Open Market Handsets (OMH)

Overview | Special Interest Group | Specifications | Testing | Meetings

Overview

The OMH initiative is a global effort being led by the CDG to enable full-featured CDMA devices that can be used in any OMH-compliant operator network. This is accomplished by moving all network and subscription provisioning from the device to the Removable User Identity Module (R-UIM) and ensuring consistent behavior between OMH-compliant devices and networks. The result is an open market that creates access to a wider variety of CDMA devices for consumers, greater economies of scale for manufacturers, and more flexibility and efficiency for CDMA operators to expand their voice and data services.

Benefits

  • Operators - Reduces device ownership costs and expands higher-tier segments, resulting in higher ARPU
  • OEMs - Allows devices to be sold across multiple operators, reduces time-to-market, and uplifts device product mix
  • Distribution - Supports complementary distribution channels and optimizes CDMA device Supply Chain Management
  • Subscribers - Makes available a greater variety of CDMA higher-tier devices and increases customer touch-points

Special Interest Group (SIG)

The OMH Special Interest Group (SIG) was formed in January of 2008 to lead the OMH initiative. The SIG provides a venue for stakeholders such as operators, device manufacturers, R-UIM vendors, and distributors to ensure that market needs are being fully addressed and facilitate commercialization and worldwide expansion of the initiative.

SIG events have met with overwhelming interest from device manufacturers, including participation from the following:

  • Axesstel
  • Haier
  • Hisense
  • HTC
  • Huawei Technologies
  • Kyocera Corporation
  • LG Electronics
  • Motorola
  • Nexian
  • Nokia
  • Rose Telecom
  • Samsung
  • SanexTel
  • Spice Limited
  • Sungil
  • TechFaith
  • UTStarcom
  • ZTE Corporation

To align with the initial launch markets for OMH, SIG events to date have been held in India and Indonesia. These events have included participation from the following operators:

  • Bakrie Telecom
  • Citycell
  • Indosat
  • Mobile-8 Telecom
  • Telkom Indonesia
  • Reliance Communications
  • Tata Teleservices
  • Virgin Mobile

As OMH achieves commercial success in these initial markets, the focus of the SIG will shift from commercialization to rapid expansion of OMH across additional CDMA markets worldwide.

Specifications

OMH specifications ensure harmonized interaction between networks, devices, and R-UIMs in order to provide consumers with full-featured OMH devices that work in any OMH network with consistent feature support and behavior. Because these specifications are interrelated, they are bundled and released as “enabler packages.”

Testing

Devices
OMH devices must be certified by the CDMA Certification Forum (CCF). CCF certification helps ensure consistent interoperability and performance of CDMA devices. For OMH devices, this certification includes test cases to ensure compliance with CDG 166 and CDG 167 specifications.

The following quick start guide provides information on certifying OMH devices through the CCF:

For more information, contact Info@GlobalCCF.org or visit www.GlobalCCF.org.

Networks
Operators must validate network support for OMH by executing CDG 173 (OMH Minimum Network Test Plan) and submitting results using CDG 174 (OMH Minimum Network Test Results). These documents are included in the OMH Enabler Package available for download under Specifications.

For more information, contact OMHinfo@cdg.org.

R-UIMs
Responding to the need for industry testing of R-UIMs, the CDMA Certification Forum (CCF) initiated a sub-working group in March 2008 to develop R-UIM certification. The CDG OMH team works closely with this sub-working group to incorporate test cases that will ensure compliance with CDG 166. R-UIM certification availability is anticipated to be in the early 2009 timeframe.

Meetings

The OMH Special Interest Group meets periodically to discuss business and technical issues associated with launching, commercializing, and expanding the OMH initiative. All interested CDMA operators and vendors are encouraged to participate.
