Verizon Wireless Improves Developer Opportunities By Renewing BREW Relationship For Feature Phones

Verizon Wireless Improves Developer Opportunities By Renewing BREW Relationship For Feature Phones BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and SAN DIEGO — July 28, 2009 — As Verizon Wireless, the leading wireless company with the nation’s largest and most reliable wireless voice and data network, hosts its first-ever Verizon Developer Community applications conference in San Jose, Calif., the company announced an agreement with Qualcomm to promote growth on the BREW platform. Verizon and Qualcomm are focused on rolling out new features, including a recommendation engine, powered by Qualcomm subsidiary Xiam Technologies, that improves the discovery experience for customers, tapping into a catalog with thousands of BREW applications.

To encourage innovation and feed the consumer appetite for discovering and using new apps, Verizon intends to introduce an open catalog that simplifies certification and on-boarding processes. For developers, this means:

• Supporting free applications to encourage discovery

• Simplifying certification

• Improving the on-boarding processes, including time-to-market and transparency

Ryan Hughes, vice president, Business Development and Partner Management for Verizon, noted, “We are focused on providing tools, distribution and monetization capabilities broadly to the development community. It makes great sense as we move along this path that we encourage apps development in a variety of operating systems and programming languages. There’s a great opportunity for application developers with Verizon Wireless, whether you’re developing for the mass marketplace or business customers, feature phones or smartphones, or all of the above.”

“Qualcomm and Verizon Wireless have worked together for many years to help create a profitable path to market for the mobile developer community,” said Arvin Chander, vice president and general manager of Qualcomm Internet Services. “We are pleased that they will continue to offer new BREW services and look forward to working closely with Verizon Wireless to help drive their content strategy forward.”

Verizon Wireless’ success with Qualcomm’s BREW platform has made Verizon Wireless the market leader in mobile content revenue in the United States. Qualcomm was a pioneer in mobile content development and delivery when it launched BREW in 2001.

Verizon Wireless and Qualcomm Announce Joint Venture to Provide Advanced M2M Solutions

Verizon Wireless and Qualcomm Announce Joint Venture to Provide Advanced M2M Solutions SAN DIEGO and BASKING RIDGE, N.J. — July 28, 2009 — Qualcomm Incorporated and Verizon Wireless today announced an agreement to form a joint venture to provide machine-to-machine (M2M) wireless communications and smart services offerings across a wide variety of market segments, including healthcare, manufacturing, utilities, distribution and consumer products. Capitalizing on the growth of M2M and smart services, the joint venture (name still to be determined), which will be equally owned by Qualcomm and Verizon Wireless, will be well positioned to provide a single source for end-to-end M2M solutions.

Smart services are the new services and business models enabled by M2M capabilities. For example, smart grid technology enables utilities to wirelessly connect to their grid assets, such as circuit breakers, transformers and other sub-station equipment. This wireless monitoring capability allows them to develop interactive utility networks that are more intelligent, resilient, reliable and self-balancing.

“The Verizon Wireless vision for bringing the benefits of 'everything connected' to the marketplace started with the introduction of the open development business and the selection of LTE technology for our 4G network,” said Anthony Lewis, vice president of open development at Verizon Wireless. “We understand that no single company will be able to provide every aspect of the new M2M ecosystem on its own. This distinctive partnership with Qualcomm allows us to swiftly build on the strengths of each company's M2M strategy. The JV's focus on unlimited innovation will enable the production of next-generation products and services that will release the full power and potential of our network for customers.”

The joint venture will be led by M2M industry leader Steve Pazol, who previously served as vice president of Global Smart Services at Qualcomm. Qualcomm has provided a variety of M2M solutions that have added “always-on” mobile connectivity to assets, providing access to network intelligence and benefiting enterprise customers.

“M2M is a rapidly growing market projected by some analysts to reach more than 85 million connections globally by 2012,” Pazol said. “The next five years will be a significant period of innovation in M2M. Qualcomm and Verizon expect to create a company focused in evolving niche aftermarket strategies to embedded product standardization strategies, driving down costs, increasing performance expectations and enabling impactful new business models.”

