LaqTel selected Nortel to build an advanced wireless infrastructure to provide its subscribers with 'anywhere, anytime' access to a variety of services including Web browsing, large file downloads and online gaming at speeds comparable to fixed broadband connections like DSL. LaqTel also plans to offer business customers secure mobile access to their corporate data networks from any wireless device, making it possible for them to remain productive when away from the office.

"Laqtel's vision is to offer the widest range of high quality mobile telecommunication services to all the people of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as to our international visitors," said Michael Barrow, chief executive officer of LaqTel, which was recently awarded an operating license by the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago.

Magnolia Broadband Successfully Completes Field Trials Of Mobile Transmit Diversity Technology With SK Telecom

Magnolia Broadband Successfully Completes Field Trials Of Mobile Transmit Diversity Technology With SK Telecom SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA and BEDMINSTER, N.J. (July 27, 2005) ¡V Magnolia Broadband, Inc., a fabless semiconductor company and innovator of antenna diversity radio frequency (RF) solutions for the wireless industry, announced today that they have successfully completed field trials of Magnolia¡¦s Mobile Transmit Diversity solution, DiversityPlus„§, with SK Telecom, Korea¡¦s leading wireless telecommunications services provider. For the first time, the test results showed similar performance gains in commercially designed handsets as previously experienced in test platforms. As seen in this and prior tests conducted by SK Telecom, mobile transmit gains of 4 to 5 dB's have shown to significantly improve capacity, coverage and data throughput in commercial cdma2000 1xEVDO networks. The test also indicates that by deploying Magnolia¡¦s technology, network operators can significantly save on capital and operating expenses.

The field testing, which took place the week of July 18th in Seoul, was attended by more than 70 wireless industry leaders including other telecom carriers, handset OEM¡¦s, UMTS and WiMax base band chip providers. This test was a major interim milestone to SKT and Magnolia's road of offering handsets in 2006.

The commercial deployment of Magnolia¡¦s DiversityPlus chips in dual antenna cell phones will enable wireless carriers to significantly serve more subscribers within the same wireless infrastructure, eliminating the need for additional cell towers, while boosting coverage, data throughput and battery life. Additional benefits for carriers and consumers will be improved quality of service, include more reliable connections, fewer ¡§dead zones¡¨, improved quality of service and a substantial lowering in the amount of energy cell phones emit.

¡§We are very pleased with the results of the field testing with Magnolia¡¦s Mobile Transmit Diversity technology and we will continue to work with them closely so that we can realize the significant benefits in our network¡¨ said Dr. Myung Sung Lee, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President of SK Telecom.

¡§The successful results of the tests demonstrate that our innovative diversity technology will be a leading solution for enhancing CDMA based networks in the Korean and other global marketplaces,¡¨ said Osmo Hautanen, CEO of Magnolia Broadband. ¡§We are now looking forward to offering our solutions to other protocols such as UMTS and WiMax.¡¨

DiversityPlus„§ is a family of RF chipset products designed around Magnolia¡¦s unique algorithms for CDMA, UMTS and WiMax mobile terminals. By combining transmit and receive RF signals from two antennas in a unique way, the wireless operators increase their network capacity and significantly improve coverage and data rates to the individual subscriber. Simulations have shown that Magnolia expects comparable performance gains in both UMTS and WiMax.

"Mobility is a strategic element of business today because it can impact key areas of business - customer acquisition and loyalty, revenue growth through new products and services, and cost efficiency while maximizing return on investment," said Kenny Wyatt, vice president - Integrated Solutions, Sprint Business Solutions. "The Sprint Mobile Business Assessment is a unique way of helping businesses better understand the power of mobility to enhance these key areas and eliminate waste."

• Data collection - employee interviews, second- and third-party research

• Mobility analysis - equipment/software audits, access and policy evaluations

• Strategy development - actionable roadmap of tactical mobility initiatives

Although officially launching today, Sprint has been delivering mobile business assessments to business customers since late 2004. "Our customers are relieved to receive help with evaluation and management of the complexities inherent to any corporate mobility strategy," said Scott Boehmer, general manager - Mobile Business, Sprint Business Solutions.

