Telstra Mobile Broadband Growth Fuels 3G Data Services

Telstra Mobile Broadband Growth Fuels 3G Data Services March 29, 2005 -- Telstra Mobile Broadband data plans are proving a big hit in the 3G business market with the customer base growing at nearly 50 per cent month-on-month since launch in November 2004.

In a speech to the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce today, Telstra's Group Managing Director of Technology Innovation and Products, Mr Ted Pretty, said the response to Telstra Mobile Broadband had exceeded expectations.

"Telstra is delighted with the market's response to its mobile broadband offer as it clearly indicates there is a strong demand for premium wireless data services," Mr Pretty said.

"The Telstra Mobile Broadband plans have been very well received by the market and we are ahead of forecast.

"Importantly, Telstra Mobile Broadband data traffic has also continued to climb, growing 51 per cent month-on-month, since we launched the service."

Mr Pretty said demand had been particularly strong among companies with large sales teams who needed to access information while they were on the road. It was also proving to be popular with professionals wanting to access corporate networks and field workers accessing online job details for repair and maintenance work.

Heinz and Partner lawyer, Mr Andrew Douglas, said his company had adopted Telstra Mobile Broadband to assist staff that spend a lot of time visiting clients and travelling between offices in Sydney, Melbourne and regional Victoria. "Telstra Mobile Broadband has been fantastic for me. It has been an enormous help in some critical times," Mr Douglas said.

"Often the advice you are giving is very much on the run because a situation is happening before you. To be able to get into case law and access documents whenever I am in a coverage area has been a huge boon for me," Mr Douglas said. Telstra Mobile Broadband is a 3G data technology that operates on Telstra's CDMA 1x EV-DO network. It offers customers access to the internet, or remote access to a company's network, using compatible mobile devices such as laptops and PDAs.

With data rates bursting up to 2.4 megabit per second and typical speeds between 300 -600 kilobits per second when in a CDMA 1xEV-DO coverage area, Telstra Mobile Broadband plans offer connections up to 10 times faster than dial up modems.

Mobile broadband coverage via CDMA 1xEV-DO is currently available through more than 400 CDMA base stations around the country, providing service to almost three million people. By June this year, another 300 CDMA base stations are expected to provide the technology, giving 5.3 million people living in selected metropolitan areas and regional centres access to mobile broadband coverage.

Mr Pretty said Telstra Mobile Broadband plans give customers seamless roaming from the CDMA 1xEV-DO network to the CDMA 1X mobile data network, which offers data speeds bursting up to 153kbps.

"Together, these networks cover 98 percent of the Australian population and over 1.6 million square kilometres," Mr Pretty said.

Customers with a WiFi enabled device can also use their Telstra Mobile Broadband service in more than 450 Telstra Wireless (WiFi) Hotspots. "We are sending a strong signal to the market that Telstra is at the forefront of the 3G evolution in Australia," Mr Pretty said.

"Telstra is already meeting the needs of business customers through its 3G technology and later this year we will introduce rich, 3G multimedia content over our 3GSM network for the benefit of our 3G mobile phone customers.

"The success of our mobile broadband service is a good indicator that our consumer based 3GSM voice and content mobile phone offer will be well received by the market."

Nortel Outlines CDMA 1xEV-DO Revision A Strategy

Nortel Outlines CDMA 1xEV-DO Revision A Strategy NEW ORLEANS, LA — March 15, 2005 — Nortel, a global telecommunications leader in wireless infrastructure and advanced third-generation (3G) technologies, plans to offer CDMA2000 1xEV-DO (evolution data optimized) Revision A (DO Rev A) technology designed to allow CDMA network operators, including Verizon Wireless, to increase revenues through improved high speed data services.

Announced today at CTIA Wireless 2005, the largest wireless tradeshow in North America, Nortel's DO Rev A technology will allow CDMA network operators to provide more feature-rich wireless services such as interactive 3D gaming, mobile music, and a variety of IP services including Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and high-speed file transfers. It will also support virtual real-time interactive access to services such as push-to-talk, mobile television, and video telephony.

"Given the tremendous success and momentum of 1xEV-DO, Nortel has embarked on an aggressive program to deliver 1xEV-DO Rev A," said Richard Lowe, president, CDMA, Nortel. "Nortel's DO Rev A technology will allow operators to serve more customers on the same spectrum while delivering VoIP and other advanced multimedia services that enhance the end user's experience and increase subscriber loyalty."

The DO Rev A technology delivers peak data rate bursts up to 3.1 Mbps (megabits per second) on the forward link and up to 1.8 Mbps on the reverse link. DO Rev A operates in the 1.25 MHz channel and is optimized for packet data service that provides one of the lowest costs per bit when compared to other cellular technologies.

"DO Revision A is the logical next step for us to consider as we pursue our goal to migrate our 1xEV-DO 3G network to deliver the latest applications and services to our customers," said Ed Salas, vice president of network planning, Verizon Wireless. "EV-DO Rev A fits in with our mantra of providing our business and individual customers superior voice and data networks in the U.S."

