Media lunch and press tour ( Brazil, December 13-14, 2004)
The CDG held a media lunch in Sao Paulo with the participation of Rede Telecom, Gazeta Mercantil, Information Week, Teletime, and Folha de Sao Paulo, analysts Frost & Sullivan, Bear Stearns and IDC and representatives from VIVO, Qualcomm, Lucent, Nortel, Nokia and ZTE. The CDG gave a presentation on CDMA2000 and 3G CDMA worldwide and in Latin America, the benefits of CDMA2000 and migration to 1xEV-DO. We also discussed 3G in Brazil from a regulatory perspective. Our PR activities continued the day after in Rio de Janeiro with interviews with O Globo, O Dia and Teletime.
CITEL, PCC II meeting ( Buenos Aires, December 6-9, 2004)
The CDG s ubmitted an Information Document titled “Benefits and Deployments of CDMA Technology in the 400-500 MHz Band,” and a response to the questionnaire “Request for Information on the 410–430 MHz and 450-470 MHz Bands for Fixed and Mobile Services in the Americas.” The 400-500 MHz band was one of the main topics discussed in the meeting with many administrations supporting the use of these bands for fixed and wireless services in the region. The result was a draft recommendation on the “Use of the 410-430 MHz and 450-470 MHz Bands for Fixed and Mobile Digital Communication Services Particularly in Low Population Density Areas” to be reviewed at the PCCII meeting in Guatemala in April 2005. Another topic considered during the meeting was the identification of new spectrum for IMT-2000.
Futurecom 2004 ( Florianopolis, October 25-28, 2004)
“3G – A growing reality worldwide and in Latin America” was the title of the CDG’s presentation at Futurecom. We discussed the number of CDMA subscribers worldwide and in the region, about CDMA2000 and its growth, the future evolution of the technology, benefits for operators and end users, and services that can be offered. We also met with journalists from Tribuna da Bahia, Jornal do Brasil, Folha de Sao Paulo, Estado de Minas, Frecuencia Latinoamericana and TV Cultura. An article we wrote was published in the Futurecom News Daily on October 26 entitled, “Evolution without Barriers,” promoting the evolution to 3G following with CDMA2000.
Press activities in Brazil ( Sao Paulo, August, 9-12, 2004)
The CDG participated in interviews in Brazil with Teletime Web, World Telecom, Gazeta Mercantil, RNT and Valor Economico. We discussed the Latin American and Brazilian markets, 3G and the future of CDMA. We have developed a schedule of press releases and articles to be distributed in Brazil and are working with in-region PR representatives from our member companies to develop PR activities for Brazilian journalists during our events.
CITEL, PCC II meeting ( Orlando, July 19-22, 2004)
The CDG submitted an Information Document titled “Update on Deployments of IMT-2000 Systems Based on CDMA2000 in the Americas.” One of the main outcomes of this meeting was the approval of a questionnaire to CITEL Administrations and Sector Members requesting “Information on the 410-430 MHz and 450-470 MHz bands for fixed and mobile services in the Americas.” This information is requested for the next PCC.II meeting ( Buenos Aires, December 6-9).
CANTO 2004 (Curaçao, June 13-16, 2004)
The CDG participated in “Development/Technology Solutions” with a presentation on “Universal Access: Opportunities in the Caribbean” about the 3G CDMA2000 family of standards, deployments worldwide and in the region as well as about CDMA450 and its advantages for universal services. We also met with journalists, including an interview with Business News Americas about 3G, CDMA2000 and CDMA450.
CDG-AHCIET MoU (June 2004)
The CDG signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Asociación Hispanoamericana de Centros de Investigación y Empresas de Telecomunicaciones (AHCIET), (www.ahciet.net). Under the agreement, AHCIET and the CDG will exchange information and jointly organize conferences, seminars, meetings and roundtables on matters related to CDMA2000 and the advancement of wireless communications in Latin America. We will also collaborate on regulatory issues and develop common proposals for studies, reports and projects.