Sprint Enhances Sprint PCS Data LinkSM Capabilities To Enable Wireless Replacement Of Wireline Data Access For Business Locations

Sprint Enhances Sprint PCS Data LinkSM Capabilities To Enable Wireless Replacement Of Wireline Data Access For Business Locations OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — 07/18/2005 — Further erasing the imaginary line between wireless and wireline communications technologies, Sprint today announced enhancements to Sprint PCS Data Link that allow customers to replace or back-up existing wireline data access for business locations or leverage new remote-access features for their mobile workforce. Wireless data access for office locations is an exciting new offer at Sprint, enabling business customers to leverage the low cost and flexibility of wireless as a true wireline data access replacement technology. Sprint expects to make these capabilities available to business customers next month.

Sprint PCS Data Link for Wireless WAN

Using a Sprint-certified CDMA modem, companies can use Sprint PCS Data Link to provide primary or back-up traditional wireline data access for fixed office locations, better meeting the needs of businesses that want a solution that is more economical than traditional wireline data access. It also enables fast deployment to support temporary or new retail facilities. Even if a line is cut, customer access will remain intact, so critical business applications can remain available.

Sprint PCS Data Link for Wireless WAN capabilities will appeal to a wide-range of industries. Examples of ways Sprint PCS Data Link for Wireless WAN can be used include:

• Retail – A rapidly expanding clothing retailer is able to use a combination of Sprint wireless service and SprintLinkSM Frame Relay to quickly and cost-effectively turn up new stores with added location flexibility.

• Financial Services – A nationwide financial-services provider backs-up branch offices and deploys mobile wireless ATM machines to increase convenience and continuity of services.

Regardless of the industry, companies can extend their applications virtually anytime, anywhere from the Sprint Nationwide PCS Network with average data speeds of 50 to 70 kbps. Sprint's deployment of broadband EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) will boost download speeds up to 10 times faster wherever EV-DO coverage is made available.

Sprint PCS Data Link for Mobile Access

Using a Sprint PCS Connection Card™ with a compatible laptop or handheld wireless device, mobile employees can quickly gain secure access to their company's intranet, databases, shared files, email and other corporate applications. Sprint PCS Data Link has its own connection manager or can be supported through Sprint Extended WorkplaceSM, a one-of-a-kind remote-access tool that allows users to view a menu of all available access options and click to connect to corporate resources.

"The introduction of Sprint PCS Data Link for wireless WAN demonstrates Sprint's ability to deploy wireless as an alternative option to traditional wireline services – a distinct advantage over our competitors," said David Owens, vice president – Marketing, Sprint Business Solutions. "Whether companies want to lower costs by establishing a primary wireless access connection or drive productivity with remote access to their mobile workforce, the new capabilities of Sprint PCS Data Link will provide the flexibility and security our business customers require."

Sprint PCS Data Link is part of Sprint's robust remote-access portfolio designed to help companies reduce costs, increase productivity and improve customer satisfaction. Whether connecting to Sprint's MPLS VPN, SprintLink Frame Relay or a Sprint-provided CPE IP VPN, the customer's traffic is protected by multiple security layers and is segregated from the public Internet until safely behind the corporate firewall.

With a nationwide wireless network and a Global IP network, Sprint is best-positioned to offer a growing array of connectivity choices and a unified user experience for mobile workers. Services include Sprint Extended Workplace, an enterprise-grade access tool for laptops that simplifies remote access and reduces IT costs; Sprint Managed MobilitySM Services, which helps businesses manage wireless services and devices with the degree of customization, control and security used to manage other assets like laptops; Wireless Data Service Level Agreements, which back the performance of Sprint's wireless network with service credits; and Sprint Business Mobility Framework, a new solution to meet the advanced mobility requirements of business customers by extending corporate applications to mobile workers and expanding the power of those applications with location-based services, messaging and geographic notifications.

