More Open for Developers

Instinct S30 will also be more “open” than its predecessor, with access to core Java APIs (application programming interface), including messaging, multimedia and Bluetooth, which allow developers to take advantage of the phone’s features. By providing this open access, Sprint is providing what developers have been seeking and making it possible for them to create more sophisticated and innovative new applications for customers to use on the Instinct family of phones.

Developers will have open access to the following Java APIs when creating applications on Instinct s30:

• Multimedia: recording audio, playing media files such as MP3 songs, streaming content and using the camera to take pictures • Messaging: sending and receiving messages • Bluetooth: establishing connectivity to send/receive data with peripherals • Contacts/Calendar: reading and writing to contacts/address book, and reading and writing to events • File Access: reading and writing to the internal file access on the handset

“We are excited to introduce Instinct s30 into our portfolio in a few weeks as we continue the tradition of innovative and easy-to-use touch-screen devices that will appeal to a broad array of our customers,” said Kevin Packingham, Sprint senior vice president of product and technology development. “The original device surpassed our highest expectations for both customer interest and industry accolades. The enhancements on Instinct s30 make it even more versatile for our customers, and access to core Java APIs, such as messaging and multimedia, will make it even easier for more developers to create new applications.”

Sprint plans to extend access to these Java APIs to the Instinct s30’s predecessor, Instinct, within the next few months through an over-the-air software update. The Java APIs will then be available on all future Java-enabled Sprint phones.

In providing open access to these capabilities, Sprint is creating a leading open software environment for developers to create innovative applications. Sprint’s industry-leading Application Developer Program ( further supports development in an open environment by providing an extensive set of free resources, including a kit with Instinct programming templates and device emulation, sample applications with source code, developer guides and developer forums.

The handset, which will be available in both Impulsive Pink, with a subtle floral overlay, and Deep Blue, has a tactile square designer pattern on its back.

“Mobile messaging has quickly become the de facto mode of communication for millions and, whether it’s for kids and grandparents or the seasoned texter, this phone has the ideal combination of usability, style and affordability,” said Andy Kodera, president of Kyocera SANYO Telecom, Inc. (KSTI). “Many associate messaging with teens or ‘tweens,’ but it’s become increasingly popular with all age segments. The SCP-2700 addresses a distinct need for a texting-focused QWERTY device at an entry-level price point.”

According to a recent study commissioned by Sprint, the number of texters in the 50-64 year-old range has grown by more than 50 percent since 2006, mostly driven by parents who have adopted texting to stay connected to their children. In that demographic, 75 percent of text messages are sent to the user’s children. People under 30 are four times more likely to respond within a few minutes to a text than to voicemail.**

“Although we have found an increasing number of older adults wanting to join the texting generation, one in 10 adults over age 30 say they don’t text because they’re not sure how,” said Kevin Packingham, senior vice president of product development and technology for Sprint. “SCP-2700 is the ideal transition device to ease these adults into easy messaging, as well anyone who is already using these services. With Sprint’s Everything Messaging Plan and the low cost of the device with a full QWERTY keyboard, we’ve virtually eliminated any barriers for adults looking for a simple messaging device, small businesses looking to outfit employees with an inexpensive but feature-rich phone or parents buying their child’s first wireless phone.”

SCP-2700 by SANYO offers several family-friendly applications such as Sprint Family Locator, Social Zone and Sprint Navigation. Sprint Family Locator uses GPS technology to locate your child’s phone and displays the location on an interactive map. Social Zone, allows access to Photobucket, MySpace, FaceBook, YouTube and several other social networking sites from the handset. Users can easily post mobile photos and updates from virtually anywhere, anytime for $2.99 a month. Sprint Navigation provides full-feature GPS navigation, including voice and on-screen, turn-by-turn driving directions and more than 10 million business listings.

Sprint also launched Ready Now, a revolution in the wireless retail experience, in all company-owned Sprint stores last fall. With Ready Now, Sprint has trained and committed its retail associates to work one-on-one with customers to personalize phones, set up features and demonstrate how phones work – before customers leave the store. SCP-2700 customers can work with Sprint retail associates to learn more about how they can fully leverage the strengths of their device on Sprint’s Mobile Broadband Network.

