Tata Indicom Announces Plans To Deploy First A-GPS Location-Based Service In India

Tata Indicom Announces Plans To Deploy First A-GPS Location-Based Service In India SAN DIEGO - May 29, 2008 - Tata Teleservices, India's fastest-growing telecom service provider, today announced that it will commercially deploy a new location-based service that is the first to use Qualcomm's Assisted GPS (A-GPS) technology in the Indian market. The service leverages Qualcomm's QPoint™ solution and gpsOne® chipset technology, with hosting services from leading wireless communications provider TeleCommunication Systems (TCS). The service is expected to be available on multiple handsets from Tata's catalog and deployment is expected in late 2008.

A-GPS technology will provide Tata with a differentiated LBS service, as it improves on previously deployed cellular LBS services in India in terms of both performance and reliability. Conventional Cell-ID-based solutions rely solely on base stations for positioning, which can equate to less than optimal functionality in areas where cellular signals are compromised. Tata's A-GPS service leverages triangulation with cellular base stations and satellite-based GPS for precise position location in both rural and urban environments, including inside buildings and structures.

"Tata's dedication to providing its customers with advanced, rich wireless services was initially evident in our implementation of CDMA technology and now can be seen with our deployment of LBS applications based on A-GPS, which provides advanced and reliable wireless navigation technologies for enriched services," said Pankaj Sethi, president of value added services and enterprise marketing, Tata Teleservices. "With Qualcomm and TeleCommunication Systems' technology and services, Tata customers will benefit from a greatly improved LBS experience on their handsets."

Tata's service will leverage Qualcomm's QPoint and gpsOne solutions, which together deliver a complete, integrated mass-market solution for enriched location-based services. Using these technologies to leverage the capabilities of A-GPS allows developers to easily create precise, reliable and compelling location-based applications. Tata plans on working with the local developer community to create both consumer and enterprise LBS applications. Consumer navigation will include friend finder and social networking applications, while enterprise customers will benefit from asset and fleet tracking applications.

"With this announcement, Tata has once again proven to be a global leader by providing advanced LBS services based on A-GPS," said Arvin Chander, vice president of global carrier relations for Qualcomm Internet Services. "Tata is working with a strong community of content providers who understand the market and have the tools to create a range of precision LBS applications."

TCS provides proven precise location technology for in-network deployments or via world-class hosting solutions. For Tata, TCS will be hosting its Xypoint Location Platform that includes a Position Determination Entity built upon the aforementioned QPoint technology from Qualcomm.

"Adding to our commercially proven location deployments in Asia and worldwide, TCS' solution for Tata underscores our strategic commitment to the Asia-Pacific market," said Joe Hannan, vice president of location products for TCS. "We are proud to be an integral partner with Tata in offering differentiated services to the dynamically expanding market of India."

Tata Teleservices is one of India's leading private telecom service providers. The company offers integrated telecom solutions to its customers under the Tata Indicom brand, and uses the latest CDMA 3G 1X technology for its wireless network. Tata Teleservices along with Tata Teleservices (Maharastra) Limited, operates in more than 5,000 towns across 19 circles i.e. Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, New Delhi, Maharashtra, Mumbai, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (E), Uttar Pradesh (W), Kolkata, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal. Neotel Redefines Telecoms Landscape Through Consumer Offering

Neotel Redefines Telecoms Landscape Through Consumer Offering 22 May 2008

Neotel has officially announced the launch of their consumer offerings, NeoConnect, bringing unprecedented value through a variety of product packages aimed at meeting every requirement.

“For years South African consumers have been calling for services that meet their requirements and we believe that we are now making that a reality,” says Ajay Pandey, MD and CEO of Neotel. “The NeoConnect service has been custom designed for Neotel in order to address consumers’ latent and expressed needs.” Regular testing and focus group discussions have allowed Neotel to continuously refine the service to what it is today – giving consumers in South Africa everything they need and more.”

NeoConnect Prime is the converged high speed internet offering with 2.4 Mbps peak speeds and average speeds of 300-700kbps, coupled with voice and SMS. There are 5 different package options available ranging from an entry level offering of 2.5GB data service all the way up to an unlimited internet access offering. The availability of 2.5GB data capacity at an entry level is a significant shift in the telecoms market in South Africa, since consumers thus far have been used to smaller data capacities. The pricing for the NeoConnect Prime bundles range from R399 per month for the 2.5GB offering to R999 for the unlimited internet access package. Neotel is also making available to the market NeoConnect Lite, a basic speed internet access offering with voice and sms.

