Tata Teleservices Takes the Lead in Data Services Enabled by Qualcomm’s BREW Platform and Single Chip Solution

Tata Teleservices Takes the Lead in Data Services Enabled by Qualcomm’s BREW Platform and Single Chip Solution MUMBAI, India — November 29, 2007 — Tata Teleservices (TTSL), one of India’s leading telecom service providers, and Qualcomm Incorporated, a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies and data solutions, today jointly announced the success of rich data services based on Qualcomm’s BREW® solution. Tata Indicom subscribers enjoy a range of innovative and differentiated data services beyond just SMS, ringtones and wallpaper. Data services now permeate even low-end devices because of the Qualcomm Single Chip™ (QSC™) solution and availability of BREW® in Hindi. According to TTSL, these developments have led to the company reaching 30 million downloads of BREW content and applications in 2007. With this new milestone, TTSL attributes 80 percent of its value-added services revenue to non-SMS services and takes a step closer to solidifying its position as a high ARPU carrier in India.

Devices launched on Qualcomm’s QSC solution with full BREW capability have revolutionized the mobile data experience for Indian consumers. TTSL subscribers have the unique advantage of enjoying rich data services such as gaming, prayer applications and local language news on a range of affordable devices. Innovative devices, such as the Samsung Explore and Huawei 2900i, which are based on Qualcomm’s QSC6020™ chip, offer an unparalleled Internet browsing experience at attractive price points.

Launched in March 2005, the highly popular BREW services have grown rapidly with more than one million users accessing BREW services every month and the overall user base tripling in the last year alone. Today, Tata Zone, the value-added services portal for Tata Indicom, offers more than 500 BREW data applications that are available on a wide variety of handsets from leading OEMs such as Samsung, Motorola, LG, Huawei and Kyocera. Popular applications such as ringtones, wallpapers, games and email have been pre-installed on affordable devices to enable easy discovery. TTSL also has launched BREW in Hindi, which is expected to enhance the BREW uptake in non-urban areas and augment revenues from traditionally low ARPU locations.

Commenting on this significant milestone, Pankaj Sethi, president, value-added services, Tata Teleservices Limited, said, “Qualcomm’s BREW platform has helped us bring innovative and differentiated data offerings to our subscribers and grow our ARPU from value-added services to 9.4 percent. Innovations like the Qualcomm Single Chip have enabled us to extend compelling data services on low-end devices. Leveraging BREW and CDMA is helping us open up entertainment and information to mass customers through enriched services and fast downloads. We will continue to work with Qualcomm in our endeavor to provide a richer and more complete experience for data services on CDMA2000 to our subscribers.”

“We are very pleased to see TTSL’s pioneering efforts in leveraging BREW lead to such widespread success for its data service offerings,” said Kanwalinder Singh, president, Qualcomm India and SAARC. “By focusing on innovation and differentiation, TTSL has established itself as a leading operator worldwide in terms of BREW downloads. We are committed to our ongoing relationship with TTSL to bring an enriched data experience to Indian consumers.”

“Through Qualcomm’s long-standing relationship with TTSL, they have succeeded in offering exciting and innovative data services that address the varying needs and preferences of Indian consumers,” said Arvin Chander, vice president, global carrier relations, Qualcomm Internet Services. “TTSL’s data services milestones exemplify the tremendous potential that BREW offers to wireless operators in enhancing their data revenues.”

BREW solutions change the way people relate to wireless data services. By enabling the discovery and delivery of high-value content, BREW creates opportunities for the wireless industry to enhance consumers’ mobile data experience. Qualcomm’s comprehensive and targeted BREW Signature Solutions offer reduced time to market and lower capital investment for companies providing mobile products and services. Customers also can benefit from several modular BREW offerings, including uiOne™, deliveryOne™ and QPoint™, which provide the foundation for customer-differentiated wireless data capabilities.

Airvana Announces Innovations In EV-DO Technology

Airvana Announces Innovations In EV-DO Technology Chelmsford, MA, November 28, 2007 — Airvana, Inc., a leading provider of mobile broadband infrastructure products, today announced availability of the company’s latest EV-DO technology, which will allow operators to accelerate the roll-out of next-generation services such as IP-based push-to-talk. Further, with the availability of Airvana’s pioneering radio network controller (RNC) clustering technology, operators can efficiently scale their networks to meet ever increasing subscriber demand. EV-DO is a wireless technology that delivers high-speed mobile Internet, multimedia and entertainment services to millions of subscribers worldwide.

The release of Airvana’s latest EV-DO technology enables operators to deploy push-to-talk services that for the first time can meet or exceed the most stringent performance requirements, such as uncompromising quality-of-service and sub-one-second “push-to-beep” response time, on an All-IP mobile broadband network. By delivering superior push-to-talk services on their existing EV-DO Rev A networks, operators are able to leverage the same mobile broadband network infrastructure that they are using to provide many other IP services.

