Shakira U.S. Arena Tour Kicks Off With A Technology Boost From Verizon Wireless

Shakira U.S. Arena Tour Kicks Off With A Technology Boost From Verizon Wireless BEDMINSTER, NJ and NEW YORK — April 28, 2006 — Bringing one of the world’s hottest artist to the stage, Verizon Wireless today announced it will be presenting Shakira’s “Oral Fixation” North American tour this summer and leveraging wireless technology to ensure her fans have a unique concert experience. The “Oral Fixation” North American tour begins on August 9 at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, TX and culminates on September 25 with a performance at the Dodge Arena in McCallen, TX.

In a music and wireless industry first, Shakira will send a multimedia personal video invitation customized to each city she goes to, inviting her fans to come hear her play in their local arena. Fans with Verizon Wireless phones will have the option to text or click through to purchase and win tickets. Some Shakira concertgoers will receive a multimedia message barcode ticket sent to their Verizon Wireless phones. When they arrive at the concert, the wireless bar code tickets will be scanned to get them into the show.

Fans will also help Shakira determine what songs she performs on the tour. Verizon Wireless customers will be able to text which favorite Shakira songs they feel should be played on the “Oral Fixation” tour. Several lucky winners will get the opportunity to go backstage and see what the “Oral Fixation” tour looks like behind-the-scenes.

In a career that spans nearly a decade and has seen more than 33 million albums sold worldwide, singer/songwriter, five-time GRAMMY® winner Shakira is without a doubt one of the most galvanizing live performers onstage today. The Colombian-born Shakira is well known for her energetic live rock shows, which feature her band and the kind of hi-tech stage production that is without rival among contemporary performers.

Energized by her Top Ten hit “Hips Don’t Lie,” which debuted exclusively on the Verizon Wireless V CAST service, Oral Fixation Vol. 2 is firmly planted in the Top Ten of the album charts and has already sold well over a million copies in the United States alone. With “Hips Don’t Lie,” Verizon Wireless and Shakira made mobile music history with the simultaneous world premiere of the full-length song, music video, ring tone, ring back tone, wallpaper and behind-the-scenes footage of the video shoot for the single prior to it being available in stores or at Web retailers.

“As an artist, I am always looking for new creative mediums,” said Shakira. “The Verizon Wireless V CAST service gives me a unique platform to offer different musical expressions that fans can access instantaneously through their mobile phones.”

Shakira is also known for using wireless technology to reach her fans. She was among the first music artists to introduce exclusive content to Verizon Wireless V CAST customers last year. To ensure that as many fans as possible can participate in the “Oral Fixation” tour, Shakira and Verizon Wireless are taking their relationship to the next level by bringing unprecedented interactivity between Shakira and her fans.

“Verizon Wireless has been an industry leader when it comes to extending the wireless experience beyond voice. A music fan today can use a Verizon Wireless phone to download ring tones, ring back tones, wallpaper and now tickets to their favorite rock concert,” said John Harrobin, vice president of marketing for Verizon Wireless. “Wireless technology and phones are now an integral part of the concert experience, and Shakira recognizes it is a phenomenal way to connect directly with fans.”

“Verizon Wireless is really at the forefront of the mobile music matrix. They have been a collaborator in effectively launching two new Shakira albums in two languages this year,” said Ceci Kurzman, Shakira’s manager. “Their multimedia offerings allow us to have a completely integrated business model that supports all the forms of music we can offer.”

To keep up to date with Shakira’s latest music, fans can continue to download her full-length songs, ring tones, ring back tones and music videos to their Verizon Wireless phones through the company’s V CAST service. • Saint Augustine, FL - New advanced digital cell site in the heart of the city’s historic district

• Boca Raton, FL - New advanced digital cell site near Lynn University to improve in-building wireless coverage on the university campus, as well as in and around Towne Center at Boca Raton, and along Interstate 95

• Cocoa Beach, FL - New advanced digital cell site on the popular “Space Coast” to expand wireless coverage to Patrick Air Force Base and provide continuous coverage along Pineda Causeway between Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach

• Tarpon Springs, FL - New advanced digital cell site near Alternate U.S. 19, including the city's historic sponge docks

• Marathon, FL - New advanced digital cell site to provide reliable coverage for visitors to the Florida Keys

• Clearwater, FL - New advanced digital cell site west of U.S. 19, as well as Belleair and Belcher roads

These new sites are part of Verizon Wireless’ continuous, aggressive network investment – now totaling more than $30 billion nationwide during the past six years - to help the company stay ahead of growing demand for its wireless services throughout the country.