Motorola CDMA2000 1X SoftSwitch Moves KDDI To IP Based Network

Motorola CDMA2000 1X SoftSwitch Moves KDDI To IP Based Network TOKYO - July 18, 2005 - Motorola, Inc. announced today that it has received orders in the 2nd quarter for its CDMA2000 1X SoftSwitch from the country’s leading carrier for 3G cellular phone services, KDDI. The SoftSwitch provided by Motorola will be used as the core switch in KDDI’s CDMA2000 1X network.

Significantly more compact than conventional circuit switches, the Motorola SoftSwitch (MSS) minimizes the space and power required by telecom carriers. With this, significant reductions in capital investments and operating expenses are realized, leading to an increased competitive advantage for carriers in an increasingly competitive global market.

“To continue providing cutting edge solutions and services to our customers, we have been aggressively upgrading our network infrastructure. We expect that by replacing the existing circuit switches with the Motorola SoftSwitch, it will allow us to reduce operational costs on our network side,” said Tadashi Onodera, president and chairman of KDDI Corporation.

“Motorola continues to work closely with forward thinking operators such as KDDI to shape their networks,” said Simon Leung, regional president, Motorola Asia Pacific. “The award of this contract shows that the Motorola SoftSwitch itself has been highly valued by KDDI, and at the same time reflects their trust in Motorola over the past years.”

In April 2002, KDDI began its nationwide deployment of CDMA2000 1X, a 3G cellular service, on Motorola’s cdmaOne network. Since then, Motorola has played a vital role in building KDDI’s wireless mobile network as the sole vendor of CDMA2000 1X RAN systems.

The MSS platform has been deployed as a full-featured serving MSC in greenfield, expansion and legacy switch replacement environments. The ability to provide telecom carriers a smooth migration without negatively affecting existing systems is a key driver behind its continuing success. Today, MSS is already looking to the needs of 9 telecom carriers with contracted capacity to serve over 18 million subscribers from over 8 countries and territories worldwide.

When this network is completed, it will enable delivery of advanced broadband mobile services in Vietnam.

Under terms of the contract, Nortel will be the infrastructure supplier for what is expected to be Vietnam's first nationwide wireless broadband network. This network will use CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) technology, which is designed to compete with wireline broadband data speeds.

"We are pleased with awarding the network contract to Nortel," said Dennis Lui, chief executive officer, Hutchison Telecommunications International Limited, the parent company of Hutchison Telecom Vietnam. "With Nortel's advanced telecommunications technology, combined with our marketing and operational expertise, we will be well-positioned to establish a leading operation in a telecom market that has huge growth potential."

"We chose Nortel for this solution because of its proven track record in deploying wireless broadband networks across the globe," said Dr. Pham Ngoc Lang, chairman of the Board of Management, Hanoi Telecom. "We are confident that their experience will help us fast-track communication infrastructure development in Vietnam."

Hutchison Telecom Vietnam and Hanoi Telecom entered into a Business Cooperation Contract in July 2004 to build, construct and operate a CDMA2000 network in Vietnam.

"This strategic win emphasizes our commitment to working with Hutchison Telecom Vietnam and Hanoi Telecom to bring the benefits of wireless communications to a broader section of Vietnamese society," said Chang-Lung Ng, managing director, Nortel Vietnam. Japan's Leading Wireless Operator KDDI To Launch International Roaming Based On Syniverse Technologies UniRoam(SM) Solution

Japan''s Leading Wireless Operator KDDI To Launch International Roaming Based On Syniverse Technologies UniRoam(SM) Solution TAMPA, Fla.--July 13, 2005--Syniverse Technologies, a leading provider of mission-critical technology services to wireless telecommunications companies worldwide, and KDDI, Japan's leading fixed line and mobile phone service provider, today announced the launch of interstandard, international roaming service between KDDI's CDMA network and GSM networks, enabled by Syniverse's UniRoam service.

UniRoam is a technology solution developed by Syniverse that enables seamless roaming between CDMA and GSM networks, which are technically incompatible. UniRoam service eliminates the need to subscribe to a second wireless service through a GSM carrier while traveling where CDMA service is unavailable. The solution allows a subscriber to use their existing wireless phone number to make and receive calls while roaming and have those calls appear on their regular monthly bill.