Nortel is planning live market trials with Verizon Wireless beginning in 2006.

DO Rev A technology builds on Nortel's leadership position in CDMA and extends the scope of its investment protection strategy. Nortel's CDMA base stations can be upgraded to DO Rev A through simple modular upgrades, allowing all other existing hardware and software to be reused. Nortel currently supplies EV-DO to 11 out of the 17 operators that have commercially launched across the globe. Nortel was the first to commercially offer DO in South America with Vesper, the first in Central America with BSI Guatemala, the first in Australia with Telstra and the first to commercially offer DO in 450 MHz in Eastern Europe with Eurotel.

DO Rev A allows operators to manage various users and applications with different levels of priority, making it possible to offer tiered services and multiple pricing options for different types of services and applications. Operators also can make additional security enhancements by using authentication mechanisms that allow the operator to identify users and give specific access rights to services based on the user's profile.

DO Rev A has been approved by the 3GPP2 Technical Specification Group (TSG-C). Nortel has been a major contributor to the development of 1xEV-DO Rev. 0 and Rev. A standards in 3GPP2. Nortel has proposed key concepts to the standards that improve packing efficiency for High Rate Packet Data (HRPD) Air interface. Nortel was also instrumental in providing leadership in the development process of 1xEV-DO Revision A physical layer.

Nortel is an industry innovator and at the forefront of all broadband access technologies, including wide area cellular, wireline and wireless LAN. Nortel has designed, installed and launched more than 300 wireless networks in over 70 countries. Nortel was the industry's first supplier with wireless networks operating in all advanced radio technologies (GSM/GPRS/EDGE, CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO, UMTS and WLAN), and is the only end-to-end provider of all next generation wireless solutions, as well as edge and core network solutions for IP, ATM and optical transport.

Telstra Utilizes Nortel CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Technology For Commercial Launch Of High-Speed Mobile Broadband Service

Telstra Utilizes Nortel CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Technology For Commercial Launch Of High-Speed Mobile Broadband Service SYDNEY, Australia – March 15, 2005 – Telstra, Australia’s largest telecommunications and information services company, is the first to deliver mobile broadband to Australians based on CDMA2000* 1xEV-DO (evolution-data optimized) technology from Nortel.

Launched in November 2004, Telstra Mobile Broadband provides secure remote access to the Internet or company networks from mobile devices such as laptops and PDAs. The launch follows Nortel's initial 1xEV-DO deployment in the business districts of Australia’s capital cities and major regional centers. The new wireless service delivers broadband speeds equal to wireline DSL, averaging 300-600 kilobits (Kbps) with maximums of 2.4 Megabits (Mbps).

Telstra is working with the state government of Victoria to extend the service into key regional centers. Recently, Victoria’s minister for information and communications, Marsha Thomson, announced that Telstra will spend a further A$6.5 million (US$5.15 million) to expand the 1xEV-DO network supplied by Nortel.

Telstra is currently focusing on the Australian business community, providing its Mobile Broadband service through several simple, flexible and cost-effective plans.

“Early market response has been well above expectation,” said Paul Thomas, Telstra’s General Manager of Wireless Data Solutions. “We’ve had strong traction in the professional services sector, particularly the banking industry and companies with a field-based workforce.”

Responses to the service were also very positive during a recent nationwide road show demonstration of Telstra Mobile Broadband to 1,200 Telstra Shop personnel, dealers and retailers who were particularly impressed by EV-DO’s speed and performance.

“Next generation CDMA 2000 1xEV-DO technology has raised the bar for delivering high-speed wireless data access with the high levels of security and reliability essential in today’s fast-moving and highly competitive global business environment,” said Steve Wood, president, Australia and New Zealand, Nortel. “As well as offering a better user experience, 1xEV-DO can help companies and government departments lower the cost of providing remote access services by serving as an organization’s single remote access solution.”

“Security is also easily facilitated,” Wood said. “Originally developed for military applications, CDMA provides a strong platform for security features. Most enterprises and government agencies already use virtual private networks (VPNs) to encrypt data traffic and the same VPNs can now be used with 1xEV-DO, providing additional cost savings.”

Nortel has designed, deployed and launched more than 300 wireless networks in more than 70 countries. Nortel was the first industry supplier to have wireless networks operating in all advanced radio technologies (GSM/GPRS/EDGE, CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO, UMTS and WLAN), and is the only end-to-end supplier of all new-generation wireless solutions.

Motorola Expands Capacity Of Multimedia Messaging Service Center (MMSC) To Support More Than 40 Million Subscribers

Motorola Expands Capacity Of Multimedia Messaging Service Center (MMSC) To Support More Than 40 Million Subscribers NEW ORLEANS, ARLINGTON HTS, IL and BEDMINSTER, NJ — March 15, 2005 — Motorola, Inc. has expanded the capacity of its Multimedia Messaging Service Center (MMSC) to provide scalable growth to support more than 40 million subscribers. Motorola’s scalable MMSC architecture allows the product to cost effectively serve the needs of regional as well as national carriers.