All enhanced coverage is the direct result of network studies, designed to improve Verizon Wireless' network performance. The company’s ‘most reliable network’ claim is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country. These engineers conduct more than 300,000 call attempts monthly on Verizon Wireless’ and other national carriers’ networks while traveling over 100,000 miles a month in specially equipped company-owned test vehicles.

Verizon Wireless' network improvements were critical to the quick disaster response efforts by the company during the 2005 Hurricane season. Nearly 80 percent of all Verizon Wireless sites have their own back-up generator – in addition to battery power – to keep the network running even when the power supply is interrupted. As a result, in Florida, the Verizon Wireless network remained on-air while landlines and other wireless providers faltered.

Sprint® Family Locator Helps Give Parents Peace Of Mind

Sprint® Family Locator Helps Give Parents Peace Of Mind OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — 04/13/2006 — It can be unsettling for a parent or guardian when a child is late coming home from school or misses an after-school activity. Today, Sprint launches a location-based service, Sprint Family Locator by WaveMarket Inc., that can help give parents peace of mind. Sprint is the first U.S. wireless carrier to offer a consumer-focused LBS application that enables a parent to use a phone or PC to pinpoint the location of a child on a map along with the address, surrounding landmarks, and accuracy of the information within a specified radius.

"Sprint Family Locator is a valuable tool that can help parents and guardians have a better sense of their children's whereabouts when they're apart," said Danny Bowman, vice president of product marketing for Sprint. "This is the latest Sprint innovation that uses GPS technology to improve the way families connect, communicate and locate one another."

Sprint Family Locator has a host of privacy and security features:

• Permissions: To activate the service, parents and guardians can list up to four phone numbers they want to locate. For additional security, the parent creates a safety word that the parent and child both use only during the registration process to ensure permissions have been granted by both parties. Parents can also give permission to others, such as a grandparent or nanny, to locate a child.

• Locate: When a parent or guardian requests the child's location, Sprint Family Locator uses GPS technology to pinpoint the location and display it on an interactive map, along with the street address and surrounding landmarks, on the parent's or guardian's phone or PC. The child is notified by a text message each time his or her location is provided to the parent or guardian, ensuring open communication.

• Contact: Once the child is located, the parent or guardian can immediately call or send a text message to the child's phone.

• Safety check: The parents or guardian can set alerts to notify them when the child arrives at a specified location, such as a school, home or a relative's house at a designated time. For example, a parent or guardian can be notified whether a child has arrived at school by 8:15 a.m. each day.

• Reports: Information on recent location requests is provided in text and map form. "We encourage parents and guardians to maintain open and frequent communication with their children" said Nancy A. McBride, national safety director for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). "We also remind them to supervise their children and discuss safety tips with them for staying safer when traveling to and from school or after-school activities."

Following are a few tips adapted from NCMEC's Knowing My Rules for Safety to help parents and guardians practice safety measures every day:

• Always check with your parents or guardians before going anywhere, getting into a vehicle, or leaving with anyone

• Take a friend when going places or playing outside

• Say "no" and get away from any situation that makes you feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused, and remember to tell your parents or a trusted adult if something like this happens

Sprint Family Locator is available for download on 17 phone models and can be used to locate 30 GPS-enabled phone models on the Nationwide Sprint PCS Network and the Nextel National Network. For $9.99/month, subscribers can register up to four phones to locate, get unlimited location requests and send 100 text messages to each child phone. The service is available at www.sprint.com/familylocator; on Sprint phones' homepage under downloads/applications/find it; and on Nextel phones' homepage under downloads and services/applications/browse/GPS.

Sprint Nextel has the longest history in the industry with location-based services, beginning in 2000 with location and mobility services, the first GPS-enabled phone to support E911 services in 2001 and the first navigation service on mobile phones with turn-by-turn voice-guided driving directions in 2003. Sprint Nextel continues to be the industry leader in location-based services by offering the largest portfolio of wireless mobility solutions for enterprise, general business and consumers. The consumer applications include turn-by-turn directions, point-of-interest and specialty applications such as Garmin Mobile, TeleNav, BiM Active, Sprint Family Locator, Rand McNally Mobile Travel Tools, and MapQuest Find Me. Frost & Sullivan recognized Sprint Nextel with the 2005 Company of the Year Award in LBS for excellence in successfully deploying and delivering location services and solutions.