2004 CDMA Latin America Regional Conference ( Rio, May 26-28, 2004)
The CDG hosted the 2004 CDMA Latin America Regional Conference with the participation of more than 325 wireless industry members. The theme of the conference was the commercial success and future opportunities for CDMA2000 in the Caribbean and Latin America. Topics included evolving to broadband data, providing universal access, and developing and delivering innovative advanced services. In addition to plenary sessions, the conference featured a number of interactive workshops, a half-day forum on regional roaming challenges and opportunities, and an operators meeting on roaming.
3G CDMA Seminar for Regulators ( Buenos Aires, April 26, 2004)
The CDG, together with Ericsson, Lucent Technologies, Nortel Networks, and Qualcomm, hosted a seminar for officials from the Argentinean (Secom and CNC) and the Uruguayan (Ursec) governments. This seminar included a 1xEV-DO demonstration.
3G CDMA Seminar (Santiago de Chile, April 22, 2004)
With the support of the U.S. Embassy and member companies Ericsson, Lucent Technologies, Nortel Networks, Qualcomm and SmartcomPCS, the CDG held a CDMA Seminar titled “3G: Comunicaciones Avanzadas para un Chile en la Vanguardia.” The seminar was attended by more than 40 representatives of the government, universities, engineering organizations, operators and vendors. The key objective of the event was to provide information about the 3G CDMA2000 family of standard, its evolution path, advantages and presence worldwide, as well in the region, and at the same time to discuss CDMA450 and the Brazilian trials. The seminar also included a roundtable and a discussion about 450 and its contribution to the universal services policy of the government. Subtel (Chilean regulator), represented by Andrés Guzman and Claudio Pezoa, participated actively in the discussion, presenting an overview of their universal services project for rural telecommunication.
ALACEL/CTIA ( Atlanta, March 24, 2004)
CDG participated in “The Latin American Mobile Industry Recovery” Conference organized by CTIA and ALACEL in Atlanta by moderating a panel, “Carriers’ and Providers’ Visions on Industry Growth in Latin America.” Panelists included Leslie Martinkovics (Verizon), Dave Grootwassink (VeriSign) and Francisco Gomez Alamillo (AHCIET). The CDG also met with journalists from Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico and Colombia.
3G CDMA Seminar ( Buenos Aires, March 18-19, 2004)
Convergencia and Movicom BellSouth organized a seminar, “CDMA 3G – How Will Third Generation Change Our Lives,” in Buenos Aires to show the latest CDMA2000 developments. The CDG supported the event by delivering a presentation and moderating a panel. There were more than 150 attendees from operators, vendors, journalists, analysts and corporate customers. The seminar included presentations and demos about sports, TV, radio and newspapers using mobile broadband access, telemedicine, entertainment, interactive TV, the new era of the communication, mobile payment and application platforms. There was also an 1xEV-DO demo.
Presentation to the CNC ( Buenos Aires, March 10, 2004)
The CDG gave a presentation ont “CDMA2000 as the 3G Global Leader” to the Argentinean telecom regulator, CNC. There were 12 officials from the engineering, international and legal departments in attendance at the meeting.
CDG PR agency in Brazil – Gaspar & Associados (March 2004)
Due to the strategic importance of the Brazilian market for the CDMA industry, the CDG has expanded its press and public relations activities there and has engaged an in-country PR agency to assist us in coordinating these efforts. Gaspar & Associados is working with the CDG to execute a communication plan, manage communication issues in the region and to identify media opportunities to increase the visibility of CDMA in Brazil.
Telexpo 2004 ( Sao Paulo, March 2-5, 2004)
The CDG used Telexpo as an opportunity to meet with press and our members in the region. We participated on a panel, “Wireless Technology Evolution in the Mobility Revolution,” presenting the CDMA message on technology evolution, services offering and revenue increases. The panel was a good opportunity to show the superiority and future of CDMA technology. We also met with Dr. Pedro Jaime Ziller, Chairman of ANATEL, the Brazilian telecom regulator, to discuss the 3G process, universal services and 450, as well as the Brazilian mobile market.
