical officer for Verizon Wireless, noted, “As of today, we offer consumers and businesses in 46 metropolitan areas the most advanced 4G wireless network on the planet, while continuing to offer the nation’s most reliable 3G network coast to coast. We plan to aggressively light up 4G in new cities as we expect our blazingly fast 4G LTE network will be available in more than 175 markets by the end of this year.”

Consumers can choose from several devices to access the blazingly fast speeds of the 4G LTE network, including the ThunderBolt™ by HTC, MiFi® 4510L 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot and Samsung 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot. Laptop users have been enjoying speeds up to 10 times faster than the company’s 3G network with three USB modems from Novatel, Pantech and LG since the 4G LTE network launched in December 2010. In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, 4G LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

When customers travel outside of a 4G coverage area, the devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless’ 3G network, enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast. Verizon Wireless’ 3G network is the most reliable network in the country, allowing customers with laptops and smartphones to download and use cool apps, from mobile social networking platforms to GPS-enabled maps; and can rapidly browse the web to keep up with news, sports, stock quotes, Hollywood gossip and more, work on-the-go with fast file sharing and stream must-see video and customized radio stations. Customers in 3G coverage areas today who purchase 4G devices will be able to take advantage of 4G speeds when the faster network becomes available in their areas.

Verizon Wireless is building its 4G LTE network with the same commitment to performance and reliability for which it has long been recognized. Verizon Wireless’ consistent focus on reliability is based on rigid engineering standards and a disciplined deployment approach year after year. The company’s 700 MHz spectrum gives Verizon Wireless specific advantages with 4G, including a contiguous, nationwide network license.

Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network isn’t only about major cities – the company is also working with rural communications companies to collaboratively build and operate a 4G network in those areas using the tower and backhaul assets of the rural company and Verizon Wireless’ core 4G LTE equipment and premium 700 MHz spectrum. Already, seven rural companies have signed on to leverage Verizon Wireless’ scale for infrastructure while keeping their customers on the cutting edge of technology.

While Verizon Wireless’ 3G network covers more than 290 million Americans, its 4G LTE network already reaches 110 million people and is available today in the following metropolitan areas:

MACH Gears Up To Support 3G Roll Out in India

MACH Gears Up To Support 3G Roll Out in India Hyderabad, 18th April, 2011 – In one of the company’s largest investments ever, MACH, the leading provider of hub-based mobile communication solutions, announces today that it has deployed its second global data clearing platform in Hyderabad, India. The multi-million dollar investment paves the way for mobile operators in India to leverage the full service capabilities of 3G without large CAPEX investments.

Morten Brøgger, Chief Executive Officer, MACH comments: “We are totally committed to supporting the deployment of 3G in India and helping our customers navigate the challenges, and opportunities, of increased usage and growing volumes of roaming transactions that 3G will bring. This level of investment also underpins our aim to play an active role in the country’s fast expanding telecoms industry, as well as our desire to partner and grow with India.”

“With our new platform, called MDSi, we have deployed our best-in-class proven global data clearing solution, which uses state-of-the-art technology, to bring new efficiencies to the clearing process,” Brøgger added. “MDSi will allow our operator customers to transform their service offerings as they roll-out their 3G networks. They will be able to move from a wholesale roaming business model to a retail roaming business model and pitch new service offerings tailored to their consumer and enterprise customers.”

The MDSi platform will open up new services to mobile operators that are available with 3G, such as the MACH Rerating, Retail Roaming and Data Roaming Engine Solutions (announced at Mobile World Congress 2011). These types of solutions enable operators to offer bespoke tariffs based on the usage patterns of their subscribers or on the type of device a business wishes its employees to use abroad – such as a tablet – while also offering them a greater transparency of cost.

The new MDSi platform is location agnostic and complements the company’s existing global data clearing platform in Europe. Both platforms together can process billions of Call Data Records (CDRs) from around the globe, providing more than enough capacity to cope with the increasing usage and growing volumes of roaming transactions in India stimulated by intra-circle roaming and 3G roll-out. Roaming traffic in India is currently growing at a rate of 20% each month, and the ongoing 3G roll-out is likely to accelerate this significantly.

TELUS to Deploy 4G+ Wireless LTE

TELUS to Deploy 4G+ Wireless LTE VANCOUVER, April 6, 2011 - Canadians will enjoy even faster mobile internet access speeds in early 2012 with the planned launch of TELUS' next generation, Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. LTE technology supports manufacturer's rated peak download speeds of up to 150 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of up to 70 Mbps**. This initiative is the latest technology evolution in the wireless network upgrade path made possible by the launch in 2009 of Canada's fastest* coast-to-coast HSPA+ wireless network, that today covers more than 95 per cent of the Canadian population.

Following extensive field testing in 2011 and the completion of an RFP process currently underway, construction on TELUS' next generation, 4G+ LTE network will begin in the latter half of 2011 in major urban markets across Canada. TELUS' LTE network will operate on the Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum that TELUS purchased for $882 million in Industry Canada's auction process in 2008. TELUS believes that the timing of its planned LTE launch in 2012 is appropriate and opportune given its desire to leverage the economies of scale in the manufacturing of LTE equipment, the hardening of LTE technology for market readiness, the progression in the development of LTE-capable data devices and smartphones and the need to synchronise the higher bandwidth capabilities of LTE with the accelerating appetite of clients for data rich services.