Skyworks Supports LG's Award Winning Black Label Suite Of CDMA Handsets; Increasingly Popular And Innovative Radio Solution Enables Breakthrough Industrial Design

Skyworks Supports LG''s Award Winning Black Label Suite Of CDMA Handsets; Increasingly Popular And Innovative Radio Solution Enables Breakthrough Industrial Design WOBURN, Mass.--April 11, 2006--Skyworks Solutions, Inc., an industry leader in radio solutions and precision analog semiconductors, today announced that its complete CDMA radio is supporting several current as well as forthcoming platforms from LG Electronics, most notably their award winning and revolutionary LG5900 model, or "Black Label" handset. Providing features such as a touch-sensitive keypad, camera, MP3 player, and EVDO capability, the LG5900 or "Chocolate" phone is already a best seller in Korea, with more than 300,000 units sold there since its launch in November 2005. LG's Chocolate phone recently won Europe's 2006 Reddot and iF Design Awards, two of the continent's greatest accolades.

"Skyworks is delighted to be supporting LG's ramp of several increasingly popular and highly innovative CDMA phones," said Brian M. Daly, vice president of marketing for Mobile Platforms at Skyworks. "Our highly integrated radio delivers the necessary functionality and form factor that offer LG and others the ability to design the compact and feature-rich phones consumers demand."

Skyworks' CDMA radio system is a two chip solution that includes a direct conversion transmitter (SKY74068), low-noise amplifier (SKY74092), direct conversion receiver (SKY74100), power amplifier, SAW filters and various passive components. Together, they provide all the necessary functionality for a complete transmit and receive chain and reduce RF printed circuit board space by up to 75 percent versus discrete implementations, allowing for smaller, slimmer, feature-rich handsets. Skyworks' family of CDMA radios support several configurations of bands and modes, from CDMA-band or KPCS-band for single-band markets such as South Korea, China and India, to tri-band CDMA RF subsystems for South and North America. Each of these multi-chip modules offers substantial reduction in printed circuit board space, in addition to simplifying the customer handset design process by eliminating the need for external RF tuning and optimization.

Through its innovative and proprietary technology, Skyworks is providing radio architectures to four of the top five leading OEMs and is the industry's only high-volume supplier across all key air interfaces, namely CDMA, GPRS and EDGE.

The company's migration of customers from power amplifiers to front-end modules, and now to complete radio solutions that allow for smaller RF footprints and reduced bill-of-materials, not only enables Skyworks to significantly increase its addressable market, but uniquely positions the company to migrate customers to 3G technology where multimode capability is a requirement.

Sprint Furthers Its Mobile Music Leadership

Sprint Furthers Its Mobile Music Leadership LAS VEGAS — 04/06/2006 — The Sprint Music Store(SM), the first music service in the U.S. to allow song downloads over the air, is now the first wireless music service in the U.S. to announce that two million songs have been downloaded since its launch on Oct. 24, 2005. Additionally, the Sprint Music Store was honored last night with two high-profile industry awards, Wireless Week's Excellence Award for Mobile Content and Outlook 4Mobility's Innovation Award, during the CTIA Wireless 2006 conference in Las Vegas.

"The momentum of the Sprint Music Store is remarkable and truly an industry first, with our second million downloads reached in less time than our first million. Since we stopped offering free promotional incentives on January 14, the usage of the Sprint Music Store has actually increased, so our customers are clearly seeing the value in the convenience and ease of use of the Sprint Music Store. We're also very pleased that recognition of the Sprint Music Store extends to well-known industry observers such as Wireless Week and Outlook 4Mobility," said Nancy Beaton, director, entertainment and personalization for Sprint.

Wireless Week's annual Excellence Award for Mobile Content recognizes the single-most exemplary achievement for mobile content during the past year. Wireless Week's editors and writers submitted nominations for the award, and its editorial board ultimately selected the Sprint Music Store as the recipient. Criteria for the award is based on six categories: (1) vision and leadership, (2) subscriber growth, (3) marketing savvy and innovation, (4) customer and community service, (5) peer respect and (6) financial performance.