In addition to supporting the introduction of new services, Airvana’s latest EV-DO technology helps mobile operators manage their rapid broadband subscriber growth. Airvana’s most recent EV-DO software release features Airvana’s pioneering and patent-pending RNC clustering technology. The RNC is a critical network element that manages subscriber sessions, connects users to an operator’s IP network and maintains connectivity as users cross cell boundaries. With Airvana’s RNC clustering, operators can deploy multiple RNCs without introducing any RNC borders. The result is that multiple RNCs behave like a single, virtual RNC that can serve a very large number of subscribers. An operator’s use of RNC clustering helps subcribers avoid service interruption, especially when using delay-sensitive applications such as push-to-talk. Further, operators benefit by avoiding unnecessary signaling traffic typically seen in border areas of traditional RNCs.

“Any operator’s success is determined by its ability to introduce the services its customers demand, and deliver an exceptional user experience, all while reducing operating costs,” said David Nowicki, vice president of marketing and product management, Airvana. “With our new EV-DO software, mobile operators can cost-effectively deploy and scale valuable new service offerings.”

Airvana has demonstrated consistent success in delivering EV-DO equipment for operators’ macro-cellular networks worldwide. The company’s award-winning IP-based radio network technology is deployed in over 30 operator networks worldwide.

Verizon Wireless To Introduce ‘Any Apps, Any Device’ Option For Customers In 2008

Verizon Wireless To Introduce ‘Any Apps, Any Device’ Option For Customers In 2008 BASKING RIDGE, NJ — November 27, 2007 — Verizon Wireless today announced that it will provide customers the option to use, on its nationwide wireless network, wireless devices, software and applications not offered by the company. Verizon Wireless plans to have this new choice available to customers throughout the country by the end of 2008.

In early 2008, the company will publish the technical standards the development community will need to design products to interface with the Verizon Wireless network. Any device that meets the minimum technical standard will be activated on the network. Devices will be tested and approved in a $20 million state-of-the-art testing lab which received an additional investment this year to gear up for the anticipated new demand. Any application the customer chooses will be allowed on these devices.

This new option goes beyond just a change in the design, delivery, purchase, and provisioning of wireless devices and applications.

“This is a transformation point in the 20-year history of mass market wireless devices – one which we believe will set the table for the next level of innovation and growth,” said Lowell McAdam, Verizon Wireless president and chief executive officer. “Verizon Wireless is not changing our successful retail model, but rather adding an additional retail option for customers looking for a different wireless experience.”

Verizon Wireless will continue to provide a full-service offering, from retail stores where customers can shop, to 24/7 customer service and technical support, to an easy-to-use handset interface and optimized software applications.

While most Verizon Wireless customers prefer the convenience of full service, the company is listening through today’s announcement to a small but growing number of customers who want another choice without full service.

Both full-service and “bring-your-own” customers will have the advantage of using America’s most reliable network.

Following publication of technical standards, Verizon Wireless will host a conference to explain the standards and get input from the development community on how to achieve the company’s goals for network performance while making it easy for them to deliver devices.

Verizon Wireless has a track record of listening to customers and transforming entrenched industry practices based on those customer needs. The company parted with the industry last year when it introduced pro-rated early termination fees, and in 2004 when it refused to participate in a wireless directory when customers said they didn’t want one. Verizon Wireless also broke with “wireless tradition” when it supported local number portability because customers wanted the freedom to take their number if they switched service providers. Such responsiveness to customers has earned Verizon Wireless the strongest brand reputation in the industry.

Telefónica O2 Reports 110,000 Customers In The CDMA Network

Telefónica O2 Reports 110,000 Customers In The CDMA Network November 22, 2007 -- Telefónica O2 Czech Republic, the country's leading provider of telecommunications services, has announced the exceeding of the amount of 110,000 CDMA customers. The first 3G network in this country was opened in August 2004, to soon win a lot of popularity among the residential and business clients. The first high-speed mobile Internet, available to all users, triggered a huge wave of demand for this type of services. For Telefónica O2, CDMA represents one of the priorities making it continuously upgrade the parameters of the data network.

" The success of O2 Internet Mobil, using the CDMA technology, has clearly proved that among customers there is a huge demand for advanced mobile technologies. From the strategic point of view, it stands to reason that we keep developing the CDMA. The attractiveness of the service is reflected by the high numbers of people asking for the service, " says Matts Johansen - Director of Marketing for Business and Corporate Segment of Telefónica O2 - on the published figures.

Our customer base has been growing since the earliest stages after the service launch. In mid-last year, we achieved 100,000 clients and, the upward trend should continue in the future. A significant contributor to this success is the company's consistent innovation of the network and the relevant hardware.