"TELUS' 4G+ LTE network build continues our strategy of technology leadership in our industry, providing our clients with some of the fastest and most expansive mobile broadband services anywhere in the world," said Darren Entwistle, president and CEO of TELUS. "The LTE upgrade means our customers can enjoy even faster speeds when they want to be entertained on-the-go, stay connected with family and friends, visit their favourite social media sites, remain engaged with business contacts wherever they are, and access healthcare applications. TELUS is committed to utilizing our wireless spectrum and the technology that it enables, to offer our clients the most innovative multimedia solutions for their lifestyle, health, professional and public service pursuits."

The launch of 4G+ over 1700/2100 MHz AWS spectrum is the first stage in the upgrade to LTE. While services offered in 2012 will begin the evolution to LTE in major urban centres, the completion of the rollout into rural Canada will be dependent on the Industry Canada auction of frequencies in the 700 MHz band. TELUS is committed to enhancing the coverage and capacity of its wireless network by building out 4G+ LTE technology extensively across rural Canada, using the 700 MHz wireless spectrum to be auctioned in 2012 to bring LTE capabilities to as many Canadians as possible. 700 MHz spectrum, in contrast to 1700/2100 MHz AWS spectrum, has superior propagation capabilities that make it effective and efficient in covering Canada's expansive rural geography. Moreover, these same capabilities improve the quality of in-building coverage in urban areas for the optimal performance of a mobile network in the physical landscape of a city setting.

"It will be critical for the Federal Government to enable an equitable opportunity for TELUS to acquire 700 MHz spectrum in the auction planned for late 2012 to support our plans to expand availability of 4G+ LTE wireless service to rural markets. TELUS is eager to play a leading role in bridging the digital divide between urban and rural Canada such that all Canadians can benefit from broadband wireless LTE technology. The demand for mobile broadband is expanding at a tremendous rate and is a fundamental enabler for business productivity and the benefits consumers experience from the availability and ongoing development of thousands of creative mobile applications. Furthermore, the rollout of wireless broadband to as many Canadians as possible will elevate Canada's connectedness, expanding the reach of critical social services including the best technology, practices and expertise in healthcare and education," said Darren Entwistle, president and CEO of TELUS.

Mr. Entwistle added "Realistically, the magnitude and expansiveness of this rural build can only come to fruition with a wireless provider of TELUS' scale, operational capabilities and geographic reach and exemplary track record of delivering successive technology platforms to Canadians throughout the country."

The investment in the 4G+ LTE urban build is consistent with TELUS' consolidated capital expenditure targets. For more information about TELUS' 4G network, please visit

* Based on TELUS' tests of data throughput speeds in large Canadian urban centres available from national HSPA+ service providers. Internet access speed provided by the network operator may vary due to the device being used, network congestion, distance from the cell site, local conditions and other factors. Speed on the Internet is beyond the wireless network operator's control and may vary with your configuration, internet traffic, website server and management policies, and other factors.

Sprint Extends Agreement Worth $1.2 Billion to Provide Wireline/Wireless Voice and Data Services to VHA, the Leading National Health Care Purchasing Network

Sprint Extends Agreement Worth $1.2 Billion to Provide Wireline/Wireless Voice and Data Services to VHA, the Leading National Health Care Purchasing Network OVERLAND PARK, Kan., April 06, 2011 - Sprint today announced that VHA, an Irving, Texas-based health care purchasing network, has agreed to a three-year contract extension with Sprint worth an estimated $1.2 billion. Sprint, a primary telecom carrier to VHA since 1997, will continue to provide wireless services – including solutions and handsets – as well as wireline and data capabilities to VHA and Provista members.

VHA and Provista serve about 1,350 not-for-profit hospitals and more than 30,000 non-acute health care organizations nationwide, employing more than 3 million people. The purchasing network works with members to identify and implement best practices to improve clinical outcomes, operational efficiency and cost savings.

“Effective communication is vital to health care institutions, and it is essential for health care professionals to have access to critical information anywhere, anytime, to better meet patient needs,” said David Gillan, vice president of Purchased Services and Sourcing Operations at Novation – the supply contractor for Provista. “Sprint has the history and documented success to instill confidence when our members work with them.”

Sprint earned the contract extension based on its consistent record of value, service and innovation, as well as its growing portfolio of converged solutions that combine wireless and wireline capabilities. Sprint has earned VHA’s Sales Growth and Member Participation Growth awards in past years.

“VHA’s confidence in Sprint speaks volumes,” said Paget Alves, president-Sprint Business. “Over the course of more than 14 years, we’ve built a solid relationship with the organization and its members based on trust and the expectation of mutual growth. We look forward to continuing to supply the best value, network and solutions to VHA in the years to come.”

The VHA contract marks another major win for Sprint among purchasing consortiums. Earlier this month, Sprint announced a similar pact with Western States Contracting Alliance, a national consortium of states that relies on Sprint for wireless products and services for its state and local government members. WSCA extended its contract worth an estimated $360 million over three years, increasing the total lifetime value of the contract to $1.4 billion.

Sprint's Business Markets Group is composed of sales, support, marketing and operations personnel solely dedicated to enterprise, small and medium-sized business and public sector customers. BMG delivers wireless, wireline and converged solutions for companies drawing on its 3G wireless network, 4G capabilities, push-to-talk network, first-tier Global IP network and a comprehensive solutions portfolio of devices and applications.