The new joint venture will leverage Qualcomm's advanced connectivity technologies and Verizon Wireless' expertise and simplified device certification process. The joint venture will deliver seamless, fully integrated M2M communication with global connectivity. Key new capabilities will include cloud computing solutions to automate device provisioning, and to track, monitor and manage assets. Custom white label applications for OEM customers, productized applications for end-use markets, new diagnostic tools for monitoring network health and device performance, data aggregation services, back office integrations and other professional services required to deliver whole solutions also will be provided.

Other details related to the joint venture are not being disclosed.

Verizon Developer Community Is Open For Business BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and SAN JOSE, CA — July 28, 2009 — More than 500 mobile applications developers and others involved in the mobile apps marketplace gathered today in Silicon Valley for the first-ever Verizon Developer Community (VDC) Conference, where the company announced the launch of its developer portal (www.developer.verizon.com) and the upcoming launch of the V CAST Apps storefront.

Developers from companies large and small, Verizon executives and other industry leaders shared insights about building the mobile applications ecosystem and expanding the wireless applications marketplace. Discussions focused on using open network services and APIs (application programming interfaces) creatively, bringing applications to market quickly and sharing revenue. Verizon also said its new storefront, V CAST Apps, where developers can take advantage of the company’s scale and distribution, will debut before the end of this year.

Lowell McAdam, president and chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless, opened the conference by underscoring compelling reasons developers have to work with the company. McAdam said, “Verizon Wireless has a strong tradition of leadership in apps and content. But, it’s a new day and our future success is no longer going to be ours alone. Your ability to innovate and create and distribute will be the measures of how well we do, together.”

He added, “Today continues the journey that will be completed only when we join the best, most reliable network in America with the most innovative developers around the world to provide more applications than anyone else for customers.”

John Stratton, Verizon’s chief marketing officer, said the company values and relies on input from the developer community, and plans to make the process for registering and distributing applications with Verizon “simple, fast and straightforward.” Stratton noted streamlined processes designed to address developer demands for speed and transparency. He said V CAST Apps will:

• Offer a simple click-through agreement

• Provide a streamlined testing and certification process with a goal of having applications launched within 14 days of submission

• Give developers the opportunity to set their own prices for applications

• Make it easier to develop for BREW

Roger Gurnani, Verizon Wireless senior vice president for product development, said the company will encourage new apps development with a contest – Apply Your Ideas – starting next month. Developers can submit apps in a wide variety of categories, and winners will be featured in V CAST Apps after it launches. More information on the contest, including contest rules and timing, is available at www.developer.verizon.com.

Gurnani also announced Verizon Wireless’ plan to open a Silicon Valley-based Innovation Center in 2010 to support developers and give them access to a myriad of other services and resources from the company as they create innovative applications for consumers.

Sprint NFL Mobile Live Now Available on Palm Pre

Sprint NFL Mobile Live Now Available on Palm Pre OVERLAND PARK, Kan.-- Jul. 27, 2009-- Just in time for the start of training camp for NFL teams across the country, Sprint today announced that its exclusive NFL Mobile Live application is now available on the Palm® Pre™ phone.(1)

NFL Mobile Live, the only wireless source for complete, live access to NFL action, was sent to Palm Pre customers as part of an over-the-air software update from Palm. When customers accept the update to Palm webOS™ 1.1.0, NFL Mobile Live is automatically installed. Once installed, customers can use Palm Pre’s universal search to locate the application by simply typing NFL on their keyboard from the main screen or launcher, and then tapping the NFL icon to open the application.

With most NFL teams opening training camp this week, fantasy football players will begin tracking player performances. NFL Mobile Live gives them the ability to watch NFL Network live 24/7 along with a bevy of preseason on-demand video highlights, injury reports, statistics, breaking news and analysis from a host of experts. Once the regular season begins, fantasy players can manage their NFL.com fantasy teams from their phone and monitor the performance of every player in real time. Player information will be easily accessible, including real-time game and season cumulative stats, video highlights, rankings, player profiles and photos.

NFL Mobile Live is one of the most-popular applications Sprint has offered reaching 1 million downloads more quickly than any other application in the company’s history. It is available exclusively to Sprint subscribers on most handsets and is included with data plans including Sprint Everything plan with data.

“For NFL fans this is a perfect combo: NFL Mobile Live and Palm Pre, both of which are unequaled in wireless,” said Steve Gaffney, Sprint’s director of sports and entertainment marketing. “Fans with Palm Pre will experience NFL Mobile Live in a new way, with a custom user interface that will allow them to navigate through the application like never before.”