According to Pandey there were two critical areas that Neotel wanted to address when entering the market the low data caps that were currently prevalent and convenience in obtaining and using the services. “Obtaining the product is simple and easy and data caps that were formerly perceived as high-end bundles are similar to those which Neotel is introducing as its mid-range offering,” says Pandey.

While the rollout of services is being done in a phased approach, Pandey believes it is time to let the market know what is coming. “Our first phase of rollout is in Johannesburg, Pretoria and parts of Ekhuruleni,” he says. “We are however expanding our network at a rapid pace and will be able to roll out services in Cape Town and Durban, shortly.” The objective is to aggressively continue growing the network to allow more customers to experience the Neotel offering.

According to Brian Neilson from BMI-Tecknowledge research has shown that at least 50% of consumers are looking for an alternative to the incumbent for a variety of reasons. “Some people are looking for simplicity, others want freedom of choice and want to experience best of breed services,” he says. “South Africans are looking for something that is well tried and tested globally that will add value in their lives rather than complexity.”

“The NeoConnect offering we are introducing to the market brings the best of mobile and fixed communications together in a product that allows for high-speed internet, carrier-grade voice calls and SMS through one product,” says Mukul Sharma, Executive Head of Neotel’s Consumer Business Unit. “We have incorporated global best practices into the design of this product, ensuring that while it remains relevant to the market, it is based on a first-in-world device – a unique solution that addresses the key pain points South African users have been highlighting for years.” The NeoConnect product is built on CDMA technology – a telecommunications technology which is growing rapidly in popularity across the African continent.

“We believe we are providing unprecedented value to the consumer by giving customers one service for multiple uses – with the convenience of one bill,” he says. The NeoConnect range is specifically targeted at meeting consumer needs – both current and potential future needs. “We believe that this is going to change the way in which consumers communicate significantly – we have listened to what the consumers wanted and provided them that and more,” he says. “This is only the beginning though – we know that the South African consumer wants true broadband and that is precisely where we are heading,” Sharma concludes.

NeoConnect Prime can be obtained via the Neotel call centre (0800 333 636), via www.neotel.co.za and through select channel partners.

Leap Introduces Its Cricket Unlimited Wireless Service In Las Vegas, Nev.

Leap Introduces Its Cricket Unlimited Wireless Service In Las Vegas, Nev. SAN DIEGO--May 12, 2008--Leap Wireless International, Inc., the parent company of Cricket Communications, Inc, a leading provider of unlimited wireless services, will begin offering its Cricket services in Las Vegas, Nev. and surrounding communities beginning tomorrow. This is the third of Cricket's markets to operate on the Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum band, and includes approximately 2 million new covered POPs, bringing Cricket's national covered POPs to approximately 59 million.

The Cricket Las Vegas core network covers approximately 1,500 square miles. In addition, Cricket has formed relationships with three strategic roaming partners that together will provide customers with coverage across approximately 41,000 square miles in the Las Vegas area at no additional charge. The total coverage area stretches northward to beyond Winnemucca and southward to Lake Havasu City, Arizona and east to St. George, Utah, making it the largest local wireless footprint offered by an unlimited wireless service provider in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas introduction is the company's third AWS market launch in six weeks encompassing a total of 5.4 million covered POPs. Other AWS markets launched since April 8, 2008 include Oklahoma City and the South Texas markets of McAllen, Beaumont, Corpus Christi, Brownsville and Laredo.

"Together with our partners, our large, robust Las Vegas network achieves our goal to of launching new markets with both quality and broad coverage," said Doug Hutcheson, president and chief executive officer of Leap. "Since Las Vegas-area residents tend to live, work and play in the surrounding communities of North Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City and Laughlin, we believe it is important to come to the market with a retail footprint and network that cover these areas and not just the heart of Las Vegas. We are pleased to be launching with more than 100 distribution points, a variety of AWS wireless phones and a high-speed wireless broadband modem that we believe will appeal to a wide range of customers. Launching in Las Vegas is another step in our plan to double the size of our business in the next two years."

Beginning tomorrow, Cricket service will be available in the Las Vegas area at eight Cricket retail stores and approximately 100 authorized dealers where customers will be able to choose from a wide variety of rate plans, ranging from $30 to $60 a month and including an assortment of features from unlimited anytime minutes, unlimited U.S. long distance, unlimited text and picture messaging, unlimited text to Mexico, unlimited Mobile Web, unlimited directory assistance and nationwide roaming minutes.

Las Vegas customers will also be able to experience unlimited high-speed mobile broadband with Cricket Wireless Internet Service for one low, flat rate with no long-term commitments or credit checks - the same principles that Cricket was founded on in 1998. Cricket Wireless Internet Service is available for $40 a month for unlimited usage, and customers who also have Cricket mobile phone service receive a $5 discount to pay just $35 monthly.
