Sprint Customers Expected to Ring Up and Text Friends and Family to Say ""Happy New Year!""

Sprint Customers Expected to Ring Up and Text Friends and Family to Say "Happy New Year!" OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--Dec. 30, 2008--Say "Happy New Year" wirelessly. That is exactly what Sprint is expecting its customers will do, based on historical network trends. Sprint's network team has taken steps to bolster its wireless networks so that everyone who intends to use their Sprint devices to send "New Year's" cheer can have a great experience when making those important connections with friends and family.

"New Year's is one of the highest 'text messaging' days of the year," said Bob Azzi, senior vice president of network services for Sprint. "We anticipate traffic volumes this New Year's to be about 200 percent, double the normal rate. Every year, we enhance our networks in areas like New York's Times Square, Las Vegas and in other cities across the nation where our customers may be celebrating."

How do you plan to ring in the New Year wirelessly?

Sprint subscribers can indicate how they prefer to ring in the New Year wirelessly by texting their vote to 22331.

A) Sending a text message

B) Sending a picture message

C) Calling loved ones

D) Sending a video message showing how much fun you're having ringing in the New Year

E) Using Nextel Direct Connect(R), the industry's leading push-to-talk service, to communicate instantly with family, friends, and co-workers

F) Using Sprint 3G or 4G mobile broadband service to access your social network as the clock counts down to the New Year

* There is no charge to participate in the poll. Poll results are expected to be posted on Buzzaboutwireless.com the week of Jan. 5. Participants in the poll will receive the results via free text message.

Network Investment

Since 2006, Sprint has invested more than $15 billion in capital largely to enhance its networks. Across the country, thousands of cities received the benefit of this major investment. Sprint's wireless networks are performing at their best-ever levels, and independent third-party reports confirm Sprint's networks are performing very well relative to the competition's.

"Holidays and large-scale events do put additional load on wireless networks, so preparation is critical to ensure high-performing networks, when demand is at its highest," said Azzi. "Sprint's experience includes preparing for holidays; sponsorship events, such as NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races and the Super Bowl; network preparations before, during and after natural disasters; and political conventions and events, including the upcoming presidential inauguration. Every event provides an opportunity for us to put our experience into action for our customers, so that they have a great experience when using their Sprint devices and services."

In addition to operating two wireless networks, Sprint operates America's largest, most dependable 3G network*, providing customers access to the mobile Web, e-mail and various social networking sites - wirelessly and on the go. Gizmodo, a well-respected technology blog with more than 80 million page views a month in traffic, recently announced that consistent testing of Sprint's 3G network in eight cities selected by the blog showed Sprint unequivocally beating both AT&T and Verizon in download performance speeds.

Current and prospective customers can view coverage maps using the Sprint Coverage Tool, which is available at www.sprint.com/coverage and at self-service, touch-screen kiosks at many Sprint retail stores.

Nortel Teams with American Samoa Telecommunications Authority to Bring 3G Mobile Broadband to Island Residents

Nortel Teams with American Samoa Telecommunications Authority to Bring 3G Mobile Broadband to Island Residents AMERICAN SAMOA – December 17, 2008 – Whether customers of American Samoa Telecommunications Authority ** (ASTCA) are fishing off the coast of Tutu'ila or working in the office in Pago Pago, they now have access to ultra-fast mobile broadband thanks to a network expansion with a Nortel* CDMA solution. Now, more than 80 percent of households subscribing to services provided by ASTCA have access to affordable, ubiquitous coverage, available across the five main islands of American Samoa, including some of the most remote and challenging areas.

ASTCA is using Nortel's 3G CDMA 1xEV-DO Rev A solution to provide customers with a wireline-quality Internet experience from laptops or any PDA device, anywhere on the island. The network, which spans Tutu'ila, Aunu'u and the three Manu'a islands, allows mobile users to access real-time applications and content at affordable rates because of the highly efficient network performance and low total cost of ownership of Nortel's solution. As a result, ASTCA can support the explosion in user demand for new multimedia services being driven by Hyperconnectivity - a global trend where anything that can be connected, will be connected. Now, users in all corners of the American Samoa islands have access to ultra-fast mobile broadband at work, home or on the move.

"The real advantage of deploying Nortel's CDMA 1xEV-DO solution was that it was simple, requiring a minimal addition to our existing network," Alex Sene, deputy director, ASTCA Engineering. "We were quickly able to provide customers with ultra-fast 3G wireless broadband across the islands. Whether they're hiking in a remote area or working from their home or office, our customers have high-speed access that Nortel's EV-DO solution can provide. The solution allows us to accommodate increased subscriber and traffic growth on our network and most importantly, it allows us to effectively meet our customer demands for high-speed data rates in mobile, portable and fixed environments."