In addition to increased capacity and throughput, Motorola’s latest MMSC enhancements enable video messaging and picture messaging interoperability. This gives mobile subscribers the power to choose what medium or combination of media they want to use to communicate – video, voice, images, audio clips, video clips or instant messaging – all available simultaneously, in real-time and in a single blended message.

Motorola’s MMSC allows for effortless transfer of multimedia information from various MMS-enabled handsets or devices across CDMA, GSM, EDGE, UMTS and IP networks to provide full interoperability between multiple e-mail users on the Internet, and inter-carrier multimedia messaging. It is another step toward achieving Motorola’s vision of seamless mobility – giving people the content and information they want regardless of where they are or which device they are using.

According to Senior Analyst XJ Wang from The Yankee Group, multimedia-based messaging, entertainment and information service revenue will grow to $20 billion by 2008 in Western Europe alone. MMS has evolved beyond person-to-person (P2P) to become a multimedia entertainment and information delivery channel. Application-to-person (A2P) MMS provides content- and event-driven alerts, which are normally more time-sensitive than P2P MMS. As adoption of A2P continues to accelerate, this change will create additional performance and throughput requirements on the operator’s MMS infrastructure.

“The high capacity and rich feature set of Motorola’s MMSC is designed to keep pace with an operator’s needs as its subscriber base grows and the types of messaging proliferate, making it an attractive solution for operators whether they have one million or 40 million subscribers,” said John Puma, director of Messaging Solutions for Motorola Networks. “Motorola’s MMSC supports operators in generating new revenue streams through enabling in-demand applications such as e-mail, picture and video messaging.”

“We recently deployed Motorola’s MMSC solution, and have been very pleased with its performance on our network,” said Ed Salas, vice president of network planning for Verizon Wireless. “Motorola’s MMSC solution provides a quality experience for our customers and gives us the capacity to meet growing demand for multimedia messaging.”

The new software also breaks down the typical communications barriers that exist today when trying to send communications to and from different devices. Using integrated advanced transcoding technology from Adamind, the MMSC automatically tailors content to the specifications of the network and device hardware. This allows users to efficiently send multimedia content to virtually any mobile network and any device. Motorola is actively engaged in interoperability testing of handsets with leading operators.

QUALCOMM Demonstrates Wide Variety Of Enhancements Enabled By CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. A At CTIA In New Orleans

QUALCOMM Demonstrates Wide Variety Of Enhancements Enabled By CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. A At CTIA In New Orleans NEW ORLEANS — MARCH 14, 2005 — QUALCOMM Incorporated, pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today began offering attendees to CTIA Wireless 2005 in New Orleans the opportunity to see live demonstrations of the significant improvements in wireless services enabled by CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO Rev A. QUALCOMM will be demonstrating such converged IP-based (Internet protocol) capabilities as VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) services over EV-DO, EV-DO Rev. A higher data rates, pilot interference cancellation (PIC), and Platinum Multicast. These leading capabilities enable wireless operators to cost-effectively offer a wide variety of compelling voice and data services tailored to segmented user needs. QUALCOMM's demonstrations can be seen at Booth Number 2631, Hall C, at the CTIA show March 14-16.

“With Rev. A, the capabilities of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO continue to set the benchmark for wireless wide area IP Systems,” said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, QUALCOMM CEO-elect. “The rich variety of multimedia and IP-based services — both voice and data — enabled by Rev. A will allow our handset, infrastructure and operator partners to drive the competitive landscape as the convergence of mobile wireless, computing and consumer electronics change consumers' high-tech lifestyles around the globe.”

Support for VoIP Services

Operators implementing Rev. A throughout their network will be able to take advantage of wireless IP-based capabilities and enjoy the cost and flexibility advantages of an IP-based system well into the future. Operators choosing this development path will benefit from economies of scale and high-volume cost curves which take advantage of IP network elements and distributed network architectures. The ability to offer VoIP services over Rev. A-based networks will profoundly enhance operators' service offerings by enabling the combination of high-quality voice with a wide variety of applications, such as interactive 3D gaming among large groups of players, instant messaging with full multimedia content and video telephony.

Also, over Rev. A the IP airlink, resources can be used more flexibly — e.g., downloading high-quality multimedia content to user devices overnight while using the airlink resources for VoIP and interactive high-speed data applications during the day. This means operators will realize an improved use of spectrum and network flexibility by being able to tradeoff capacity and QoS capabilities, as well as monetizing high-speed data during voice idle times.

Rev. A Higher Data Rates & Higher Capacity

Rev. A offers improved peak data rates on both the forward and reverse links. On the forward link, peak data rates increase to 3.1 Mbps, while reverse link peak speeds have increased to 1.8 Mbps. Rev. A offers higher sector capacity within the same 1.25 MHz carrier, allowing operators to support more users and richer applications. Rev. A has twice the sector capacity of Release 0 on the reverse link and 1.2 times sector capacity on the forward link. Rev. A is fully backward compatible and interoperable with deployed EV-DO networks and devices around the world. Moreover, it builds on previous EV-DO enhancements, which enable operators to offer exciting new services and significantly differentiate their wireless offerings from their competitors.

