Before The First Pitch Is Thrown, Verizon Wireless’ Network Is Game-Ready

Before The First Pitch Is Thrown, Verizon Wireless’ Network Is Game-Ready BOSTON and DENVER — October 24, 2007 — With the umpire ready to shout “Play ball!,” Verizon Wireless, the leading wireless company with the nation’s most reliable wireless voice and data network, is ready for all the action. Verizon Wireless works year-round to expand coverage, increase capacity and strengthen the quality of its wireless network to ensure it is the MVP when it comes to handling the increased call volumes that occur around special events, including baseball’s biggest games.

In Boston, Verizon Wireless has increased its network capacity by activating a temporary cell site at Fenway Park. The Cell on Wheels (or COW) is a mobile cell site that enhances wireless capacity - allowing more customers to concurrently place calls, exchange text and picture messages, and download multimedia content. More than 260,000 text messages were exchanged around Fenway during the October 12 game.

During the recent big games in Denver, Verizon Wireless experienced up t o 12 times the usual call volume on its downtown area network. To make sure the network remains game-ready in the Mile High City, the company has added two new cell sites earlier this year to improve coverage and capacity along the 16th Street Mall and near the Pepsi Center sports complex; augmented capacity to existing sites that serve Coors Field and the surrounding area; and enhanced in-building coverage at several hotels in the downtown area for visiting baseball fans and customers.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $40 billion since it was formed – more than $5 billion on average every year – to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services. In 2006 the company invested $6.6 billion, and in the first six months of this year has invested $3.4 billion.

Verizon Wireless offers a host of applications and services from V CAST Mobile TV, V CAST Video, Mobile Web 2.0SM and Get It Now® to keep fans up to date with the latest scores and highlights while on-the-go.! V CAST Mobile TV subscribers who want to keep up with the action from their wireless phones can visit www.verizonwireless.com/mobiletv to view the program guide to see what’s on in the next 48 hours. Specially Produced Mobisodes Of Tyler Perry’s HOUSE OF PAYNE Now Available On V CAST From Verizon Wireless BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and ATLANTA — October 18, 2007 — Tyler Perry’s HOUSE OF PAYNE, the breakout TBS sitcom hit, is coming to Verizon Wireless V CAST Video phones as a series of short mobisodes. Between one and three minutes in length, the specially produced mobisodes are available in the TBS Very Funny channel, which launched in July on Verizon Wireless’ V CAST Video service. To date, TBS has created 10 HOUSE OF PAYNE mobisodes, all directed by Tyler Perry himself.

In addition to the HOUSE OF PAYNE mobisodes, comedy fans can also access video clips from TBS’s line-up of top-rated contemporary comedy series through Verizon Wireless’ V CAST Video service, including Seinfeld, King of Queens, Family Guy and Everybody Loves Raymond. The channel will also occasionally offer sneak peeks of upcoming TBS programming, such as TBS’s upcoming late-night series Frank TV.

“Offering original content like the HOUSE OF PAYNE mobisodes through Verizon Wireless is a unique way to continue to serve the fan base of this very popular show,” said Jeff Gregor, chief marketing officer for TBS, TNT and TCM. “Original content like these mobisodes, combined with clips from our hall of fame sitcoms and previews of upcoming TBS shows, allow us to expand the reach of the TBS Very Funny brand into the mobile world.”

Ryan Hughes, vice president of digital media programming for Verizon, noted, “HOUSE OF PAYNE on V CAST is an example of great snack-sized programming for our on-the-go customers, delivering entertainment they crave on their mobile phones.”

HOUSE OF PAYNE was created by wunderkind Tyler Perry (Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea’s Family Reunion), who also directs every episode. Set in Atlanta, the series features LaVan Davis as fireman Curtis “Pops” Payne, a man who believes his house should be his castle, he the king and his wife, Ella (Cassi Davis), the queen. Unfortunately, their castle has turned into Grand Central Station thanks to frequent visits from their son, Calvin (Lance Gross), a college student whose lack of funds keeps him returning to his parents’ table, as well as from their nephew CJ (Allen Payne) and CJ’s family: wife Janine (Demetria McKinney) and children Malik (Larramie Doc Shaw) and Jazmine (China McCain). Pops is forced to give up even more of his precious privacy when CJ’s house burns down and Ella offers to take in the entire family.

HOUSE OF PAYNE, which comes to TBS from Debmar-Mercury, premiered with ad-supported cable’s #1 sitcom telecast of all time among key adult demos, households and viewers. Airing currently with back-to-back episodes Wednesdays beginning at 9 p.m. (ET/PT), the show ranks as ad-supported cable’s #1 sitcom among adults 18-49 and television’s #1 program among African-American adults 18-49.

The HOUSE OF PAYNE mobisodes feature short vignettes of family life among the Paynes. In one mobisode, Malik and Jazmine attempt to hustle Curtis with a card trick, but their plans are thwarted when they try to pull the same trick on Calvin. Another has Curtis mourning the loss of a “friend” that turns out to be nothing more than a household object. And still another has the family conducting an intervention for Calvin over his aimless lifestyle.

Over-The-Air Technology Will Simplify Updating Of Verizon Wireless Phones’ System Software

Over-The-Air Technology Will Simplify Updating Of Verizon Wireless Phones’ System Software BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and SUNNYVALE, CA — October 18, 2007 — Verizon Wireless today announced that it is introducing new technology that will deliver system software updates over-the-air to new handsets. With a technology from InnoPath Software Inc., Verizon Wireless customers will be able to easily update embedded system software, technically called “firmware,” on some of the newest handsets using over-the-air technology.

The over-the-air download is designed to proactively alert Verizon Wireless customers to upgrade their system software before issues are apparent and will allow customers to avoid a visit to a store that is sometimes required to have an update installed. Using InnoPath’s “Firmware Over-the-Air” solution, Verizon Wireless customers will receive a message on their wireless phone indicating that a new handset update is available. Customers will be periodically notified to download the updated software package by following simple on-screen prompts that w ill guide them through the process in a matter of minutes. The technology will be introduced in some new phones starting later this year, and throughout 2008.

Firmware, or system software, on mobile phones is a program or set of instructions programmed into the hardware of the device. Updates of firmware can enhance the calling quality and functionality of a device.

“In the face of increasing device complexity, InnoPath technology provides Verizon Wireless with an over-the-air solution designed to deliver improved mobile device performance and customer satisfaction,” said Stanley Zadrozny, executive director of network technology development at Verizon Wireless. “This technology will help many customers avoid software or firmware problems that can occur, and also avoid a trip to a communications store to get the fix manually installed by a technician. It’s a time- and trouble-saver for customers, and a way for us to serve many customers quickly and conveniently. Verizon Wireless stands for reliability and this is one more way Ve! rizon Wi reless delivers on that promise.”

“Verizon Wireless is known for best-in-class customer satisfaction and leads the way in the deployment of innovative services,” said John Fazio, president and CEO of InnoPath. “Their selection of InnoPath to support their network-wide firmware over-the-air server requirements is further evidence of our ability to deliver world-class solutions to a world-class mobile operator.”

Verizon Wireless, Sunnyvale, CA-based InnoPath and handset manufacturers have worked closely over the last year to define requirements and ensure device availability for Verizon Wireless’ “Firmware Over-the-Air” rollout. This includes the development of operational procedures, network engineering, project management, training, and the deployment of a geographically distributed, high-availability system. In addition, InnoPath has extended its solution approach to the device side and performed a key role in the development, delivery, testing, and integration of over-t he-air upgrade clients for various Verizon Wireless devices.