Sprint operates two high-performing wireless networks, including America’s most dependable 3G network,*** which supports easy and convenient texting for quick messages on the go, and also can provide customers blazing fast 3G speeds when accessing the mobile Web, NFL Mobile Live, email and various social networking sites – wirelessly.

Business Customers Can Ring Their Praises To Callers

Business Customers Can Ring Their Praises To Callers LAS VEGAS, NV and BASKING RIDGE, NJ — March 31, 2009 — Ringback tones, a mainstay for savvy consumers to customize their mobile phones, have made their way to business culture. From CTIA WIRELESS 2009®, Verizon Wireless, the nation’s leading wireless service provider, announced the exclusive availability of Business Ringback Tones to let organizations replace the generic ring callers hear when contacting a wireless business number with a customized message.

Business Ringback Tones provide information specific to the business and can convey information about a company’s products, services or current promotions. Verizon Wireless also provides access to seasoned advertising veterans for scriptwriting and experienced voiceover artists in professional recording studios to assist businesses in producing the customized tones. Businesses can choose to use these professional services to customize the track and reflect the unique brand of the company or provide their own professionally produced track.

“Business Ringback Tones are an inexpensive way to advertise a product or service, communicate key values, or answer frequently asked questions,” said Rob Miller, vice president of marketing for Verizon Wireless. “They can also help businesses create a polished professional image because the message is specific to the company. The tones can communicate everything from product benefits to promotions, providing customers with helpful information before their calls are even answered.”

Corporate account administrators who manage the business’ wireless service can upload and manage 30-second tones on employee phones via the online Ringback Tone Manager. They can also create a custom Jukebox that will rotate messages so callers hear different tones each time they call. In addition to five active tones, businesses can store as many Business Ringback Tones as needed for future use or in anticipation of upcoming promotional campaigns.

Businesses can also use the Ringback Tone Manager to assign tones to different sets of employees, group certain wireless numbers to have the same tones, and let employees know of changes to the tone profile through SMS messages. Corporate account administrators can also extend invitations to utilize the service by sending text messages to employees that do not have corporate-liable lines.

Pricing and Subscription Information

Business Ringback Tones are available for $1.99 per month per line. Business Ringback Tones never expire, so businesses can keep them on file in the Ringback Tones Manager.

Businesses can use professional services from I-Mobile Marketing to create their Business Ringback Tones for a one-time charge of $299.00 per tone. This fee is for the complete development of the tone, including the script, one script rewrite, two audio recording options and two rounds of audio track revisions. Background music is also included. Additional script rewrites incur a fee of $30.00 per script, and extra audio rerecording is available for $85.00 per track. Businesses may alternatively opt to upload their own completed track for a reduced, one-time charge of $50.00 per tone, if these professional services are not required.

Business Ringback Tones are currently available to businesses with 50 or more corporate lines in service that are registered with the My Business online account management tool. Subscribers must have voice mail activated on the lines.

To sign up for Business Ringback Tones, existing Verizon Wireless customers’ corporate account administrators can go online to My Business or contact their Verizon Wireless Business Sales Representative at 1-800-VZW-4BIZ.

Alcatel-Lucent Innovations Help Wireless Service Providers Integrate CDMA And LTE Services On The Same Network

Alcatel-Lucent Innovations Help Wireless Service Providers Integrate CDMA And LTE Services On The Same Network CTIA Wireless, Las Vegas, March 31, 2009 –Alcatel-Lucent has expanded its wireless networking portfolio to enable mobile service providers to offer both 3G CDMA and Long Term Evolution (LTE) services using a common network infrastructure. Alcatel-Lucent’s innovative “Converged RAN” (radio access network) offerings support the delivery of a wide variety of new wireless broadband services while simultaneously reducing power consumption – and attendant carbon footprint -- and lowering operating costs.

Alcatel-Lucent’s Converged RAN offerings build on Alcatel-Lucent’s long-standing commitment to support multiple technology standards in a common base station platform, helping ensure that investments made today will be protected in the future as networks evolve. One of the key elements of the Converged RAN is the software defined radio (SDR) technology which has been available on the current Alcatel-Lucent base stations for a number of years already. The SDR enables CDMA service providers to deploy one technology today and then upgrade smoothly to a more advanced standard, such as LTE, in the future, or even introduce both technologies in the same existing base station simultaneously.

