New Zealand Towns Get High-Speed 3G Mobile Broadband For Christmas

New Zealand Towns Get High-Speed 3G Mobile Broadband For Christmas December 22, 2005 -- Telecom announced today it had completed its promised 3G mobile broadband rollout to every main town and city in New Zealand by Christmas.

Telecom Mobile General Manager Kevin Kenrick says every main town and city across the country is now enjoying the benefits of the fastest mobile network in New Zealand.

Cell sites in the towns, from Kerikeri to Invercargill, have been upgraded with EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimised) technology, allowing mobile data transfer at broadband speeds.

“EV-DO delivers peak data speeds from the network to the mobile device of 2.4Mbps with speeds typically averaging 500Kb per second – fast enough to make working remotely a reality.

“To put it in context, on the current 027 network information travels at up to 153Kbps with speeds typically averaging 40 – 80Kbps,” says Mr Kenrick.

Mr Kenrick says EV-DO is the fastest growing 3G technology in the world, and worldwide subscribers recently passed 185 million.

Mobile Broadband lets Telecom customers connect remotely to the Internet so they can research online information, send and receive emails or check appointments at broadband speeds using either their laptop or handheld device (PDA).

Outside Mobile Broadband coverage areas, users switch seamlessly to Telecom’s nationwide 027 mobile network which provides connection to the Internet at a lesser speed.

“The Mobile Broadband rollout is great news for holidaymakers who can’t quite leave the office behind – they’ll be able to access the Internet and download documents in many holiday spots including the Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Wanaka and Mt Maunganui,” says Mr Kenrick.

Mobile Broadband users can also access the service in Australia’s major metropolitan centres following a roaming agreement this year between Telecom and Telstra Australia.

“Australia is a key destination for business people and we view this as an important step towards seamless trans-Tasman telecommunications,” Mr Kenrick says.

The NFL is the only sports league that combines voting by fans, coaches and players to determine its all-star teams. It was the first professional sports league to offer online all-star voting in 1995.

Verizon Wireless Expands Its Network In Manhattan, New York, With Nine New Cell Sites ORANGEBURG, NY — December 13, 2005 — In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for residents, commuters and tourists in Manhattan, Verizon Wireless, operator of the nation’s most reliable wireless network, has expanded its network with nine new cell sites.

The new Manhattan cell sites will improve network coverage and capacity in the following areas:

• On the Upper West Side, in the areas surrounding W. 196th Street and Fort Tryon Park; St. Nicholas and W. 190th Street and High Bridge Park; along Harlem River Drive, from W 171st to 152nd Street; and along Riverside Drive, Broadway and Amsterdam Avenues from 152nd to 144th Streets.

Verizon Wireless invested more than $5.5 billion in its nationwide network last year alone to stay ahead of the growing demand for the company’s voice and data services, like two-way TXT Messaging, Picture Messaging and the new V CAST service which brings TV and other multimedia services to wireless phones over the company’s high speed broadband wireless network.

Demand for Verizon Wireless services continued during the third quarter as the company added 1.9 million net new customers. Verizon Wireless now serves 49.3 million customers nationwide.

Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess data network is the largest high-speed wireless broadband network in the U.S. BroadbandAccess service, now available in much of the New York Metro area and in 171 major US cities, provides customers with Internet access, access to corporate intranets and traditional e-mail functionality via laptop computers and personal digital assistants.

The company’s investment in its wireless network also is part of Verizon Wireless’ commitment to offer customers the most reliable service available in the nation. The company’s ‘most reliable network’ claim is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women who inspired the company’s national advertising campaign. The engineers conduct more than 300,000 call attempts monthly on Verizon Wireless’ and other national wireless carriers’ networks while traveling over 100,000 miles a month nationwide in specially equipped, company-owned quality test vehicles.*

BridgePort Networks Extends Mobile Phone With SoftMOBILE Solution CHICAGO – DECEMBER 13, 2005 – BridgePort Networks, a leader in convergence with its MobileVoIP solution offering, today announced the availability of the company’s SoftMOBILE solution. The solution brings together BridgePort Networks’ NomadicONE™ Network Convergence Gateway (NCG), a standard mobile phone and a soft phone client designed for PCs or laptops to offer a full suite of mobile voice and messaging. Targeted toward the teen, young worker, work-at-home employee and road warrior; this combination enables GSM and CDMA mobile providers to offer converged, single-number service that is consistently delivered to the user interface of choice - mobile phone or PC.

Exemplified by services such as Skype, SoftMOBILE improved on the PC-phone concept by enabling mobile providers to utilize existing mobile phone numbers to receive and place calls over a PC with a broadband connection. In this way, mobile providers remain in control of the mobile network while extending services to the internet. Leveraging the SoftMOBILE solution, mobile providers will be able to increase value and convenience to subscribers, as well as generate revenue opportunities while extending the mobile brand online.

“VoIP has been one of the most disruptive forces in the telecommunications industry in recent history,” said Mike Mulica, CEO of BridgePort Networks. “More importantly, through VoIP and convergence the traditional boundaries between service providers are blurring, as are opportunities for revenue and growth. The SoftMOBILE solution is a tested service that will give mobile providers a way to extend their value proposition to subscribers by making the mobile phone number the prime identity for all of there communications – regardless of location or coverage.”

Using the SoftMOBILE solution, mobile providers can route calls to and from the soft phone. Mobile service subscribers will be able to maintain a single identity number that is used via their mobile phone or from the soft phone on their PC. The same soft phone can also be used to send and receive text messages, and will have access to voice mail.

