Sprint, Microsoft Deliver Mobile Search Innovations

Sprint, Microsoft Deliver Mobile Search Innovations OVERLAND PARK, Kan. and REDMOND, Wash. — 09/18/2007 — As part of the strategic alliance between Sprint and Microsoft Corp., today the two companies are providing Sprint customers with the industry's first fully integrated GPS location-aware mobile search service with entire Internet search on Sprint phones. Voice search by Live Search for mobile using Tellme technologies will also be available on select Sprint phones as a separate download. The new services enable people to find Web, local, and phone content easily using traditional input methods or voice.

With the enhanced mobile search service launching today, Sprint customers can now:

• Search the entire Web, local listings and maps, and Sprint's mobile content catalogue using the same familiar search box powered by Live Search, on the Sprint mobile Web home page.

• Use Sprint's built-in GPS capabilities to automatically find local businesses and listings nearby quickly and easily without needing to manually enter location information. The new GPS-enabled search allows customers to give permission to let their phone automatically identify their location to return nearby business search results, such as the closest gas station, pizza place or movie theatre – all by simply typing in or, on select phones, speaking the name or category of business for which they are searching.

Additionally, Sprint is the first mobile operator in the U.S. to launch GPS-enabled voice search capabilities, which are powered by Live Search for mobile. Customers can simply say the business listing and then see the search results on the screen. Speaking rather than typing makes it even easier for customers to find the results they are looking for. This feature uses award-winning voice user interface design from Microsoft's recent acquisition Tellme.

"With Live Search on Sprint devices, Sprint customers now carry with them a GPS-enabled search tool providing open Internet search, local listing search and mobile content search, all in one easy service," said Kevin Packingham, vice president of product management for Sprint. "We look forward to working with Microsoft to continue developing innovative mobility solutions that bring together exceptional products and services from both companies for business and consumer subscribers."

"The location based and voice technologies we're delivering today with Sprint are a first in the US mobile industry bringing customers a smart and easy search experience on the phone," said Brian Arbogast, vice president of Mobile Services organization at Microsoft. "We are focused on working with industry leaders like Sprint to bring new and innovative services to market for customers, and creating new business and revenue opportunities for our partners."

Sprint and Microsoft initially announced their strategic alliance in November 2006, when the companies launched combined mobile content and local listings search capabilities and committed to delivering GPS-enabled search. The two companies plan to continue to deliver industry-leading wireless data experiences together by combining Sprint's strength in data services and Microsoft's award-winning mobile search experiences. On average, Sprint customers spent an industry-leading $9.75 per month on wireless data at the end of the second quarter of 2007.

The enhanced Sprint mobile search experience powered by Live Search is immediately available at no additional cost to Sprint data subscribers on most data-enabled Sprint phones. On select Sprint phones, voice search will be available to customers as a free download. Standard data charges apply.

“SaskTel remains committed to offering its customers the latest and most advanced wireless services available,” Minister Responsible for SaskTel Deb Higgins said. “This latest network enhancement, combined with this year’s previously announced improvement and expansion initiatives, will bring SaskTel’s total investment in digital cellular service since 1998 to over $161 million. Over 95 percent of Saskatchewan residents now have access to SaskTel digital cellular service.”

“With the much higher speeds made possible by 1xEV-DO technology, SaskTel cellular customers are able to use wireless data services such as content downloads, video and audio streaming, mail and messaging, push-to-talk service, and web browsing at speeds close to residential internet high speed connections,” SaskTel President and CEO Robert Watson said. “We will continue to invest in our network to provide our customers with the latest wireless technologies over the largest digital cellular network in the province.”

1xEV-DO Rev A is a third generation network technology available to Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) cellular carriers that will support download speeds of up to 3.1 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps. If customers roam outside of the 1xEV-DO coverage area, the device will switch to 1xRTT coverage automatically. SaskTel’s entire digital network has been enabled with1xRTT functionality since 2003.

WeatherBug Becomes Premier Provider Of Weather Information To Verizon

WeatherBug Becomes Premier Provider Of Weather Information To Verizon BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and GERMANTOWN, MD — September 12, 2007 —Verizon Wireless, the nation’s leading wireless service provider, and WeatherBug®, the leading provider of live, local weather information, announced today that WeatherBug has been selected by Verizon as the company’s exclusive weather partner for several of its mobile entertainment and information services. Verizon Wireless customers can now receive WeatherBug’s live, neighborhood weather – the most precise coverage available – via text messages, through the Get It Now® virtual store, on V CAST Video and through Mobile Web 2.0SM. In addition, WeatherBug content will be available on certain Verizon Online Web sites serving both FiOS Internet and Verizon High Speed Internet customers.

The WeatherBug Network is the world’s largest. It combines live weather sensors and cameras located primarily atop schools, with publicly available weather data from around the world, to deliver weather information with a degree of accuracy, precision and timeliness unmatched in the industry. Other services attempt to approximate such localized and specific coverage by using readings that are an hour or more old and from airports many miles away, which leads to unnecessary inaccuracies.

“The ability to get weather updates, potentially life-saving weather alerts and information while on-the-go is important for our wireless customers,” said Ryan Hughes, vice president of digital media programming for Verizon. “By offering WeatherBug’s reliable and accurate weather coverage across all Verizon platforms, we can create a consistent experience for our customers, regardless of the service they prefer to use to get their information.”

Also seen on local broadcast television newscasts nationwide, WeatherBug has an extremely loyal online following. According to comScore Media Metrix–June 2007, WeatherBug is the number one Web weather property in terms of monthly visits, page views and time spent. It is also one of the top five Web properties in the United States overall in terms of days visited per user per month, a key measure of loyalty and repeat usage.

“We started WeatherBug fifteen years ago on a foundation of technology innovation, and today we continue to lead the way in creating new and unique applications for mobile and broadband users,” said Bob Marshall, president and chief executive officer of WeatherBug. “We are extremely pleased to be selected by Verizon, and look forward to developing creative new ways to help Verizon customers plan their day and stay safe whatever the weather, while they’re at home, at work or on-the-go.”

In addition to WeatherBug supplying information to Verizon Wireless’ array of consumer services, WeatherBug Protect, WeatherBug’s flagship weather alerting product for enterprise users, will be available to Verizon Wireless business customers. WeatherBug Protect turns mobile phones into emergency notification devices by delivering severe weather alerts that are unique to the WeatherBug Network.

As part of the agreement, Verizon Wireless’ Network Operations Centers and Verizon’s field service teams will utilize WeatherBug’s enterprise products, WeatherBug Protect and WeatherBug Streamer, to improve operational efficiencies and keep field personnel safe from severe weather.

Nex-Tech Wireless Selects Alcatel-Lucent’s CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A Technology To Upgrade Network For Wireless Broadband Services In Central And Western Kansas Hays, Kansas, Annandale and Murray Hill, N.J., September 5, 2007 —Alcatel-Lucent and Commnet Supply, an Alcatel-Lucent Business Partner, have announced that Nex-Tech Wireless has selected Alcatel-Lucent’s third-generation (3G) CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO Revision A (Rev. A) technology to upgrade its network in central and western Kansas, along with eastern Colorado. Commnet Supply, a Lucent Business Partner, signed a contract with Nex-Tech Wireless to deliver, install and maintain the Alcatel-Lucent solution.