NFL Mobile Live has been revised to take advantage of Palm Pre’s clean, simple user interface that allows customers to move quickly between the application’s many features. Palm webOS allows multiple activities to be open at once so NFL fans can multitask, moving back and forth between NFL Mobile Live and other applications quickly. For example, a fan can be listening to a live game radio broadcast while completing other tasks, such as text messaging, e-mail or searching the web. With NFL Mobile Live, fans will be able to listen to the live radio broadcasts of every NFL game throughout the 2009 regular season from their phone and watch all eight NFL Network Thursday Night Football telecasts live beginning Nov. 12 when the Chicago Bears face the San Francisco 49ers.

NFL Mobile Live is available on most Sprint handsets and is included at no additional charge with Sprint Everything plans with data starting at $69.99, including Simply Everything, which combines unlimited nationwide voice, messaging and extensive data services for just $99.99 per month. With other Sprint plans available on phones other than Palm Pre, customers can get NFL Mobile Live by adding a Data Pack, starting at $15 per month.

Palm Pre comes with Sprint’s value-oriented service plans – which offer significant savings vs. the competition. For example, the Sprint Simply EverythingTM plan saves customers $1,200 over the comparable plan for AT&T’s iPhone, and more against Verizon’s smartphone and PDA pricing for a two-year period.(2)

Palm Pre delivers a breakthrough in wireless usability. This new phone has been heralded for its multitouch capabilities; easy-to-use slide-out keyboard; and the new Palm webOS platform, which offers true multitasking and Palm Synergy™, which provides linked contacts, layered calendars and combined messaging.

Palm Pre represents a major point of differentiation for Sprint, a defining wireless crossover phone for business and consumers that comes to life on the Sprint Now NetworkTM. Palm Pre proves the value of Sprint’s 3G network – America’s most dependable 3G network.(3)

Our long-term use of Nextel Direct Connect(R) has proven its value as a push-to-talk service for its sub-second instant connections. ZTE Launches Industry First LTE and EV-DO Rev.B Dual-Mode System at EXPO COMM Wireless Japan 2009

ZTE Launches Industry First LTE and EV-DO Rev.B Dual-Mode System at EXPO COMM Wireless Japan 2009 Shenzhen, China – July 22, 2009 – ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”), a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, today announced that it has launched an industry-first LTE and EV-DO Rev.B Dual-Mode System at the opening of EXPO COMM Wireless Japan 2009, the only exhibition in Japan that specializes in Wireless/Mobile network technologies, services and solutions.

During EXPO COMM, and in line with its corporate theme “Talking to the Future,” ZTE will showcase a series of innovative technologies and products, including the world’s first LTE and EV-DO Rev.B Dual-Mode System developed based on ZTE’s Software Defined Radio (SDR) soft base station platform, which has been widely adopted for commercial use in the global market. The dual-mode system demo will covera series of advanced applications, including high -speed data services such as HD streaming media, FTP download and interactive games.

ZTE’s SDR platform-based EV-DO Rev.B System can smoothly evolve to LTE by simply adding LTE baseband board and upgrading software. Through software advancement, ZTE’s EV-DO Rev.A can evolve to EV-DO Rev.B network which is backward compatible with EV-DO Rev.A users’ access.

The system demo will adopt Phase I technology: the EV-DO Rev.B’s 3-carrier bundling to realize 9.3Mbps download rate. With its flexible multi-carrier bundling technology, EV-DO Rev.B can bundle up to 15 carriers in Phase II, with a download (forward) rate of 73.5Mbps and an upload (reverse) rate of 27Mbps. Compared with HSPA+ and other technologies, it has achieved certain speed advantages.

According to industry analysis, the financial crisis has provided opportunity to the further development of EV-DO Rev.B, and it is widely recognized that year 2012 will be the best opportunity timeframe for large-scale of LTE deployment. ZTE is the pioneer in the EV-DO Rev.B and LTE areas. In May 2009, it helped WANA, a CDMA operator in Morocco, to successfully complete the world’s first EV-DO Rev.B trial on a commercial network. Currently, ZTE is also carrying out EV-DO Rev.B tests in China’s CDMA market. After ZTE’s launch of itsEV-DO Rev.B system several months ago, a number of CDMA vendors followed suit to introduce their EV-DO Rev.B systems and terminals.