To use the SoftMOBILE solution, subscribers will download and configure the password protected, mobile provider branded soft phone onto their PC or laptop. After selecting two configuration options when the application is initially launched, all calls and messages made to the user’s mobile phone number can be received on the soft phone. Using a headset, the subscriber experiences the call as they would over the mobile phone. When the subscriber logs out of the soft phone (i.e. when the user needs to be mobile) calls and messages are received back to the user’s actual mobile phone.

SoftMOBILE will also enable mobile providers to create new service bundles and rate plans to better meet the needs of subscribers, and tap into revenue opportunities that would have otherwise been lost to competitive offerings that are internet based. For example, subscribers would benefit from the convenience of using their mobile phone number while taking advantage of improved in-building coverage of Wi-Fi (e.g. at home, in hotels, etc.). Meanwhile, mobile providers would retain subscriber usage in a setting where a subscriber may have traditionally switched to a landline or a competitive VoIP service.

BridgePort Networks’ SoftMOBILE solution was developed in conjunction with the company’s MobileIGNITE partners and is based on SIP.

Wireless Pro Bowl Record: More Than 1 Million Votes Cast Via Sprint Wireless

Wireless Pro Bowl Record: More Than 1 Million Votes Cast Via Sprint Wireless NEW YORK — 12/01/2005 — More than 1 million Pro Bowl votes have been cast via the Sprint wireless service, a 100-fold increase over the 10,000 wireless votes tallied last year, the NFL and Sprint announced today. Presented by Sprint, Pro Bowl voting will continue on NFL.com, in stadiums and via the Sprint wireless service through Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback PEYTON MANNING ranks first among Sprint wireless voters while Atlanta Falcons quarterback MICHAEL VICK, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver MARVIN HARRISON, Seattle Seahawks running back SHAUN ALEXANDER and Colts running back EDGERRIN JAMES round out the top five respectively.

The teams will be announced at 7 p.m. (ET) Wednesday, Dec. 21 on the 2006 Pro Bowl Selection Show on ESPN. The Pro Bowl will be played in Hawaii on Sunday, Feb. 12 and televised by ESPN.

Fans can cast their Pro Bowl ballot by text messaging “PRO” to 46635 from a phone using Sprint wireless service to vote for their favorite players at each position. Standard text messaging and data service charges apply.

Fans who vote for their Pro Bowl players then will be able to enter for a chance to win a trip to the Pro Bowl in the 2006 NFL Pro Bowl Sweepstakes presented by Sprint. The Grand Prize includes an all-expense-paid trip to the game in Honolulu as well as exclusive experiences such as the chance to meet and talk football with Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback JOHN ELWAY, attend practice, take a tour of Aloha Stadium, obtain pregame sideline passes and more.

The AFC and NFC All-Star squads are made up of the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group’s vote counts one-third towards determining the 43-man rosters that represent the American Football Conference and National Football Conference in the Pro Bowl. NFL players and coaches will cast their votes on Dec. 19-20. The NFL is the only sports league that combines voting by fans, coaches and players to determine its all-star teams. It was the first professional sports league to offer online all-star voting in 1995.

Sprint revolutionized the way NFL fans get their information when it launched NFL Mobile in October giving fans exclusive access to NFL content and original programming. NFL Mobile programming includes an all-NFL-all-the-time television channel -- NFL Network; exclusive video- and audio-on-demand highlights from NFL Films; and up-to-the-minute team/player scores, stats and injury information.

ZTE Becomes The Largest CDMA Vendor Of Telecom Egypt

ZTE Becomes The Largest CDMA Vendor Of Telecom Egypt December 1,2005 -- ZTE, the fastest growing global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions has signed a contract with Telecom Egypt for a 100,000 line CDMA WLL project in Cairo and the Delta region.

This follows an earlier agreement in which ZTE provided CDMA WLLL systems for the Delta region, and confirms ZTE as the largest CDMA equipment provider to Telecom Egypt.

Telecom Egypt is Egypt´s largest state-run wireline operator. Egypt has experienced rapid economic development in recent years and the Egyptian telecommunications market is similarly expanding quickly. Telecom Egypt chose CDMA WLL technology to enable rapid network development, allowing the operator to deliver wide coverage and to provide a wide range of customer services.

ZTE will construct the full-scale network and customise a range of solutions specifically for Telecom Egypt´s requirements.

In the first phase of the Telecom Egypt CDMA WLL project, ZTE provided 60,000 lines of CDMA equipment for fast developing and densely populated Delta region and surrounding regions. This system is now being put into commercial use.

Phase II of the project will continue to deliver the benefits of ZTE´s All-IP CDMA WLL platform including large capacity, stability, and smooth upgrade path to CDMA 2000 1xEVDO. ZTE will supply its 800M core network, access network and fixed wireless terminals.

The project will expand the Delta region network by 47,500 lines and build a new 52,500 line CDMA WLL network in 16 Cairo suburbs including Al-Maryotey and Maadi and in Ramsis and Opera where Telecom Egypt´s headquarters are sited.

"We have been impressed with the strength and depth of ZTE´s CDMA technology expertise," said Mrs. Dawlat El Badawi, V.C. for planning.

Up to now, ZTE CDMA products have been successfully deployed in nearly 60 countries with around 100 operators, with a global capacity of more than 30 million lines for commercial use. ZTE has become China´s largest telecommunication equipment exporter, and one of the leading CDMA equipment vendors in the world.

ZTE has captured over 20% market share in China Unicom´s CDMA network construction, and is now China´s largest CDMA equipment manufacturer. ZTE´s CDMA GoTa products have found widespread applications in over 20 countries including Russia, Norway and Malaysia. ZTE has built over 30 CDMA2000 1xEV-DO systems for commercial or trial use in more than 20 countries and regions including The Philippines, Vietnam, Pakistan and Mongolia.