Syniverse provides the necessary signaling conversion and translation, number mapping between CDMA and GSM networks, as well as billing data conversion, web tools for customer provisioning and troubleshooting, and 24x7 customer support, while leaving the roaming business arrangements to the CDMA operator and a GSM sponsor operator of its choosing.

"With the launch of UniRoam service, KDDI continues to lead the Japanese market in roaming capabilities for subscribers," said Kazuhiko Masuda, KDDI general manager - cellular global business development and planning. "This pioneering technology breaks the limitations of roaming between GSM and CDMA markets. We are especially pleased to offer our subscribers the ability to roam seamlessly from Japan to Europe and other GSM countries."

"Syniverse already provides KDDI with a full suite of CDMA roaming services, so it was a natural extension of our relationship to deliver this highly valued interstandard roaming service," said Dennis Ng, Syniverse vice president - Asia Pacific. "By deploying our UniRoam service, KDDI will be offering business subscribers a valuable productivity tool and leisure travelers will appreciate the convenience of making and receiving calls using their existing phone numbers."

Sprint Begins Launch Of EV-DO Wireless High-Speed Data Service

Sprint Begins Launch Of EV-DO Wireless High-Speed Data Service OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — 07/07/2005 — Sprint has begun launch of a new wireless high-speed data network that will provide mobile Internet access to about 150 million people in at least 60 metropolitan areas across the nation by early 2006. Sprint's new wireless high-speed data (EV-DO, Evolution Data Optimized) service, devices and applications will change how and where business is done and offer consumers an enhanced mobile multi-media experience.

Sprint is rolling out its EV-DO service initially in business corridors with high wireless-data traffic demands, such as airports and central business districts, followed by broader metropolitan areas. Service will begin during July in major airports and business districts in 34 markets. As the roll-out continues, access will be available to approximately 92 million people in 14 broadly deployed metropolitan areas in the third quarter. By the fourth quarter, another 36 metro areas will be launched, so that service will be available to approximately 143 million people. By early 2006, the high-speed wireless data service will be available on a variety of devices throughout at least 200 urban and suburban markets in approximately 60 metropolitan areas.

Information on Sprint's EV-DO service availability, devices and coverage plans can be found at www.sprint.com/wirelesshighspeeddata.

Sprint also revealed a flexible pricing plan for two EV-DO-ready Sprint PCS Connection CardsTM – the AirCard® 580 by Sierra Wireless and the Merlin S620TM by Novatel WirelessTM – that are available through business sales and retail channels. For business customers, pricing starts at $40 per month for 40MB with a price cap at $90 for those months when customers use the service more. Sprint also will offer an unlimited access plan through business sales channels for $80 per month. All prices exclude taxes and certain Sprint surcharges. For complete information regarding consumer pricing plans starting at $40 per month, please visit your nearest Sprint Store or log on to www.sprintpcs.com for details. These cards, which operate on the 1xRTT Sprint nationwide PCS network when outside of EV-DO service areas, have a suggested retail price of $249.99 less contract credits and instant savings.

Sprint plans to introduce EV-DO handsets and applications for consumers and business customers in the fourth quarter.

"Satisfying and meeting customer needs for mobile data service is all about having the broadest range of connectivity choices and providing the best overall mobile data experience," said Len Lauer, president and chief operating officer – Sprint. "The EV-DO service launch increases the ways Sprint customers can connect when mobile and augments a unique remote access service portfolio consisting of the nationwide PCS 1xRTT network and more than 19,000 Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) access points in prime locations. Through network convergence, customers can get all the access solutions they need by harnessing the benefits of Sprint's diverse wireless networks."

The Sprint EV-DO service provides a broadband-like wireless data experience that is up to 10 times faster than 1xRTT service, with average download speeds of 400-700 kbps and a peak rate of up to 2.0 Mbps. Users can experience faster downloading when accessing the Internet and retrieving e-mails, including large attachments and other bandwidth-intensive applications. The EV-DO service enables improved audio and video capabilities for entertainment services, like streaming TV and music; gaming; video conferencing; and enhanced messaging.

The new EV-DO service is expected to fuel additional growth in Sprint's growing lineup of wireless data services, an area in which Sprint is an industry leader. Wireless data revenue grew 14 percent for Sprint in the first quarter 2005 and represented approximately 10 percent of customer service revenue.