The Innovation Award from Andrew Seybold's wireless analyst and consulting firm, Outlook 4Mobility, was presented to the Sprint Music Store for being the first mobile music service in the U.S. to announce one million song downloads on February 15, 2006. This year Sprint is one of only six companies to receive an Innovation Award, which honors outstanding achievements throughout the entire wireless industry.

The Sprint Music Store allows customers to browse, preview and purchase songs while on the go anywhere on the nationwide Sprint Power Vision(SM) network. A growing selection of more than 400,000 songs from virtually every genre is available via EMI Music, SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group.

Key advantages of the Sprint Music Store are:

• Instant ability to download songs right over the air to the phone

• Second song copy is available for download to a computer

• Intuitive easy-to-use interface and menus

• Quick access directly from the phone's main menu

• Fast downloads (generally less than 45 seconds per song)

• Storage is increasable (for example, up to 1,000 songs with 1G optional memory card)

• Ability to transfer additional unprotected CD or MP3 files to the phone via a USB cable

For $2.50 per song, customers receive two copies of the song – one for their phone and another for their PC. Customers can also burn their music to a CD using Windows Media Player. To use the Sprint Music Store, a Sprint phone enabled for the Sprint Power Vision network is required, and a data plan is recommended.

Kyocera Wireless And International Road Dynamics Launch M2M Security System To Safeguard Vehicles Transporting Nuclear Materials

Kyocera Wireless And International Road Dynamics Launch M2M Security System To Safeguard Vehicles Transporting Nuclear Materials SAN DIEGO and SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN - (April 6, 2006) - Kyocera Wireless Corp., a leading global manufacturer of CDMA wireless handsets and devices, and International Road Dynamics (IRD), a leading intelligent transportation systems technology provider today announced their collaboration on IRD's Active Nuclear Source Tool Alarm. The new radiation tampering alarm system integrates the award-winning Kyocera 200 Module for real time, CDMA wireless communications and safeguards vehicles carrying hazardous nuclear materials. The innovative alarm system satisfies new requirements of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the safe transport of radioactive source materials. The solution has been approved for use with the largest CDMA carriers in North America as well as multiple regional carriers across the United States and Canada.

The Kyocera-enabled Active Nuclear Source Tool Alarm takes advantage of the inherent data capabilities and ubiquity of CDMA networks to provide mission-critical four-way protection against theft and dangerous accidents. First, the system requires positive driver authentication for operation of vehicles with a radiation source greater than 19 curries. In addition, the solution immobilizes vehicles parked in unsecured areas preventing unauthorized drivers from moving or stealing valuable resources. Finally, if the radiation source container is tampered with or damaged, an alarm sounds a high-pitched warning and simultaneously sends a message to both the IRD monitoring center and to a user-designated contact person. As a final layer of protection, an IRD technician contacts the user hot line as a redundant alert verification. Fail-safe points are built-in to give an employee time to shut down the drill if the alarm is accidentally tripped.

"With the Kyocera 200 Module already integrated in the IRD fleet management solution, IRD could easily and economically integrate a "plug & play" alarm solution to quickly provide a customer solution to protect resources, control costs and respond to new security standards required by the NRC," said Dean Fledderjohn, general manager of the M2M division at Kyocera Wireless Corp. "Smart investments in scalable M2M technology give enterprises who want to keep a competitive edge the flexibility to respond to the ever changing business environment."

The easy to deploy Active Nuclear Source Tool Alarm was designed for easy integration with IRD's industry-standard oil and gas fleet management solutions which allows remote GPS tracking of vehicles as well as increased productivity via remote monitoring and management of mission critical events, fleet vehicles and drivers. The new alarm is another in a series of innovative products designed for oil and gas and forestry industries that provide real-time interaction for a wide range of solutions such as: blast hazard switches and man-down alerts that allow 200+ meters effective distance from hazardous equipment; aftermarket seatbelt sensor kits for monitoring compliance with seatbelt safety regulations; central tire inflation systems to manage safety and onboard weight in harsh environments; and advanced driver scoring reports to reinforce safe driving behaviors.