Pilot Interference Cancellation

QUALCOMM continues to find new approaches to increasing system capacity and network efficiency for CDMA-based networks - all the while lowering operating costs for service providers. PIC employs advanced techniques to reduce interference on the CDMA reverse link. It improves the reverse link capacity by removing the pilot interference, which improves the signal-to-noise ratio. By removing pilot signal interference, an operator can increase capacity by an estimated 15%-20% for VoIP applications. Future products supporting Rev. A will introduce full interference cancellation, thus approaching the ultimate theoretical capacity of a multiple-access reverse link.

Platinum Multicast

Platinum Multicast is proposed as the next evolutionary step of EV-DO multicast technologies. Platinum Multicast provides an extremely cost-effective method for wireless operators to deliver a multitude of video and audio channels to a large subscriber population over Rev. A-based cellular networks coupled with a content delivery system such as the MediaFLO media distribution system, with more than three times the capacity of Gold Multicast. This higher capacity translates into more channels of content or higher resolution content with the same number of channels. Higher capacity also results in a proportionately lower cost per bit transferred over the air. Operators who deploy Rev. A networks will have the ability to offer Platinum Multicast with a software upgrade. This smooth migration path enables EV-DO operators to stay at the forefront of offering the highest-performance and lowest-cost cellular services with broad appeal to mass consumers. (See related Platinum Multicast/FLO Technology announcement from QUALCOMM on Oct. 12, 2004).

Rev. A is supported by QUALCOMM's CSM6800 and MSM6800 chipsets. Rev. A features are backwards compatible to earlier CDMA-based systems thereby preserving operators' initial CDMA system investments - providing operators a low risk migration path for existing systems.

Triple Play: Nokia Adds More Power To Its CDMA Handset Lineup With Three All-Star Rookies

Triple Play: Nokia Adds More Power To Its CDMA Handset Lineup With Three All-Star Rookies NEW ORLEANS, La. - March 14, 2005 - With the first day of spring less than a week away, baseball spring training is in full swing, and America's premier wireless trade show, CTIA Wireless 2005, is getting under way. Today at CTIA Wireless 2005, Nokia unveiled a trio of new CDMA handsets that will add increased depth to Nokia's already strong CDMA roster. These devices include the Nokia 2115i phone, an affordable handset perfect for first-time and prepaid wireless users, the Nokia 3155 phone, a mid-tier folding phone that delivers a winning combination of design and features, and the Nokia 6155 phone, a well-featured folding camera phone designed for users who want to maximize their wireless experience.

Nokia 2115i: The salary-cap champ

Leading off the new Nokia CDMA lineup is the Nokia 2115i. While engineered for affordability, it boasts a strong selection of features. Voice dialing and voice commands allow users to make calls and access their most-used functions with the power of speech. A built-in speakerphone keeps hands free for other tasks, and allows multiple people to join in on calls. Optional Xpress-on(TM) color covers allow users to show their individuality, and for all those dark nights, a flashlight is built in to help find dropped change or a hard-to-locate keyhole.

The compact 3-ounce Nokia 2115i is expected to be available during the second quarter of 2005.

Nokia 3155: Major league power in the middle of the lineup

In the on-deck circle is the Nokia 3155, which combines a 262K color display and stylish folding design with a price point that offers users maximum value for their money. The Nokia 3155 features dual displays, including a large 128 x 160 pixel primary display, 12MB of user memory for images, downloadable applications, MP3 ringtones, PDA information and more, and voice functionality including voice dialing, voice commands and voice memos. Weighing in at less than 4 ounces, the Nokia 3155 is expected to debut during the third quarter of 2005.

Nokia 6155: All-around performer and rookie-of-the-year candidate

Hitting in the cleanup spot is the Nokia 6155, a compact fold-style camera phone featuring a wide selection of powerful wireless features. For high-quality imaging, the Nokia 6155 phone features a 1-megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom, built-in LED flash and support for video recording and playback at a full 15 frames per second. The Nokia 6155 features dual TFT color screens, including a 262K color primary display that makes viewing streaming video content or using advanced downloadable applications with 3D graphics and animation a true multimedia experience.

An available mapping, routing and navigation system provides Nokia 6155 users with high quality graphical maps and turn-by-turn instructions via text, voice and graphics. The system also includes an extensive list of points of interest - such as restaurants, bars and hotels - and can provide not only directions to these locations, but send information to friends via text messaging and directly dial the establishment from within the navigation application.

The Nokia 6155 also supports enhanced voice command functionality and a multitude of ring tone options. Enhanced Voice Commands allow the Nokia 6155 to recognize speech for dialing and often-used commands without the need for the user to record 'tags' to train the device first. For the highest-quality ring tones, the Nokia 6155 supports 64 voice polyphonic ring tones, true musical tones in MP3 and AAC formats, and even video ring tones that add visual excitement to incoming calls.