The latest addition to Alcatel-Lucent’s Converged RAN portfolio is the Alcatel-Lucent 9238 Base Station Macro, a new platform that relies on the SDR which is integrated with the amplifiers to provide optimal power efficiency. The architecture enables CDMA and/or LTE baseband units to be mixed and matched in the same cabinet to support a variety of technology combinations. Multiple frequencies and frequency combinations will be supported in a single footprint, making the 9238 Base Station Macro an extremely flexible product that is ideally suited to help operators refresh and/or renovate their networks.

In addition to its flexibility and performance benefits, the new platform can dramatically reduce operational expenses. Through a combination of improved reliability, greatly reduced power consumption -- nearly 75 percent over earlier generations of equipment -- and use of common components to minimize the need for spares, the platform offers an array of cost benefits.

“With the newest additions to our CDMA Converged Base Station portfolio, Alcatel-Lucent has demonstrated once again our unwavering commitment to giving our customers optimum flexibility as they expand and evolve their wireless broadband service offerings,” said Sandy Motley, head of Alcatel-Lucent’s CDMA/EV-DO activities. “By providing a smooth evolution path to LTE, ensuring maximum re-use of equipment and dramatically reducing energy consumption, we also are helping our customers lower their carbon footprint while at the same time returning cash to their bottom line through reduced operating costs.”

Key elements of Alcatel-Lucent’s CDMA Converged Base Station portfolio are being demonstrated in the company’s booth #6714 at the CTIA Wireless Tradeshow and Exhibition at the Las Vegas Convention center from April 1 – April 4.

Sprint To Deliver Fans Unprecedented Live Access To NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Driver Meeting

Sprint To Deliver Fans Unprecedented Live Access To NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Driver Meeting HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Mar. 25, 2009 — Sprint today announced exclusive access to a typically private race weekend tradition, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver/crew chief meeting. It is the first time in NASCAR’s 61-year history that race fans have been invited to listen live to the pre-race meeting between NASCAR officials, drivers and crew chiefs.

This one-time opportunity will be available to fans before the 25th running of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race May 16 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The audio broadcast will be streamed exclusively on Sprint phones via NASCAR Sprint Cup MobileSM for customers away from the track and on NASCAR Sprint FanView for race fans at the track. The meeting audio will be available on NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile for repeat listening through the following week.

“The driver/crew chief meeting is one of the few areas in NASCAR still closed to the public; this is an incredibly fan-friendly sport with more access for fans than most, if not all, sports,” said Steve Gaffney, director of sports and entertainment marketing for Sprint. “The driver meeting is about as ‘inside’ as one can get, and we take a great deal of pride in using our technology and position in the sport to deliver this unique experience to NASCAR fans.”

Meeting attendance is mandatory for all drivers and crew chiefs starting the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race each week. NASCAR penalizes any driver or crew chief who misses or is late to the meeting by requiring that team to start at the rear of the field, regardless of qualifying position.

In addition to this content, Sprint customers also will be treated to SPEED’s TV broadcast of NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXV in its entirety on Sprint wireless phones via NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile.

“The NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race has long been considered a signature event for the sport, and we have partnered with SPEED to ensure fans can watch the race regardless of their location,” said Gaffney. “The latest advancements with NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile are an excellent demonstration of how the Now Network can instantly put the world of NASCAR at our subscribers’ fingertips.”

Sprint Joins With Ford To Launch Solution Suite To Increase Field Workforce Productivity And Reduce Costs

Sprint Joins With Ford To Launch Solution Suite To Increase Field Workforce Productivity And Reduce Costs OVERLAND PARK, Kan.-- Mar. 24, 2009-- Sprint today announced the details of its agreement with Ford Motor Company to provide a solution suite as a central component of “Ford Work Solutions” (

Beginning this spring, 2009 Ford F-Series and E-Series vehicles - and later in 2009, Transit Connect vehicles - will offer an in-dashboard PC with internet connectivity via the Sprint Nationwide Mobile Broadband Network. This capability provides the opportunity to leverage productivity application solutions via the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network, including real-time labor and material-cost capture, inventory updates, invoice generation and work-order edits and completion.