"With homeland security challenges on the rise, often quickly and without warning, it's more important than ever to respond to customer needs promptly and as an integrated part of the team," said Tony Reynolds, fleet sales manager, International Road Dynamics. "We chose Kyocera Wireless as a communications technology partner for their easy to integrate and customer proven CDMA module. With Kyocera onboard, IRD can provide solid systems and solutions that allow customers to respond immediately to industry changes and protect their initial investments." Based on the CDMA 1xEVDO standard, the newest Third Generation (3G) wireless data technology available, TELUS' Wireless High Speed network offers clients mobile access to the Internet, e-mail servers and other data networks at speeds similar to broadband desktop access. Clients using the Sierra Wireless embedded module will experience typical download speeds of 400 to 700 kilobits per second, and possible speeds of more than 2 megabits per second.

“When TELUS announced Wireless High Speed last year, Panasonic customers began asking us if this was a possibility for ruggedized notebooks,” says Thom Leiper, Director, Communication and Computer Products, Panasonic Canada. “As we have done so many times in the past, Panasonic reacted to its customers’ requests. And once again, we continue to lead the ruggedized notebook market by offering next-generation, high-speed mobile data access.”

Adds Robert Blumenthal, TELUS’ senior vice president of products and services: "By uniting the broadband data access speeds of our Wireless High Speed network with the newest ruggedized portable computing products from Panasonic, TELUS continues to provide Canadian business with the most powerful mobile data solutions available.” TELUS Wireless High Speed network coverage in Canada is already available in major urban centres across Canada, including Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City.

The dual-band Sierra Wireless EM5625 embedded module provides a powerful, reliable, wireless engine that offers "always-on" voice, data, and messaging functionality. The embedded module is designed to be fully backward compatible with TELUS' 1X network, which covers more than 90% of the Canadian population, and offers mobile data service where Wireless High Speed is not yet available.

"Having an integrated, always-there connection to TELUS’ Wireless High Speed network offers Toughbook customers a simple-to-use tool to help them remain responsive and work efficiently with colleagues from wherever they need to be,” said Dan Schieler, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales for Sierra Wireless. “We are pleased to work with Panasonic and TELUS to bring these benefits to the Canadian market.”

Both of the Panasonic notebooks feature full magnesium alloy casing (20 times the strength of ABS plastic casing); protection from drop, shock, vibration, water, dust, heat and cold; and Ultra Bright 13.3" 1024 x 768 XGA TFT colour direct sunlight viewable displays. Anritsu Company Introduces CDMA2000 Support For Signaling Tester

Anritsu Company Introduces CDMA2000 Support For Signaling Tester April 5, 2006 -- Anritsu Company introduces CDMA2000® 1X support for its MD8470A Signaling Tester, creating a uniquely small and highly integrated single desktop instrument solution in which user equipment (UE) developers and network operators can ensure CDMA2000® 1X and PPP signaling and application performance. The MD8470A's size and price enables UE developers to deploy more testers in their laboratories to perform crucial signaling and application testing prior to submitting their products to network operators.

The MD8470A CDMA2000® 1X option is based on a powerful CDMA2000® network simulator using a Perl-based scripting API as its primary interface for performing system configuration, physical channel, and condition setup. The simulator controls the air interface and PPP message transmission and reception, supporting the PPP signaling protocols LCP, IPCP, PAP, and CHAP. Through this API, UE developers and test integrators can accurately control protocol signaling behavior to thoroughly test UE signaling conformance and operation.

With its multi-carrier/sector option, one MD8470A supports up to 6-way soft/softer handoff and two-carrier simulations. The tester can dynamically allocate and de-allocate sectors and channels, support user-defined air interface messages, and synchronize multiple systems, allowing users to develop elaborate network simulations that better simulate and test real life network and application environments. The MD8470A's internal PC running Windows XP allows standard UE drivers and diagnostic tools to be installed directly on the tester, enabling efficient one-box UE automated testing and validation.

The MD8470A CDMA2000® option can be upgraded to support 1XEV-DO later this year, at which time the tester will support cost-effective Hybrid mode testing and real-time logging of protocol messages for CDMA2000®, 1XEV-DO, and PPP in a single log.