The 4.4-ounce Nokia 6155 is expected to become available during the fourth quarter of 2005.

Nortel Increases Operator Revenue Potential With New Converged Mobility Solution

Nortel Increases Operator Revenue Potential With New Converged Mobility Solution NEW ORLEANS – March 14, 2005 – Nortel announced a CDMA WLAN Converged Mobility solution designed to bridge CDMA wireless networks and wireless local area networks (WLANs) to provide a seamless communication experience to end users. This solution will allow CDMA operators to extend the reach of cellular 3G networks and deliver services more cost effectively by leveraging WLAN networks.

It will allow the operator to deliver a consistent communications experience between CDMA and WLAN networks and allow end users to roam seamlessly between these networks and enjoy feature rich Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)-based services beyond voice, including video calling, video conferencing, short messaging service, instant messaging, e-mail, Web access and other multimedia services – all from one device and one phone number. It will also manage subscriber billing information across networks so that end users can receive one, consolidated bill.

“Operators are looking for innovative solutions that will help squeeze the most value from their existing network investments and offer a more compelling experience to subscribers from any location,” said Richard Lowe, president, CDMA, Nortel. “Our wireless LAN capabilities coupled with our extensive experience in wireless 3G infrastructure will allow operators to increase revenue potential, build customer loyalty and, ultimately, gain competitive advantage.”

Nortel’s WLAN CDMA Converged Mobility solution will be demonstrated at CTIA Wireless 2005 in New Orleans (Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Hall C, Booth #3125) March 14-16. The demonstration will use TABLETmedia’s iFonTM software application on the dual mode device to enable Nortel’s Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) 5200 services.

Nortel’s WLAN CDMA Converged Mobility solution will help decrease operator costs by allowing them to use WLAN access points as an option to deploying CDMA base stations and carriers. Operators can leverage existing Nortel platforms, including Nortel’s Call Server 2000 and MCS 5200, to quickly deploy the solution. In addition, the solution is SIP based and easily integrates into Nortel’s recently announced Converged Multimedia Services (CMS) portfolio. Nortel will be conducting live market trials globally with leading operators across the globe later this year.

The solution builds on Nortel’s leadership in 3G wireless infrastructure technology, proven VoIP expertise, more than five years of R&D investment in SIP multimedia and Nortel’s Enterprise advanced WLAN portfolio.

Skyworks Unveils The Industry's Most Highly Integrated RF Transmit Front-End Modules For CDMA

Skyworks Unveils The Industry''s Most Highly Integrated RF Transmit Front-End Modules For CDMA NEW ORLEANS, Mar 14, 2005 -- Skyworks Solutions, Inc., a global leader in analog, mixed signal and digital semiconductors for mobile communications applications, today introduced the world's most highly integrated RF transmit front-end modules (FEM) for CDMA, supporting both cellular and PCS frequencies. Skyworks was first to introduce FEM solutions, offering the highest degree of front-end integration for GSM/GPRS/EDGE handsets and is now expanding to address CDMA applications.

The SKY77408 and SKY77409 combine the company's best-in-class power amplifier (PA), filter, input/output matching, power detector and duplexer technology into a compact, 5mmx8mm laminate package, saving handset developers significant design time and board space. Nearly half the size of alternative architectures, the new family of CDMA FEMs leverage Skyworks' in-house, low-cost manufacturing capabilities.

"As mobile phone manufacturers increasingly add multimedia and high-speed data services to meet subscriber demand, smaller and more power efficient front-end technology is critical," said Brian M. Daly, Skyworks marketing director for RF Solutions. "Based upon the compelling benefits of our new CDMA FEMs, we look to mirror the tremendous success of our GSM/GPRS/EDGE portfolio which has already shipped more than 40 million units following its debut just two years ago."

About the SKY77408/SKY77409

The SKY77408 and SKY77409 are fully matched, 22-pin surface mount modules that meet the stringent spectral requirements of IS95/IS98 standards up to 25.5 dBm output power, and contain all the circuitry to maximize power detector performance. Integration of the RF front-end greatly simplifies the design of the handset radio, as all critical matching between the filter, PA, power detection and duplexer is optimized within the module. Utilizing Skyworks' proprietary Autosmart(TM) technology, the SKY77408 and SKY77409 greatly improve talk time without external bias control, by significantly reducing the RF loss between the integrated components.

The SKY77408 is designed for TX 824-849 MHz/RX 869-894 MHz frequencies, while the SKY77409 is designed for TX 1850-1910 MHz/RX 1930-1990 MHz frequencies.

Pricing and Availability

The SKY77408 and SKY77409 modules are sampling now and will begin volume production in the third calendar quarter of 2005. In quantities of 10,000, the SKY77408 is priced at $3.00, with the SKY77409 at $3.50.