Early this year, four LTE licenses were issued in the Japan market. However, it is expected that Japan will only realize large-scale LTE commercial launch by 2011 when the market will experience an explosive growth of wireless broadband services.

ZTE offers customized and advanced solutions to support operators’ long term business operations by lowering their TCO and at the same time maximizing their ROI. There are now more than 120 million EV-DO users worldwide. To date, ZTE has established 70 EV-DO networks in more than 60 countries, including China, the United States, Czech, Poland, India and Indonesia.

The company has been creating waves in the global CDMA market with global CDMA subscriber capacity reaching 240 million. ZTE ranks first in terms of global base station shipment as well as taking the number one spot in China's CDMA sector by having 42 percents of the domestic market share.

ZTE is exhibiting at booth D059, Hall E5, at the Big Sight of Tokyo, Japan.

U.S. Cellular Expands Network In Manitowoc County

U.S. Cellular Expands Network In Manitowoc County KIEL, Wis., July 15, 2009 – U.S. Cellular recently completed construction of an additional cell site in the Kiel area to improve call quality for its customers. The site will increase U.S. Cellular’s coverage in southwestern Manitowoc County, including parts of Kiel, Newton, Valders, Cleveland and St. Nazianz.

"Your cell phone is your lifeline to the people who are most important to you," said Chris Rathsack director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Wisconsin. "We’re here to keep you connected."

This new site is part of U.S. Cellular’s recently-launched 3G Mobile Broadband network in Wisconsin, which allows customers to access data on their cell phones 10 times faster than before and at no additional cost. With 3G speeds browsing the Web on a smartphone is very similar to the experience on a desktop computer. Web pages open faster and customers can send and receive large e-mail attachments. Downloads take less time and picture and video messages are delivered more quickly.

U.S. Cellular has a team of network engineers who drive all over the coverage area to test signal strength and call quality. The company also listens to customer feedback to determine the best locations for new cell sites.

"This part of Manitowoc County needed additional quality wireless service. As a result, we identified the area as a priority," added Rathsack. U.S. Cellular has led the effort to preserve federal support for rural wireless development through Connecting Rural America (www.connectingruralamerica.org), a grassroots coalition of concerned citizens, community leaders and elected officials working for equality in wireless telecommunications. Its goal is to provide rural communities with the same access to technology as their urban counterparts.

AirSage Teams Up With Verizon Wireless To Provide Real-Time Traffic Data Across The U.S.

AirSage Teams Up With Verizon Wireless To Provide Real-Time Traffic Data Across The U.S. BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and ATLANTA — July 14, 2009 — Verizon Wireless, the nation’s leading wireless provider, and AirSage, a world leader in using wireless signaling data for value added applications such as traffic information, predictive analytics and location services, have entered into an agreement where non-identifying data from Verizon Wireless’ network will be used to help AirSage provide real-time traffic information.

Signaling data from use on Verizon Wireless’ network will be made anonymous and integrated into AirSage’s patented Wireless Signal Extraction (WiSE™) Technology platform, helping AirSage solidify its position as a leader in the real-time traffic market with capabilities to enable live traffic monitoring on major interstates, highways and arterials.

The agreement will significantly enhance AirSage’s traffic coverage and accuracy by quadrupling the number of signaling messages; when the data is fully integrated, more than 12 billion signaling messages across more than 200,000 centerline miles of roadway will power applications for government agencies, businesses and consumers.

“Adding signaling data from Verizon Wireless’ network is a huge win for anyone interested in avoiding traffic and getting reliable, current and predictive travel times between multiple locations,” says Cy Smith, chief executive officer of AirSage. “Millions of people are already using our traffic and travel insights through applications such as Google Maps, Real Traffic, and our AirSage Real-Time Traffic product so we’re thrilled at the opportunity to expand our coverage and enhance our accuracy with the addition of non-identifying location information from Verizon Wireless.”

AirSage’s patented, real-time traffic data service uses the anonymous location information derived from wireless carrier data. While current applications center on real-time traffic conditions and travel times, AirSage is also building out location-enhanced services for the retail, financial and emergency management industries. All of the new services will incorporate AirSage’s core technology which allows customers to realize distinct and immediate value from the anonymous and aggregate location and movement of people.