New Kyocera Wireless Security System To Thwart Use Of Potentially Dangerous Counterfeit And Aftermarket Batteries

New Kyocera Wireless Security System To Thwart Use Of Potentially Dangerous Counterfeit And Aftermarket Batteries LAS VEGAS - (April 5, 2006) - Kyocera Wireless Corp., a leading global manufacturer of CDMA wireless phones and devices, today announced a unique new security system designed to thwart the use of potentially dangerous counterfeit and aftermarket, non-authorized batteries in Kyocera phones. Beginning with the soon-to-launch Kyocera Strobe handset, forthcoming devices from Kyocera Wireless will use the patent-pending cipher-based solution to alert users of non-authentic batteries and disable the batteries from being recharged.

"We've done extensive testing of counterfeit and aftermarket batteries made for leading brands of cell phones and all too often their cost is kept down by removing important safety components and features," said Eddie Forouzan, Ph.D., lead battery engineer at Kyocera Wireless Corp. "Virtually every authentication technology introduced in this industry to date - from hologram stickers to static ID-chip solutions - has been compromised by aftermarket manufacturers. We felt it vital to create a dynamic solution that, by its very nature, is nearly clone-proof."

To achieve this level of security, Kyocera Wireless is embedding logic in all Kyocera battery packs. Unlike older technologies based on standard ID chips, each Kyocera chip has a unique identifier, much like a fingerprint. A battery is recognized as authentic only after the phone and battery have successfully communicated via layers of encryption based on convolution of data. The mathematical probability of creating a non-authorized battery that can overcome the Kyocera secure battery technology is one in tens of billions.

For several years Kyocera Wireless has taken aggressive steps to protect consumers from potentially dangerous counterfeit batteries entering the global market, ranging from a precautionary battery recall to extensive work with law enforcement agencies. Kyocera Wireless, along with a number of competitors and partners, helped to establish the IEEE/CTIA 1725 Working Group, a global industry body dedicated to ongoing improvements in the reliability of cellular batteries.

"We will continue to invest every effort and resource to protect consumers who place their trust in our products," said Tsuyoshi Mano, president of Kyocera Wireless Corp. "It is consistent with Kyocera Corporation's 47 years of honorable, ethical business practices and, beyond that, it's the right thing to do."

Kyocera Wireless Demonstrates Prototype Dual-Mode CDMA/Wi-Fi Handset With Boingo Integrated Wi-Fi Roaming At CTIA Show

Kyocera Wireless Demonstrates Prototype Dual-Mode CDMA/Wi-Fi Handset With Boingo Integrated Wi-Fi Roaming At CTIA Show LAS VEGAS - (April 5, 2006) - Kyocera Wireless Corp., a leading global manufacturer of CDMA wireless phones and devices, and Boingo Wireless Inc., the world's leading Wi-Fi network aggregator, today announced the demonstration of a prototype Kyocera BREW-based dual-mode Wi-Fi/CDMA handset with integrated Boingo public Wi-Fi roaming at the CTIA Wireless 2006 trade show in Las Vegas, addressing the growing market for WLAN-enabled handsets.

The prototype shows the ease with which global public Wi-Fi access can be integrated into the service offerings of operators and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) looking for a feature-rich dual-mode phone. Dual-mode CDMA/Wi-Fi devices leverage the ubiquity of wide-area 3G networks and the high-performance and cost savings of local-area Wi-Fi networks. In a real-world setting, network operators and MVNOs can optimize the dual-mode handset's application suite to automatically choose the appropriate mode, based on environmental and performance preferences.

"Dual-mode phones give users the ability to capitalize on the best network available for the task at hand," said Colby Goff, senior vice president of network strategy and business development for Boingo Wireless. "Kyocera Wireless has been instrumental in helping us achieve our vision of a prototype handset that can roam across the Boingo network globally."

"Giving carriers a solution that is eminently flexible and lets them capitalize on the performance and economic advantages of Wi-Fi while still retaining the full complement of mobile voice and data services has been high on our priority list," said Tom Maguire, vice president of global marketing at Kyocera Wireless Corp. "Boingo provides a powerful, lightweight software solution that meets our stringent requirements."

Dual-mode phones represent the convergence of 3G cellular services and Wi-Fi hot spot networks. The addition of Wi-Fi to a handset enhances cellular network connectivity by offloading high-bandwidth applications in hot spots where the price/performance ratio of Wi-Fi can be less than half that of cellular services. This is especially attractive to MVNOs who do not own their own networks and must purchase cellular access at the prevailing market rates.