This new capability provides an unprecedented opportunity for job-site productivity gains and cost reductions. Work can be accomplished on site, on schedule and on budget. By minimizing the need to make trips back and forth to the office, fleets can reduce fuel consumption and their carbon footprint, and further enable the ability to “drive green.” Organizations can now perform mission-critical tasks remotely at a job site or a customer or field location, increasing operational efficiencies and guaranteeing client satisfaction. Examples include:

• Field service and construction industries can modify and confirm “change orders” to a “work order” or “job estimate,” avoiding lengthy delays and keeping the job on schedule. Additionally, with the optional Bluetooth® Printer from Ford, the customer can review and authorize the “change order” on the spot with a written confirmation.

• Engineers and project managers can review and edit graphically-rich blueprints or schematics while inside the truck.

• Sub-contractors, suppliers and customers can collaborate in real-time to review project-planning documents and website portals.

• Utilities and oil and gas crews in the field gain real-time, high bandwidth access to work orders, safety and compliance data and asset management.

Ford and Sprint will soon announce exclusive offers for this solution suite. In support of the co-marketing efforts around this capability, they will also appear at several events in the months ahead, including key industry trade shows, to further inform their customers.

“This joint collaboration between Ford and Sprint delivers unprecedented freedom to field work forces,” said Ed Pleet, Ford Work Solutions product and business development manager. “Now organizations' desktop business applications and systems can be brought where and when they are most needed – at the ‘front end’ of the cabs of F-Series and E-Series vehicles while they are on site.”

“This solution suite will empower organizations to continue to work hard while also working smart,” said Keith Dardis, regional vice president, Sprint. “We will provide our mutual customers with a competitive edge, unparalleled productivity and cost savings, and the opportunity to do their part to ‘drive green.’”

Both Ford and Sprint have a history of innovation. Ford Motor Company has developed and maintained a Field Work Force industry-leading position for over 30 years around their “Built Ford Tough” line of F-Series pick-up trucks and E-Series cargo vans.

Through its unmatched Direct Connect push-to-talk service, rugged devices and other technology, Sprint has developed and maintained its leadership in Field Work Force solutions by understanding that effective Field Work Force management requires constant coordination of crews, fleets, suppliers, project managers, engineers and field service teams -- often in harsh conditions and always on tight timelines.

Reliance Communication Launches 'Netconnect Broadband Plus' - India's Fastest Wireless Internet Service Mumbai, March 12, 2009: Reliance Communications Limited today announced the roll-out of its CDMA wireless broadband service, Reliance Netconnect Broadband Plus. India's fastest Internet service, Netconnect Broadband Plus has a downlink speed of up to 3.1 Mbps and a separate uplink speed of upto 1.8 Mbps, offering 30% higher downlink rate in comparison to any other wireless broadband offering. This makes Netconnect Broadband Plus best suited for video streaming, video surveillance, rich media content &superior Internet browsing.

As part of this launch, Reliance is embarking on the largest and most aggressive roll-out of a broadband internet service in India. Netconnect Broadband Plus service will be available in 35 cities with seamless handover to high speed 1x service covering 20,000 towns and 4.5 lakh villages as well as all major road and rail routes across the country covering 99% of India's Internet population. The company will retail Netconnect Broadband Plus in 12,000 IT retail outlets across India as well as 2,300 exclusive Reliance Communication retail stores and nearly 240 Reliance World outlets.

Announcing the launch in Mumbai, Mr Mahesh Prasad, President, Reliance Communications said, "The launch of Netconnect Broadband Plus is an important milestone for Reliance and will act as a catalyst in the government's effort to drive broadband penetration in India. Reliance Netconnect Broadband Plus will be the inflection point for the Indian Internet industry and would enable broadband access to millions of online Indians."

India is amongst the lowest broadband penetrated countries in the world (0.5% in India versus 21.9% in US, 27.4% in Korea and 3.7% in China). India's poor broadband penetration can be attributed to the limitations of wireline Internet like last mile connectivity, right of way issues, poor quality of copper, time taken to deploy the network and reach customer premises. Reliance Netconnect Broadband Plus will significantly enhance the broadband coverage in India and make broadband Internet available to customers in many areas and localities who have been waiting for years to be broadband enabled. Easy availability and instant activation of Netconnect Broadband Plus would be a welcome change for the netizens who wait for weeks or months before they get connected to broadband.