"Through our direct relationships with the record labels we can deliver new and popular Music Tones to customers every day." Popular Music Tones from T.I.'s Urban Legend album, include:

Sprint offers thousands of Music Tones, real song ringers, from today's hottest hits like T.I.'s "Bring Em Out." Sprint also offers customers who are interested in urban-themed content Urban Stylez, a screen saver category that contains content one would see in the Urban hip-hop culture. Sprint''s Picture MailSM Online Printing Option Expands To Nearly 2,700 Locations Nationwide With Enhanced Retail Services From Fuji Photo Film U.S.A., Inc. OVERLAND PARK, Kan., and NEW ORLEANS (CTIA) — 03/14/2005 — Sprint today announced that several new regional retailers will offer printing services from Fujifilm for Sprint's Picture Mail customers, bringing the number of locations to nearly 2,700. These additional retailers are members of the Fujifilm digital fulfillment network and represent a variety of well-known regional stores, including ShopRite, Longs Drugs, Fred Meyer, Kings Soopers and BiMart. These new stores complement the more than 900 existing retailers already in service, including Sam's Club, Ritz Camera and Wolf Camera.

The retail-printing feature enables Sprint's Picture Mail customers to send digital pictures directly from select Sprint PCS Phones or send their online Picture Mail album to any participating retail photofinisher for printing. Family and friends can also join in the fun by printing the photos they receive via Picture Mail share, utilizing Fujifilm's "Get the Picture Online Service."

"As the quality of pictures captured on camera phones improves, more customers are interested in printing those photos," said Pierre Barbeau, general manager - Picture Mail, Sprint. "By tripling the number of participating retailers, Sprint customers can easily print directly from their handset or online albums and messages to a number of retail stores conveniently located in their neighborhood."

When Sprint customers take pictures with their camera phones, they have the option to search for a retail photofinishing location by zip code, order prints of different sizes and quantities, and pick up their prints in a matter of hours, depending on the retailer's service options. Picture Mail customers and those receiving a Picture Mail share can select a retail photofinisher nearby or one close to a friend or relative, either locally or across the country.

"Consumers are embracing mobile imaging as an extension to their digital and analog imaging lifestyle and want convenient ways to create prints from these captured memories," noted John Prendergast, Vice President, Strategic Business Development, Imaging Group, Fuji Photo Film U.S.A., Inc. "We are very pleased to expand this relationship with Sprint, who has been aggressive in providing innovative features and options to its customers."

Sprint announced America's first one-megapixel camera phone in July 2004, improving the quality of mobile pictures for those who wish to save and print life's everyday moments. Sprint now offers three one-megapixel camera phones. In the past year, Sprint PCS customers have sent more than 300 million picture and video messages over the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network.

Sprint Offers Enterprise-Grade Tool To Bring Wireless And Wireline Connectivity Together For Business Customer

Sprint Offers Enterprise-Grade Tool To Bring Wireless And Wireline Connectivity Together For Business Customer OVERLAND PARK, Kan., and NEW ORLEANS (CTIA) — 03/14/2005 — For the first time, there is a management tool from a telecommunications company that helps erase the artificial line between wireless and wireline communications technologies, giving mobile workers access to information virtually anytime, anywhere, whether they want to use wireless or wired connections.

Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announced Sprint Extended Workplace - a one-of-a-kind remote-access tool that allows users to view a menu of all available access options, point and click to get connected to the Internet, corporate email and other business-critical applications they need to remain productive while away from the office. Because Sprint is the only telecommunications company with nationwide wireline and wireless networks, it is in a unique position to deliver a service that can help customers get more from a growing array of connectivity choices.

Sprint Extended Workplace, an enterprise-grade software client for laptops, simplifies the connection process by identifying and displaying a menu of all available access types and giving the user the option to point, click and get connected, regardless of access type.

Sprint Extended Workplace also helps IT professionals reduce the complexity of supporting employees with complex communication requirements. It provides powerful remote-access management and security features. A Web-based management portal allows IT administrators to establish policies that determine how individual users can log onto the corporate network and what security features must first be in place.

"Sprint is the company best positioned to offer a total networking solution that integrates wireless and wireline services so that remote users can be connected seamlessly and securely, virtually anywhere their jobs take them," said Tim Donahue, vice president - Enterprise Marketing, Sprint Business Solutions. "With availability of Sprint Extended Workplace, we have redefined the environment for remote networking and mobility giving corporate customers the ability to simplify IT administration, control costs and improve the end-user experience."

The launch of the Sprint Extended Workplace helps build on Sprint's strategy to encourage business adoption of wireless and eliminate the artificial line between wireless and wireline services by developing integrated solutions. Along with wireless data Service Level Agreements and the Sprint Managed MobilitySM Services (also announced today), these announcements highlight Sprint's focus on the high-growth wireless area of its business, in addition to Internet-based services and multiproduct bundles. These new services continue a series of "firsts" by Sprint for business customers. Last year, for example, Sprint became the first wireless provider to offer a nationwide Service Level Agreement on its wireless voices services and the first to transmit commercial traffic at 40 Gbps over its IP data network.