After the introduction of AnyData ADU 630WH and O2 Internet Mobil Plus, having enabled our clients to access Internet at the maximum speed regardless of network technology (CDMA, HSDPA, UMTS, GPRS), in November we launched Revize A, which is an enhanced version of the current CDMA network (called Release 0). Its cardinal benefit is a higher capacity for sending data from the customer (upstream direction) raising the speed from the current 156kbps to 1.8 Mbps. For the downloading of data (the downstream direction) this version enables the speed of 3.1 Mbps. This innovation also involves a new CDMA modem, Axesstel MV110H, which is compatible with both types of networks (Revize A and Release 0).

By the end of the year, the new version of CDMA will have covered 30% of our population upgrading more than a third of the current CDMA network, specifically the following towns and neighbourhoods: Bohumín, České Budějovice, Česká Lípa, Český Těšín, Chomutov, Děčín, Frýdek?Místek, Havířov, Hradec Králové, Jablonec nad Nisou, Jihlava, Karlovyh Vary, Karvinná, Kladno, Kolín, Liberec, Mladá Boleslav, Most, Olomouc, Opava, Orlová, Ostrava, Pardubice, Plzen, Prostějov, Přerov, Příbram, Tábor, Teplice, Třebíč, Ústí nad Labem and Zlín. Verizon Wireless customers can now download – for free – three songs from David Gilmour, the voice and guitar of the legendary Pink Floyd. The live versions of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” “Wish You Were Here” and “Comfortably Numb,” are extracted from David Gilmour’s recent No. 1 live DVD Remember That Night – Live At The Royal Albert Hall. Fans will also be able to purchase these exclusive tracks as Ringtones or Ringback tones.

For a limited time, Verizon Wireless customers can use their V CAST Music-enabled phones or PCs to download the full-songs for free or purchase the Ringtone or Ringback tones of the following songs:

• “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” – available now through Dec. 6

• “Wish You Were Here” – available Dec. 7 through Dec. 27

• “Comfortably Numb” – available Dec. 28 through Jan. 18

Verizon Wireless customers can find these songs in the What’s New or Featured category on V CAST Music-enabled phones, and online in the V CAST Music Store. The Ringtone and Ringback tones for each song will be available for purchase for a limited time, at the same time the full-track song is available for free. Verizon Wireless plans to make all three full-track songs, Ringtones and Ringback tones available for purchase next year.

In support of the launch of David Gilmour’s new DVD Remember That Night – Live At The Royal Albert Hall Verizon Wireless will launch a new mobile marketing program promoting the new release. As part of the program, interactive MMS video messages will be sent to customers to promote each of the exclusive songs, as well as David Gilmour’s new DVD. This new mobile marketing program will encourage fans to interact, download, and stay connected to V CAST Music.

“We are honored to be the first digital music service to deliver these memorable live David Gilmour performances and share this legendary music with an intrinsically mobile generation of fans,” said Ed Ruth, director of digital music for Verizon Wireless.

David Gilmour said, “I am pleased to be able to use new mobile technologies to let people know about my new performances. Hopefully this exposure will encourage music fans to discover some of the other great stuff on Remember That Night as well.”

David Gilmour is most widely known for his distinctive vocals, guitar playing and song writing as a key member of rock legends Pink Floyd. With worldwide success during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon is the third most successful album of all time. David assumed control of Pink Floyd in 1985 after Roger Waters' departure, and continued to deliver number one records on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as sell-out world tours. In 2005, Pink Floyd reunited with Roger Waters for a one-off performance at Live 8 in London's Hyde Park, which was regarded by many as the highlight of an astonishing show. In 2006, David released his third solo album, On An Island, which entered the UK Charts at the Number 1 position and the US Charts at number 6, subsequently hitting the top position in the pan-European Charts, as well as achieving multi-Platinum sales around the world.

Mobile Broadband Upgrade Complete

Mobile Broadband Upgrade Complete November 20, 2007 - Telecom’s upgrade to its nationwide Mobile Broadband network with ‘rev a’ technology is now complete.

The last mobile site to be upgraded was at the remote Pihanga Trig, near Turangi, with technicians flying to the site by helicopter. The site provides Mobile Broadband coverage on the Desert Road, State Highway One.

Telecom General Manager of Business Products, Martin Butler says the $18.5 million rollout - which began in Auckland in December last year - has been very successful.

“Mobile Broadband is now available to around 80 percent of the places where New Zealanders live and work and is being increasingly used outside the main urban centres,” he said.

Mobile Broadband can be used on some mobile phones, and by laptops or notebook computers using a Mobile Broadband data device.

The technology enables Telecom customers to surf the Internet, download and upload larges files, and to check their emails and online calendars.

Telecom’s upgraded Mobile Broadband cell sites on average enable download speeds of 800 kilobits per second and upload speeds of 300Kbps, making it easier to work away from home or the office.

“We’re hearing many excellent stories about how the technology has changed the way people access the Internet – for the better. Our enhanced service is delivering faster mobile data services to more places than ever so more people can experience the benefits,” he said.

Telecom has three Mobile Broadband data devices, including a USB modem, a PCMCIA data card and an express card, so customers can use the device which best suits their needs.
