Instinct s30 offers a Speech to Action button, which provides many functions using voice activation including call, text, picture messaging, traffic, movie, sports, news and search. Speech to Action brings the user seamless integration with Sprint Navigation, powered by Telenav, with GPS-enabled audio and visual turn-by-turn driving directions, one-click traffic rerouting and more than 10 million local listings.

More Open for Developers

Instinct S30 will also be more “open” than its predecessor, with access to core Java APIs (application programming interface), including messaging, multimedia and Bluetooth, which allow developers to take advantage of the phone’s features. By providing this open access, Sprint is providing what developers have been seeking and making it possible for them to create more sophisticated and innovative new applications for customers to use on the Instinct family of phones.

Developers will have open access to the following Java APIs when creating applications on Instinct s30:

• Multimedia: recording audio, playing media files such as MP3 songs, streaming content and using the camera to take pictures • Messaging: sending and receiving messages • Bluetooth: establishing connectivity to send/receive data with peripherals • Contacts/Calendar: reading and writing to contacts/address book, and reading and writing to events • File Access: reading and writing to the internal file access on the handset

Sprint plans to extend access to these Java APIs to the Instinct s30’s predecessor, Instinct, within the next few months through an over-the-air software update. The Java APIs will then be available on all future Java-enabled Sprint phones.

In providing open access to these capabilities, Sprint is creating a leading open software environment for developers to create innovative applications. Sprint’s industry-leading Application Developer Program (http://developer.sprint.com/instinct) further supports development in an open environment by providing an extensive set of free resources, including a kit with Instinct programming templates and device emulation, sample applications with source code, developer guides and developer forums.

The most popular rate plan for Instinct users, Sprint’s Simply EverythingSM plan, provides unlimited nationwide calling, texting, email, Web browsing, GPS navigation and much more for only $99.99 per month. Comparable yearly messaging and data plans on Verizon and AT&T cost the consumer an additional $475**. From CTIA WIRELESS 2009®, Verizon Wireless, the nation’s leading wireless service provider, announced the exclusive availability of Business Ringback Tones to let organizations replace the generic ring callers hear when contacting a wireless business number with a customized message.

Business Ringback Tones provide information specific to the business and can convey information about a company’s products, services or current promotions. Verizon Wireless also provides access to seasoned advertising veterans for scriptwriting and experienced voiceover artists in professional recording studios to assist businesses in producing the customized tones. Businesses can choose to use these professional services to customize the track and reflect the unique brand of the company or provide their own professionally produced track.

Alcatel-Lucent Innovations Help Wireless Service Providers Integrate CDMA And LTE Services On The Same Network CTIA Wireless, Las Vegas, March 31, 2009 –Alcatel-Lucent has expanded its wireless networking portfolio to enable mobile service providers to offer both 3G CDMA and Long Term Evolution (LTE) services using a common network infrastructure. Alcatel-Lucent’s innovative “Converged RAN” (radio access network) offerings support the delivery of a wide variety of new wireless broadband services while simultaneously reducing power consumption – and attendant carbon footprint -- and lowering operating costs.

Alcatel-Lucent’s Converged RAN offerings build on Alcatel-Lucent’s long-standing commitment to support multiple technology standards in a common base station platform, helping ensure that investments made today will be protected in the future as networks evolve. One of the key elements of the Converged RAN is the software defined radio (SDR) technology which has been available on the current Alcatel-Lucent base stations for a number of years already. The SDR enables CDMA service providers to deploy one technology today and then upgrade smoothly to a more advanced standard, such as LTE, in the future, or even introduce both technologies in the same existing base station simultaneously.

Multiple frequencies and frequency combinations will be supported in a single footprint, making the 9238 Base Station Macro an extremely flexible product that is ideally suited to help operators refresh and/or renovate their networks.

Through a combination of improved reliability, greatly reduced power consumption -- nearly 75 percent over earlier generations of equipment -- and use of common components to minimize the need for spares, the platform offers an array of cost benefits.

Verizon Wireless And Ambient Corporation Join Forces To Offer Utilities Smart Grid Communications Solution BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and BOSTON, MA — March 4, 2009 — Verizon Wireless and Ambient Corporation today announced a joint marketing agreement intended to facilitate the deployment of a host of smart grid projects around the country. The projects will allow utilities to transmit data from both residential and commercial meters over the nation’s most reliable network to the utility companies’ in-house systems.

Significant to the utility industry’s move to the more efficient open standards-based technologies necessary for smart grid applications is access to a robust communications platform. Cricket Launches A600 USB Broadband Modem SAN DIEGO--Mar. 3, 2009-- Cricket Communications, Inc, a leading provider of unlimited wireless services and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Leap Wireless International, Inc., today announced that the Cricket A600 USB modem is now available to customers. The AWS compatible A600 features a rotatable USB hinge for ease of use with any laptop or desktop computer with a USB port.