Sprint Extended Workplace Features

Today's business environment requires highly flexible and secure remote-access solutions. Sprint Extended Workplace brings together key elements necessary to create a competitive advantage:

• Simplified User Experience - Sprint integrates multiple access types into one easy-to-navigate client interface giving users a single sign-on experience and eliminating the need to remember multiple user names and passwords. Sprint PCS Connection ManagerSM Software identifies all available access types for connected users, allowing them to just click and get connected, reducing the need for Help Desk support.

• Policy Management - IT administrators can use the Web-based portal to define and enforce access and security policies, including activities related to launching third-party applications, enabling access methods based on end-user needs and VPN activation when using specific access types. A centralized reporting tool can help pinpoint potential savings and problems

• Security - An integrated personal firewall option, IP VPN client and antivirus support, and application disablement are all part of the security package provided by Sprint. These features provide protection against hackers, worms and viruses and enforce the use of VPN tunnel for added security.

• Multiple Access Types - Businesses can choose the best-suited access solution for each employee or group from a comprehensive portfolio of Sprint wireless and wireline services, all backed by industry-leading service agreements. Access types include Sprint PCS Vision; Sprint PCS Wi-Fi Access; Sprint Dial IPSM; Sprint PCS Data LinkSM; and "bring-your-own" broadband support for DSL, cable or hotel Ethernet connections. Businesses can also save time and money by dealing with a single provider for all access methods. The use of a Sprint PCS Connection Card™, Wi-Fi card or laptop with embedded Wi-Fi is necessary for some connectivity options.

• Optimization Option - With compression provided with the Optigo client from ByteMobile, workers can complete tasks in less time without tying up the network.

• Support - Sprint provides business customers the convenience of one phone number for access, client and portal support.

• Flexible Pricing - Sprint provides streamlined and predictable monthly recurring charges based on the number of managed seats. Business customers pay a combined monthly access and management fee of $120 per month, per user, for unlimited usage of Sprint PCS Vision and Sprint PCS Wi-Fi Access, as well as local dial IP for $.35 per hour, toll-free dial IP for $2.95 per hour and domestic roaming dial IP for $1.40 per hour.

• Value-Added Services - Sprint offers a complete portfolio of managed network services including intrusion detection, secure email protection and URL filtering. Business customers can easily add additional managed services from Sprint to enhance corporate security and save money.

Sprint Extended Workplace also complements Sprint's eventual deployment of broadband EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) technology across its wireless network. EV-DO will accelerate wireless data speeds up to 10 times faster than on today's network, enabling LAN-like access to critical information. The opportunity for higher-speed data connectivity improves enterprise communications, particularly for a company's mobile workers who require laptop access to corporate applications such as email and Intranets.

Sprint Makes Industry-First Wireless Management Services Available To Businesses

Sprint Makes Industry-First Wireless Management Services Available To Businesses OVERLAND PARK, Kan., and NEW ORLEANS (CTIA) — 03/14/2005 — Sprint today becomes the first major, national telecommunications provider to offer complete, end-to-end management of wireless devices and services for business customers. The introduction of Sprint Managed Mobility Services helps businesses, like Imagistics, manage wireless services and devices with the kind of customization, control and security with which they have previously managed other assets like laptops or desktops.

Sprint Managed MobilitySM Services, now available to all Sprint Business Solutions customers with corporate-purchased accounts, can help save businesses money and time, while making managing wireless easy, predictable and efficient. By simplifying some of the most costly and time-consuming elements of a business customer's wireless strategy, Sprint Managed Mobility Services will help erase the artificial barriers that may exist between wireless and wireline services, unlock the true power of wireless voice and data communications, and ultimately accelerate adoption of wireless services for a wide range of business functions.

The services include device fulfillment, asset management, customized delivery of applications, enhanced billing/pricing management options and a heavy emphasis on device security.

The launch of Sprint Managed Mobility Services helps build on Sprint's strategy to encourage business adoption of wireless, and eliminate the artificial line between wireless and wireline services by developing integrated solutions. Along with wireless data Service Level Agreements and the Sprint Extended Workplace (also announced today), these announcements highlight Sprint's focus on the high-growth wireless area of its business, in addition to Internet-based services and multiproduct bundles. These new services continue a series of "firsts" by Sprint for business customers. Last year, for example, Sprint became the first wireless provider to offer a nationwide Service Level Agreement on its wireless voices services and the first to transmit commercial traffic at 40 Gbps on its IP data network.