Reliance Netconnect Broadband Plus will be available in the retail outlets from March 17, 2009 onwards. The product is launched in two Plug and Play USB device variants. Netconnect Broadband Plus is targeting two major segments:

a) About 6 million Road Warriors who need Internet access on the move through their laptop

b) About 8 million Home PC users who access entertainment and educational content.

The wireless broadband service will ride on Reliance Communication's extensive pan-India, next generation, integrated, convergent digital network spanning over 175,000 kilometers of fibre optic cable systems. This network is capable of supporting best-of-class services spanning the entire communications value chain.

It is estimated that out of the total 13 million Internet subscribers in the country, the current broadband penetration in India stands merely at 6.5 million. Reliance's wireless broadband service is expected to accelerate the broadband penetration in India. Reliance is adopting an aggressive pricing strategy to enhance the market penetration of its wireless broadband service. The company is launching the product starting at a monthly subscription charge of Rs 299 offering complete freedom to pay on use basis. The company will also offer an Unlimited Night plan at Rs 499 per month. Reliance Communications is targeting a potential 15 million users (includes 6 million laptop users, 1 million 1X CDMA Datacard users and 8 million home PC users) across India for its wireless broadband service.

Verizon Wireless And Ambient Corporation Join Forces To Offer Utilities Smart Grid Communications Solution

Verizon Wireless And Ambient Corporation Join Forces To Offer Utilities Smart Grid Communications Solution BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and BOSTON, MA — March 4, 2009 — Verizon Wireless and Ambient Corporation today announced a joint marketing agreement intended to facilitate the deployment of a host of smart grid projects around the country. The projects will allow utilities to transmit data from both residential and commercial meters over the nation’s most reliable network to the utility companies’ in-house systems.

Significant to the utility industry’s move to the more efficient open standards-based technologies necessary for smart grid applications is access to a robust communications platform. According to Mark Bartolomeo, vice president enterprise data sales for Verizon Wireless, the company’s Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) 3G network provides a secure, high-speed path for carrying data today and as the demand increases in the future.

“We’ve seen significant interest and growth in the utility sector for smart technologies,” Bartolomeo added. “This joint marketing agreement helps us provide utility customers with a solution designed to aid them in planning for long-term growth and profitability. This comprehensive platform holds great promise for extending smart grid applications nationwide.”

Ambient’s X-3000 node, running on Verizon Wireless’ network, provides the communications platform that enables data from residential and commercial smart meters, appliances and other applications to be transported via IP-based technologies over a utility’s smart grid system. This platform allows for two-way efficient collection, analysis and management of energy data to promote more reliable, affordable and environmentally friendly operations.

“As the demand for smart grid applications and bandwidth expands and becomes part of the nation’s energy infrastructure, having the opportunity to offer a solution that allows for such growth in demand should significantly enhance the utilities’ ability to more efficiently serve their customers and reduce their carbon footprint,” said John J. Joyce, president and chief executive officer of Ambient Corporation.

The Verizon Wireless network provides Ambient’s X-3000 with a ubiquitous, reliable and secure data communications backhaul for the Ambient Smart Grid™ platform, which is designed to support such services as advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), energy management, real-time pricing, demand side management (DSM) / direct load control, and system monitoring.

In January, the X-3000 was certified to run on the Verizon Wireless network through its open development program. Verizon Wireless’ open development program is driven by the company’s desire to encourage innovation, give businesses new wireless choices, and quickly address opportunities to expand the wireless market.

In each of the last four years, Verizon Wireless invested $6.5 billion or more to expand and advance its network.

Along with a game-ready network, Verizon Wireless offers wireless services that cover a lot of bases for baseball fans on the go:

• VZ Navigator(SM) – Customers can navigate spring training locations with VZ Navigator, an assisted GPS application that transforms a customer’s wireless handset into a powerful navigation device. VZ Navigator gives customers audible directions, helps locate nearby places, like hotels and restaurants, and provides maps of locations.

• ESPN MVP – With ESPN MVP, baseball fans can follow what is happening throughout the league all season with video highlights; alerts for scoring updates; and breaking news on players, teams and leagues – right on their V CAST phones.

• Mobile Web – Mobile Web gives Verizon Wireless customers access to news, tools and information from the nation’s top content providers. The simple, intuitive format makes it easy to access content from many categories, including News, Sports, Weather, Entertainment, Business, Email and more, allowing them to stay on top of e-mail and news while cheering for their favorite teams.