"From basic communications to streaming video entertainment, Nortel's 1xEV-DO solution enables a wireless lifestyle that allows users the freedom and flexibility to have their world at their fingertips," said Danny Locklear, vice president, Carrier Networks Marketing, Nortel. "With this solution, ASTCA can offer bandwidth-hungry applications like music downloads or video streaming at lower costs while providing users with the same experience as subscribers enjoy today in some of the most advanced markets in the world. With Nortel's 1xEV-DO solution, customers can use high-speed data services in the same way they use mobile voice services today. Nortel's 1xEV-DO solution takes the desktop Internet experience and extends it to all wireless devices - which is extremely important across the rugged terrain and remote location of the American Samoa islands."

The solution includes Nortel's industry leading Radio Network Controller and Base Stations that are designed and built with unique innovations in power amplifiers and transceivers. This technology provides significant reductions in power consumption while reducing carbon emissions, creating a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly network. In addition to the 1xEV-DO Rev A capabilities, ASTCA's existing network was also expanded with features that increase network bandwidth and improve network efficiency for lower operational costs.

As a driving force behind CDMA to LTE evolution, Nortel is well positioned to help CDMA operators easily evolve to 4G. As a leader in wireless solutions, Nortel is driving standards and delivering innovative solutions to service providers to ensure a standards-based and cost-effective path to 4G while growing the existing networks with maximum return on investments.

Smart PCS Chooses ZTE USA's CDMA Handsets, Data Cards And Infrastructure

Smart PCS Chooses ZTE USA''s CDMA Handsets, Data Cards And Infrastructure Dallas, TX – December 17, 2008 - ZTE USA, Inc., a subsidiary of ZTE Corporation, a leading global telecommunications equipment and network solutions provider, today announced that Smart PCS, an unlimited no contract pre-paid carrier, selected ZTE USA as the key CDMA infrastructure and device vendor partner to support its initial service launch. ZTE USA’s mobile softswitching equipment and All-IP CDMA2000 1xEV-DO base stations are being used to construct the networks in the initial markets the carrier will serve, which include northwest Georgia and Tennessee, as well as future markets to which the carrier will expand. Smart PCS also chose ZTE USA’s data cards and high quality, feature-rich handsets to offer its new subscribers.

“As a new carrier launching its service for the first time, we needed a vendor partner that would offer us mature, state-of-the-art equipment and devices, but at an affordable price point,” said Anthony E. Ortolani, President and CEO of Smart PCS. “We found ZTE USA to be the only vendor to offer us all this, in addition to the most attentive customer service we came across. On top of all this, ZTE USA’s CDMA network equipment has the scalability to support ongoing subscriber base growth as well as future technology upgrades and new market expansion.”

Smart PCS was able to design an efficient lay-out of the All-IP CDMA2000 1xEV-DO base stations to maximize its investment, while also ensuring efficient power-consumption. Additionally, because the equipment is based on All-IP technology, Smart PCS can easily upgrade to a next-generation network.

In addition to the CDMA infrastructure, Smart PCS selected ZTE USA’s data cards and handsets. The first handset to be offered to subscribers is the ZTE C88, a sleek flip-phone offering many features at an affordable price point, including a camera, Bluetooth support, Internet browsing and picture messaging.

“Although we are a major global manufacturer, we also understand the unique needs of new carriers who are launching their services for the first time. Finding a vendor partner that wouldn’t require them to sacrifice on technology innovation, quality, service or price is critical for new market entrants,” said Dr. George Sun, CEO of ZTE USA. “We are delighted that Smart PCS chose us to play an instrumental role in the foundation of its business. We are looking forward to a long relationship with Smart PCS as they set themselves up for initial success, while paving the road to future growth and expansion.”

Motorola will provide CDMA radio access infrastructure for 42 cities in nine provinces across the country. With the CDMA network upgrade project, Motorola will provide China Telecom with the latest versions of its CDMA2000 1X and next-generation CDMA equipment at thousands of cell sites. “China is a major market for Motorola. It is increasingly important that telecom solution providers are able to offer a full range of end-to-end solutions to meet the growing demand for telecom service convergence in China. With an unmatched solution portfolio to deliver broadband everywhere, Motorola is well positioned to support operators to deliver high speed voice, data and Internet services at home and on the go.

Motorola launched the first CDMA network in 1995 and continues to be a world-leading supplier of CDMA 1X and EV-DO Revision A solutions to tier one operators in the United States, Japan, and China and with operators in other countries around the world. Motorola’s CDMA portfolio supports legacy systems as well as 3G technologies including EV-DO Rev. A and includes innovative solutions such as highly scalable EV-DO Base Site Controller (BSC) platform and Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) solution.

Motorola continues to advance its wireless networks to support 4G systems and was the first vendor to announce a successful packet-switched network handoff between CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Long Term Evolution (LTE) technologies in a demonstration with VoIP calls and streaming video at CTIA 2008. Motorola’s comprehensive and competitive portfolio of CDMA end-to-end solutions enables service providers to realize new revenue and cost saving opportunities.