"Working with Sprint for managed mobility will deliver a return of investment of more than 100 percent based on overall cost savings and the productivity gains of our mobile workforce," said John Chillock, senior VP of customer service operations, Imagistics. "More efficient management of mobility devices and applications also contributes to our top priority of the continual enhancement of customer satisfaction." Since introducing a mobile workforce in 1989, Imagistics must continually upgrade devices and deploy new mobile applications. For example, manuals and updates for the office equipment they maintain for customers can be viewed in Adobe Acrobat via a mobile device. Additionally, technicians receive and view the most up-to-date information on equipment parts through their mobile device so they can order or check part availability in real-time, contributing quality customer service by fixing an equipment problem on the first visit. Such updates are provided immediately upon availability via "over the air" distribution, thus eliminating the need for technicians to visit the office. This is just one example of how Sprint Managed Mobility Services provides application management. A variety of other capabilities are provided to Imagistics, including:

• Security management - If a technician's mobile device is lost or stolen, the data stored on the device will be erased and the device will be disabled immediately upon Imagistics notifying Sprint. This means critical information does not fall into the wrong hands.

• Provisioning/fulfillment - Sprint manages all orders for initial devices, replacements, upgrades and accessories for Imagistics technicians.

• Asset management - Sprint helps Imagistics manage their mobile devices with the detail, efficiency and security with which they manage laptops and other technology assets.

• Billing management/Sprint PCS Shared MinutesSM - Imagistics has eliminated waste on individual usage plans by pooling Sprint PCS wireless minutes (employees on the same corporate-purchased plan draw from a common pool of anytime minutes). They also now monitor 411 and roaming usage, zero-use devices, etc., and have implemented a policy to reduce such costs. Sprint also provides e-billing, plan maintenance and bill analysis.

"With the recent buzz about mobile security and mobile viruses, it is more important than ever for companies to be proactive about protecting critical mobile data," said Kenny Wyatt, vice president - Integrated Solutions, Sprint. "Sprint Managed Mobility Services is a comprehensive approach to alleviating the complexity enterprises face in device management, security and usage. This end-to-end approach is unsurpassed in the industry and reinforces Sprint's commitment to deliver the most robust portfolio of wireless solutions for our customers."

Sprint Managed Mobility Services also complements Sprint's eventual deployment of broadband EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) technology across its wireless network. As businesses begin deploying a larger number of data-capable wireless devices and applications across EV-DO, Sprint's end-to-end management services will provide significant expertise, potential cost savings and peace of mind. EV-DO will accelerate mobile device data speeds up to 10 times faster than on today's network, enabling LAN-like access to critical information. This means more powerful applications can be shared across wireless and wireline networks - a distinct Sprint advantage.

QUALCOMM And Ericsson Join Together To Support CDMA Trial In South Africa

QUALCOMM And Ericsson Join Together To Support CDMA Trial In South Africa SAN DIEGO — MARCH 02, 2005 — QUALCOMM Incorporated, pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, and Ericsson, the world’s largest supplier of mobile systems and market leader in telecommunications, today announced they will join together to support CDMA technical trials in South Africa by demonstrating the benefits of CDMA2000® and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO wireless services while leveraging the existing GSM networks.

The technology demonstration will be conducted in Johannesburg, in an area that includes residential neighborhoods, business parks, and locations with limited wireless access. By testing the CDMA technology in a diverse range of locations, the flexibility and advantages of the technology will be highlighted. The trial will showcase how CDMA and GSM roaming can be accomplished to provide seamless voice services using a dual-mode GSM and CDMA handset.

Some operators have invested in both a GSM/GPRS and CDMA2000 1X network and serve a large number of subscribers on both networks. QUALCOMM’s GSM1x Global Gateway (GGG) solution enables such operators to offer their customers seamless coverage across both types of networks through a single mobile handset.

CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is a data-optimized evolution of CDMA2000 that provides multi-megabit peak rates and average rates of hundreds of kilobits per second at a low cost per bit, an increasingly important factor as wireless services become richer in content. Furthermore, the lower cost per bit will enable potential CDMA operators in South Africa to extend services at affordable rates to the market. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is compatible with cdmaOne™ and CDMA2000 and enables operators to obtain higher capacities and superior performance by optimizing for packet data services. In addition to the United States, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO networks have been commercially deployed in South Korea, Japan and Brazil.

“The rapidly growing African Telecommunications market is looking for complementary solutions,” said Jan Embro, vice president market unit sub-Suharan Africa for Ericsson. “We are very pleased to demonstrate with this trial how operators can take advantage of CDMA2000 technology to offer both voice and high speed data.”

“This live CDMA demonstration in South Africa will allow GSM operators to see the benefits of CDMA2000 digital wireless technology,” said Tom O’Neill, vice president of business development for QUALCOMM. “Operators will be able to preserve their current investments and GSM infrastructure, while taking advantage of the cost savings, greater subscriber capacity, spectral efficiency and superior data transmission capabilities afforded by CDMA2000 and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO.”

Representatives from the telecommunications industry in South Africa, as well as invitees from all of sub-Saharan Africa, were given an opportunity to experience the technical trials first hand during a technology demonstration at the Transtel Woodmead Network Operations Center, in Johannesburg, South Africa on March 1.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world. Ericsson is a true end-to-end solutions provider. Based on our competitive end-to-end solutions we have a strong position in the growing market for converging networks.