Other applications for dual-mode handsets include connectivity when outside of service areas. When bundled with VoIP software, the dual-mode handset can send and receive calls in foreign countries where local GSM service is incompatible with the phone's core CDMA technology. Wi-Fi connectivity - in homes, offices, and public hot spots - also improves in-building connectivity and coverage where the cellular network signal is weak or unavailable.

Kyocera's prototype dual-mode handset leverages Boingo software specially designed for handsets and other mobile devices to enable global roaming and automatic user authentication across public Wi-Fi networks that are part of the Boingo® Roaming System. The software also includes complete network connection and profile management capabilities, allowing the user to configure connection profiles for private Wi-Fi networks such as home and office.

Next-generation wireless phones offering built-in Wi-Fi support stand to benefit end-users and network operators alike. Users within range of a Wi-Fi signal, or "hot spot", will experience significantly faster data throughput, improving the user experience. With the ability to offload data intensive applications from cellular data channels, service providers will improve their ability to manage network traffic and maintain peak performance. In addition, seamless interoperability between Wi-Fi and 3G networks promises new revenue opportunities for service providers by enabling delivery of data-intensive applications and services such as streaming video and interactive games, with minimal impact on network performance.

Both Kyocera Wireless and Boingo are members of MobileIGNITE, an industry alliance promoting MobileVoIP interoperability based on open standards, and have been collaborating with fellow member BridgePort Networks for the demonstration to showcase Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) solutions that ensure interoperability and a seamless user experience. The demonstration can be viewed at the Kyocera Wireless booth (#5426 North Hall ) and the BridgePort Networks booth (#3500 Hall C1/C2).

Motorola Introduces 3G Cellular Gateway In Latin America Through Agreement With Brightstar

Motorola Introduces 3G Cellular Gateway In Latin America Through Agreement With Brightstar LAS VEGAS, Nev. – 04 April 2006 - Motorola Inc., a global leader in wireless communications and seamless mobility, has introduced the Motorola NC800 Cellular Gateway in Latin America through a distribution agreement with Brightstar, a leading distribution and supply chain solutions company serving the wireless industry. With the Motorola Cellular Gateway and service provided by a local mobile operator, users can wirelessly connect to the Internet via their computers wherever CDMA cellular coverage is available. The Motorola Cellular Gateway will be on display at CTIA Wireless 2006 at the Motorola booth, Central Hall 3, Booth # 2606.

In many countries where wired Internet connectivity is available, options are limited to telco provided dial-up service with speeds averaging 28.8kbps. Installation of residential telephone lines to accommodate broadband services, if available, can take weeks or even months, contributing to very low numbers of people connected to the Internet. In Latin America, for example, it is estimated that less than 12 percent of the population has Internet connectivity.

The Motorola Cellular Gateway delivers a new opportunity for millions more to connect to the web. By creatively combining Wi-Fi and cellular technologies, the Motorola Cellular Gateway provides an exciting, easy-to-install, wireless Internet option to residential and small office users, letting them surf the web and download data at broadband speeds.

“The Motorola Cellular Gateway is an innovative solution that supports our vision of seamless mobility and helps connect the unconnected,” said Eduardo Conrado, vice president, Global Marketing, Motorola Networks. “By bundling this product with new service options, mobile operators have an opportunity to optimize network capacity and increase revenues while building loyalty among their customers.”

Integrated networking and Wi-Fi features within the Motorola Cellular Gateway allow multiple users to enjoy shared information and high-speed broadband access at the same time. In the home, for example, multiple family members can be working independently using different computers to complete online homework assignments, shop and catch up on e-mail. For small business owners and customers connecting to private networks, the Cellular Gateway’s integrated security and VPN pass through features deliver connectivity with confidence that their data is protected.

“This is an exciting product for the markets we serve,” said Fernando Rodriguez, vice president, Wireless Data & Telecom Solutions, Brightstar. “It provides a unique and much needed solution for high-speed broadband connectivity in Latin America where wired connections are impractical or where speed of the connection does not meet expectations of today’s broadband savvy consumers. “

The Motorola Cellular Gateway, first introduced in Latin America, is expected to be available in other regions of the world as additional distribution agreements are signed. This initial distribution agreement with Brightstar covers Central America, South America (excluding Brazil), Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. For more information on availability in Latin American markets, please contact the Wireless Data & Telecom Solutions team at Brightstar at +1-305-421-6000.