PR activities in Argentina (Buenos Aires, February 2004)
The CDG worked with Movicom BellSouth and secured interviews with Telenexo, Telam, Bloogers, Ambito Financiero, Mercado, Noticias, Carrier & Asociados, La Nacion, Infosic, El Cronista, Infobae and Ambitop Financiero. We discussed CDMA worldwide and in the region, the advantages of CDMA2000 and provided case studies (Sprint, Verizon, KTF and SK Telecom).
Expocomm Mexico 2004 ( Mexico City, February 10-13, 2004)
The CDG attended Expocomm, where Iusacell’s 1xEV-DO demo was the sensation of the exhibition. The CDG discussed CDMA with journalists from El Universal, Latincom, Convergencia, Tele-Semana, El Heraldo de Mexico and Red. A CDG presentation was distributed to journalists and analysts who attended a cocktail reception in the Iusacell booth. We also met with Oscar Muino Kielman (Secretary of Communications) and Reynaldo Gonzalez (COFETEL) about CDMA450.

2003 CDMA Americas Congress ( Miami, December 2003)
During the Americas Congress last December, the CDG had press interviews with Tele-Semana, RTI Magazine, Frecuencia Latinoamericana, Latincom, El Cronista, Convergencia Latina, Plano Editorial, Generación Móvil, BN Americas and Infobae. We also held a Latin America Team meeting with participants from Gemplus, Lucent Technologies, Movicom BellSouth, Qualcomm, Smartcom PCS, and Sprint. We discussed the Latin America Plan for 2004 and the CALA Marketing and PR team.
CDG-CITEL Agreement (December 2003)
The CDG signed a cooperation agreement with the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL) (www.citel.oas.org). This agreement allows for the exchange of information on various aspects of wireless communications. Under the agreement, CITEL and the CDG will also coordinate seminars, meetings and roundtables on matters concerning CDMA2000, collaborate on joint projects, training, and publications, and participate in public events and educational workshops sponsored by either association. CITEL is an entity of the OAS, established by the OAS General Assembly to facilitate and promote the continuing development of telecommunications in the hemisphere.
Media Roundtable (Sao Paulo, November 13, 2003)
In November 2003,, the CDG held a media roundtable in Sao Paulo, Brazil with ten leading business and industry journalists from Brazil and the surrounding region. Participanting were journalists from IDG, Frecuencia, Gazeta Mercantil, RNT, Valor, IT Midia and World Telecom. The objective of the roundtable was to provide an update on the advancements of CDMA2000 worldwide and in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Peru – CDMA450 ( November 11, 2003)
The CDG met with the Peruvian government about CDMA450. There were 20-25 attendees from various offices of the Ministry of Communication. We discussed 450 as the best frequency to support rural telephony with voice and data services to contribute to the country’s universal services and the development of the government’s information society policy. Lucent also gave presentations on 450 from a commercial perspective and from a technical point of view. The presentations were well-received by the audience and there was Q&A about 450 deployments worldwide, technical aspects of the frequency/technology as well as benefits.
CariCam Mobile 2003 (Puerto Rico, November 3-4, 2003)
The CDG gave a presentation titled “Universal Access: New Revenue Opportunities in the Caribbean,” at the CariCam Mobile 2003 conference held in Puerto Rico in November 2003. Our message was that spread spectrum (CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO) allows universal access for all kinds of customers with any kind of service (voice and high-speed data) and opens new revenue opportunities for operators. The presentation was well-received by the audience, which also had the opportunity to see a CDMA2000 1xEV-DO demo. We also participated in a media roundtable with journalists from Puerto Rico, South America and the Caribbean countries and provided an update on the advancements of CDMA2000 worldwide, in Latin America and the Caribbean, and information about the benefits of CDMA2000 as a spread spectrum technology.