"Mobile users are demanding more than just network speed, but want a combined offering that includes a fast, reliable and cost-efficient service with business services and applications that drive value into their businesses," said Phillip Redman, vice president of Research – Gartner, Inc. "Most companies want a partner that is interested in helping them with the new technology and provide value-added services beyond just being a technology provider."

The high-speed wireless service launch is an outgrowth of ongoing network improvements. Last December, Sprint announced a multi-year commitment of $3 billion dollars for network enhancements, which included the EV-DO service as well as its next generation Release A upgrade.

U.S. Cellular Introduces SpeedTalk

U.S. Cellular Introduces SpeedTalk CHICAGO, Ill. , July 7, 2005 – U.S. Cellular today introduced SpeedTalk, a service that enables cell phones to function as "walkie-talkies" between groups of two or up to 20 people simultaneously. SpeedTalk is U.S. Cellular's first "press-to-talk" product and operates over the company's highly regarded digital network.

"Press to talk has been around for several years, and today is most popular among contractors and delivery services," said Alan D. Ferber, U.S. Cellular vice president of marketing and sales operations. "Its greatest limitation has always been its lack of reliability everywhere mobile users go. But combining the latest technology with our extensive network gives SpeedTalk the potential to be a huge success with families – including teenagers."

SpeedTalk operates on U.S. Cellular's all-digital network, so it is extremely reliable, even in most buildings and homes. The higher call quality, smaller handsets and unlimited minutes provided by SpeedTalk now mean that press-to-talk functionality will go mainstream.

"A lot of calls are made just to relay simple pieces of information – a date or time, a location, a name or a number," Ferber said. " SpeedTalk provides all the value of voice with the speed of instant messaging, and you can even speak to entire groups instantly."

SpeedTalk uses a speakerphone but may be switched to the cell phone's earpiece or a hands-free attachment for greater privacy. By pushing a button on the outside of the phone, a list of individuals or group contacts appears on the screen. The caller then presses and holds the SpeedTalk button and, at the sound of a beep, may begin speaking to up to 20 people, anywhere in U.S. Cellular's 25-state network. New groups or contacts may be added either through the phone or via the internet at www.usccspeedtalk.com. Any changes will show up instantly on the phones.

U.S. Cellular SpeedTalk is offered on a Kyocera model KX440 and an LG model UX4750 flip-phone. "These phones are lightweight – about four ounces -- with many of the same features and functions as models that customers are already familiar with," Ferber said.

SpeedTalk is now available with plans starting at $49.95 for 1,000 anytime cellular minutes and unlimited SpeedTalk minutes. Current customers can switch to unlimited SpeedTalk plans without signing a new contract, and those on certain business plans can add unlimited SpeedTalk minutes to their existing plans for $10 per line.

For more information on SpeedTalk phones, plans and accessories visit the company's Web site at www.uscellular.com/speedtalk.

Lucent Technologies Increases Capacity Of Verizon Dominicana’s 3G Network To Support One Million Subscribers

Lucent Technologies Increases Capacity Of Verizon Dominicana’s 3G Network To Support One Million Subscribers SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – July 5, 2005 – Lucent Technologies and Verizon Dominicana today announced that they have increased the capacity of the operator’s third-generation (3G) CDMA2000® network in the Dominican Republic to support one million subscribers within a single mobile switching center (MSC). This is the first Lucent MSC outside of the United States to support one million subscribers -- improving network efficiency and reducing operational expenses and real estate costs for Verizon Dominicana.

This milestone is part of an ongoing network expansion project that began when Lucent first deployed the CDMA2000 network for Verizon Dominicana in 2003. Lucent continues to expand the capacity and coverage of the network with various upgrades and enhancements, while Lucent Worldwide Services is providing network installation and maintenance services. “The continued expansion of our CDMA2000 network reinforces Verizon Dominicana’s leading position and commitment to continuously improving network quality and customer satisfaction,” said Jorge Ivan Ramirez, president of Verizon Dominicana.

“By minimizing the need for additional real estate for more MSCs and other expenses associated with deploying new MSCs such as personnel to monitor the equipment, we are becoming more efficient,” added Isaac Madera, director of network planning for Verizon Dominicana.

“We are pleased to partner with Verizon Dominicana as they continue to expand their 3G network, after having successfully collaborated on the initial deployment of this advanced voice and high-speed data network back in 2003,” said Bill Hopson, Lucent Technologies sales vice president. “This latest milestone showcases our commitment to protect Verizon Dominicana’s existing infrastructure investment and help them maintain their leadership position in the Dominican Republic market.”

Gameloft Brings ""War of the Worlds"" To Verizon Wireless Get It Now Customers BEDMINSTER, NJ and NEW YORK. NY — July 1, 2005 — They’re already here… and you’re one of them. Verizon Wireless, the nation’s leading wireless service provider, and Gameloft, a leading developer and publisher of games for mobile phones, are bringing the reality of the summer blockbuster War of the Worlds directly to Verizon Wireless Get It Now® customers. Inspired by the Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks Pictures movie in theaters now, the War of the Worlds mobile game from Gameloft puts players in charge of taking over the planet city by city.

Mobile gamers battle their way through 13 action-packed levels set in five different environments as a deadly tripod inspired by the film and its universe. To win the War of the Worlds, players must finish each level in a limited amount of time and complete the primary objectives: reaching checkpoints within time limits, inflicting mass destruction and collecting humans. The human military forces will fight back with everything they have – weapons, helicopters, planes and boats – while land mines try to slow players down as they attempt to wreak havoc on Earth.

As players continue, Tripods overcome Osaka, London, New Jersey and New York. After each level, a debriefing helps players analyze their performance by providing a tally of various stats. Players’ total bonus will establish their rank in the game.

War of the Worlds is located in the getGAMES shopping aisle of the Get It Now virtual store. Customers can purchase the game for $2.99 monthly access or $6.49 for unlimited use purchase. Customers can try their hand at battling the world by downloading War of the Worlds on select Get It Now-enabled phones, including the Kyocera KX444 and KX2; LG VX6100, VX7000 and VX8000; Motorola V265 and V710; and Samsung SCH-a650 and SCH-a670.

ZTE To Install Ghana´s First CDMA2000 Network

ZTE To Install Ghana´s First CDMA2000 Network July 1, 2005 -- Ghana is to receive its first CDMA communications network following a contract signed between ZTE Corporation, China´s largest listed telecommunications equipment manufacturer and leading wireless solutions provider, and Kasapa Telecom Ltd, a subsidiary of Hutchison Telecom.

Under the contract, signed this week in Accra, ZTE is the sole vendor responsible for the construction of a new nationwide digital network based on CDMA2000 technology. The network will cover the three important cities of Accra, Tema and Kumasi, and will provide the people of Ghana with affordable voice and data telecommunications solutions for mobile, home and business.

"ZTE´s integrated services delivered on a single CDMA2000 1X network give us an efficiency nobody can match," said Mr Robert Palitz, managing director of Kasapa Telecom. "Every Kasapa customer knows our policy is to share efficiencies with the customers. Kasapa and ZTE will make wonderful things happen in Ghana."

Africa is an important market for ZTE: the Corporation´s products have already been deployed in more than 14 countries, including Egypt, Nigeria, Tunisia, Kenya, Zambia, Algeria, and Ethiopia. In September 2004, ZTE constructed a WCDMA network in Tunisia and, this year, will install a nationwide GSM network for Algeria.

"This is the first time that ZTE has worked in Ghana and we are proud to deliver the nation´s first CDMA network," said Ms. Zhao Xiaoping, chief representative of ZTE´s Ghana office. "We believe that our CDMA technology and solutions are ideal for the African market and that this new network will significantly improve telecommunications in Ghana. We look forward to bringing the benefits of our technology to the people of Ghana."

To date, ZTE is the only Chinese vendor with a complete package of independently developed base stations and switching systems with self-owned brands in the field of CDMA products. By the end of 2004, ZTE had deployed 20 million lines of CDMA in 50 countries around the world.
